Can we talk about this cover?! I love the normal clinch covers for historical romances but this cartoon one stole my heart, especially after reading this book!
Never Rescue a Rogue takes us back to the Merriwell family and Diana is the shining star in this book. I love how independent, headstrong and she's not a wilting flower. Toss in Giles and his load of secrets that only Diana can seem to unravel, and it creates another great love story by Virginia Heath.
So thankful to have received this book as an ARC from NetGalley!
I’m the beginning, I really enjoyed this book and was excited to read it! However, this book did not live up to my expectations. It was confusing and I felt as if I easily missed plot points because they were not addressed. I am very disappointed,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and plan on re-reading it soon. The writing and the dialogue is brilliant! This is the second book in a series, but I had no trouble in following the plot. Diana, the heroine of this book, is the sister of the heroine from the first book. Her sister married Giles' best friend.
Giles Sinclair has a problem. His father dies unexpectedly which makes Giles the new Duke of Harpenden. Giles, however, thinks that he is not the legitimate heir and fears blackmail - which happens. Diana is a journalist and is very good at rooting out things that people would rather stay buried, Giles asks her to help him discover the secrets behind his parentage and hide them, for the sake of the dukedom and the many people who depend on it. His father's brother is next in line after him, and is a drunk and a spendthrift.
I enjoyed every page of this extremely well-written and entertaining book. I received an e-ARC of this book from the publisher St. Martin's Press via NetGalley, and voluntarily read and reviewed it.
"Never Rescue a Rogue" is a heartwarming romance set in 1826 London, following the lives of journalist Diana Merriwell and the newly appointed Duke of Harpenden, Giles Sinclair, as they navigate societal expectations, scheming behavior, danger, and steamy romance while trying to keep their secrets and identities hidden. The prose is light and amusing, the characters are loyal, charming, and endearing, and the plot is an enchanting tale full of family, friendship, desire, illegitimacy, and tricky situations. The story is well-written and has an engaging mystery, strong characters, and a well-paced plot. Diana and Giles are an interesting pair, with Diana acting like a wallflower but ferreting out gossip for her newspaper column and Giles giving the persona of a carefree nobleman but being an astute businessman and very caring. Their journey to a happy ending is enjoyable, though an epilogue would have been nice to tie everything together.
I was really amused by Never Rescue a Rogue and how the relationship between these two main characters developed! Both Diana and Giles were extremely present in the plot and their banter was so entertaining to read; the part that their family members played in their relationship also created very fun situations and layers to the events in the novel. I loved the first book in this series, but this is now my favourite (at least until the next one comes out potentially). The only thing that I would have wanted was more development of Diana’s newspaper career and more moments with her and Giles’ butler, but I had a lot of fun reading it!
I really enjoyed this one more than the first book. I like the growing chemistry between Diana and Giles (Slowburn). However, I enjoyed Dalton and Vee the most in this. I liked how not only was this a historical romance but it also added a little mystery in it.
This is the second book in the series. But this could be read as a standalone.
Thank you NetGalley and Publishers for this ebook for an honest review.
3.5 stars rounded down
Giles and Diana are the pairing we all deserve. Banter and shenanigans make up the majority of this book, and I ate it up. It was light on the spice, and heavy on mystery, but I think that worked for this particular pair. Vee also had a much-needed glow-up, and for that I am most grateful. Did I feel like the ending was a little rushed? Yes, I could’ve definitely used an epilogue to put everything to rights. I also struggled with some repetitive language. But if you enjoyed the first book in this series, this is a solid follow up.
⚠️This review is spoilery⚠️
I loved this book so much. It was definitely one of my favorite reads of the year. The humor, the banter, the chemistry was all so good.
I really enjoyed the first book in this story but this one was even better because Giles and Diana had already established chemistry.
I love this author’s writing style. The only thing I love more than a rom com is a historical rom com.
Vee is a much better character in this book than she was in the first book and I’m actually really excited for her book.
Like the first book in this series, there is no 3rd act break up. I hate 3rd act breakups, so this makes me very happy.
Thank you to the publisher for the gifted copy of the ARC.
