Dog Friendly by Victoria Schade is a cute fun romance, with adorable dogs. Morgan Pearce, our heroine, is a veterinarian, who is overworked and somewhat burned out, and when she faints on the job, she knows she needs to take a break. I was surprised to learn that many Veterinarians have a high rate of suicide, due to the stress and pressor that takes a mental toll.
Morgan loves dogs, and when one of her customers offer her a chance to spend a few months at Nantucket, while they are away, to watch over their dog, Bernadette; she accepts. Other then the people offered her the chance to get a good vacation, Morgan hides that she is a veterinarian, and claims only to babysitting the dog. Bernadette was a sweet lovable dog, which was easy for Morgan. But she is asked to foster a challenging and anxious dog, as well as help with the local rescue group's annual fundraiser. Morgan is happy and content in beautiful Nantucket, allowing herself to relax and enjoy the friends she has met, as well as both dogs she is taking care of; and now she finds herself meeting hot hunk.
Nathan Keating, our hero, has been pushing his new flavored drinks, which he hopes will escalate into a successful business; he is also very friendly with everyone in town. is the gorgeous guy who is friendly to all. He meets Morgan, and in a short time a slow build romance begins, with them spending a lot of time together, as well as him training Morgan how to surf.
What follows is a lighthearted, fun, enjoyable story, which also deals with stress, burnout & mental health. This book does give us a look at the harshness of the veterinary profession. I really liked Morgan and Nathan, and hoped they could get past some personal issues to stay together. I will say I absolutely loved the dogs, especially Bernadette and Hudson, who Morgan slowly trained her to overcome his fears.
Dog Friendly was a very good story line, with a great couple, wonderful fun dogs, and so very