4.5⭐️
“You made me throw all my plans of blessed spinsterhood out of the window, made me yearn for an eternity stuck with a vexing, flippant, annoying rogue like you, and now you rescind the offer and try to send me away?”
Diana is a headstrong gossip columnist for the London Tribune, who secretly moonlights as the Sentinel for the paper, digging up dirt in the name of justice. Giles is a duke’s son who is charming and has a way with the ladies. When Giles’s father dies, his title and responsibilities are thrust upon him. But Giles has a big secret: he is the bastard son of the duke and has no real claim to the title, and the only other people who knows is his criminal uncle, Gervais, and his cousin, Galahad. It is up to Giles and the brilliant Diana to uncover the true heir to the dukedom.
This book was a lot of fun, and is very reminiscent of Enola Holmes. Diana is a forger’s daughter and no stranger to the evil and ugliness in the world, and is suspicious of everything and everyone. She is sarcastic and stubborn and ever the hunter of truth. Giles and Diana both try to stay on the outskirts of polite society, and naturally gravitate towards each other. This book is full of mystery and romance, and a great light read.
“I don’t want to ruin you.”
“That’s a shame, because I fully intend to ruin you, Giles.”
I think after having really enjoyed book one, my expectations were mildly high. I would say that they're very similar in pacing and banter-y romance, but my love for the MC's was not the same. One of them needed to vocalize their feelings and stop forcing them to be out-of-sight. It was a lot of will-they-won't-they.
Giles and Diana hate to love each other. They both naturally have old wounds from their past and have hardened their hearts accordingly. His best friend has married her sister and the forced proximity balanced with the forbidden love was the best over-arching theme.
I will, of course, pick up book three. The youngest Merriwell is the most delightful and I'm hopeful that it will be the best in the series.
Thank you to St Martin's Press and Netgalley for the advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
I didn't know how much I enjoyed historical romance until starting this series! Diana and Giles seem to hate each other and only tolerate each other because of their closest friends and family. Everyone thinks they belong together but they just don't think so.
Buuut they really do belong together! I love Diana playing hard to get when she wants Giles just as much as he wants her. It was nice to see Hugh, Minerva and Vee again and see where they are in their lives. I really like all of these characters and how funny and witty they all are. I can't wait to read Vee's story and see who she ends up with!
NEVER RESCUE A ROGUE is the second book in the Merriwell Sisters series, and I can’t wait for the youngest sister’s story and to be able to reunite with the sisters and their loves.
Giles and Diana have nothing in common—she’s a commoner and he’s a duke’s son— and are only thrown together since her sister is married to his best friend. They butt heads continually due to an attraction neither will acknowledge yet seem to give support and balance to each other. They both have secrets they’re keeping but confide in each other without thought. When events and actions come back to haunt them, they stand by each other and their attraction—that they continually fight—and make a fearsome duo.
It was nice reconnecting with characters we’ve met in NEVER FALL FOR YOUR FIANCEE to see what they’re up to now. The book has many different stories being tied together with a lot of twists and turns. I like the alliteration sprinkled throughout as well as learning Giles family’s history and how all the male names start with G!
There are vivid descriptions along with richly fleshed-out secondary characters. I love the playfulness and colors of the cover, though I wish the story hadn’t ended so abruptly. Still, NEVER RESCUE A ROGUE is a thoroughly enjoyable book historical romance readers will love!
I rated the book 4.5 stars but rounded to 5 stars here and on other sites.
Never Rescue a Rogue by Virginia Heath is the second book in the Merriwell Sisters series and if you haven't picked up book one yet, definitely go do that and then grab this one too.
Diana Merriwell is our FMC and Giles Sinclair is our MMC and both of them have secrets. Diana's is that she works for a newspaper exposing some pretty big information on gentlemen of the Ton. If it ever got out who writes the stories, who knows what would happen. And Giles...well his parentage is in question based on things his father shared before he died and he knows that Diana is the person who will help him figure out the truth before something happens that could impact Giles and all the people he supports.
I loved the development of these characters not only separately but together. Despite their animosity toward each other, they can't fight the attraction and as they work together, they realize there is more to their relationship than either was expecting.
If you're looking for a new historical romance with an enemies to lovers feel, definitely pick this one up!
I read the first installment of this series and absolutely loved it and knew immediately afterwards that when this one came out, I would have to read it. I was excited to read Giles and Diana's story and I was not disappointed! Giles is the friend of Diana's new brother-in-law and when those two are in the same room, there is no shortage of wit, snark, and just plain hilarious banter. The tension and chemistry between those two was plain to see and feel everytime they interacted. But neither is interested in a dalliance. Diana loves her job working at the newspaper and now that Giles has come into his inheritance he needs to focus on his duties. Both are harboring their own secrets, and Giles has a big one and will need Diana's investigative skills to help him through. They inevitably need to work close together, but will they be able to keep their mutual attraction at arm's length?
Ms. Heath pens another delightful Regency romp with fun, interesting, and well-developed characters you can't help but fall in love with and a storyline that kept me engrossed from start to finish with fun and laugh out loud moments throughout. Wonderful story and so happy to have had the opportunity to read it!
I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Periods can come across as a mix review for me if they are difficult to read. But, I instantly had no issues with the dialogue or characters. I thought this was really well done and enjoyable.
Never Rescue a Rogue is the latest release in the Merriwell Sisters series by Virginia Heath. I absolutely adored reading Diana and Giles’ story and can’t wait to read the next one. I was engaged from the very beginning and all the way to the very end. Giles and Diana were a perfectly entertaining couple. I loved that they were both such good people that they were each willing to put themselves at risk in order to protect each other and their loved ones. I also loved how well developed the author crafted each character. The author has a true gift for the written word. I highly recommend this well crafted historical romance to anyone who is looking for a good romance with a strong and independent female character.
This book was a lot of fun. The witty banter was really engaging. I have read the author before, and enjoyed this one just as much as her earlier work.
Cute, but not sure any historical rom com can hold a candle to the Bridgerton series at this point. Still 100% worth the read! Funny and adorable, the perfect combo!
So like everyone else who read Never Fall for your Fiancee I loved Giles and Diana's chemistry and I"m so happy to get to know their story. Virgina Heath did a great job of continuation of characters in this one and plot building. I loved the story and all of the little plot points that got developed. I look forward to Vee' story next!
Thank to you netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review!
I read this as an ARC from the Publisher
When Diana Merriwell’s sister Minerva married a Duke, she inherited a whole new family and moved from the daughter of a petty conman in London’s seedier areas to a wallflower among the nobility. With the new family, who she is very fond of despite their being noble, she also inherited her new brother-in-law’s best friend, Giles Sinclair. His sunny devil-may-care attitude grates on her, though he is rather amusing to verbally spar with, and not bad on the eyes if you like tall, dark and handsome. Diana does not. She doesn’t trust men in general after what she suffered at the hands of her criminal father.
Another thing Diana got with her sister’s marriage was access into the best parties and drawing rooms in the land, which she uses as fodder for a job as a newspaper gossip columnist, which is cover for her still other job, as the famed Sentinel, an investigative reporter who uncovers the deepest and darkest secrets, scandals and swindles and exposes wrongdoing. She has to keep this from her family, of course. They think she’s a lowly proofreader at the paper.
Suddenly Giles Sinclair’s father, who has never liked him, dies. And he leaves Giles with a Dukedom and a mess of problems, not the least of which is that he’s the Duke’s bastard, not his heir. Suddenly everything about Giles’ life and estate is in jeopardy and he’s being threatened with exposure by someone who claims to know the truth of his parentage. He ends up turning to Diana, who he knows is more than she appears, just by reading her writing in the paper. She agrees to help him, for the sake of their shared loved ones.
As they dig into the mystery, a great deal is revealed about them personally and many hijinks ensue. Enough to keep any reader enthralled.
Heath manages to keep an interesting mystery going as well as a romance in this, along with really fun side characters and a well-drawn world that feels both broad and real. The dialogue is witty. People who are supposed to be clever seem genuinely clever and you have great sympathy for everyone’s damage, every bit of which is earned and explained. The relationship that blossoms is built on mutual respect, friendship and solidarity, which feels right for this couple. They are attracted by one another as people before they start succumbing to the physical.
I liked it a great deal and will be seeking out more by this author.
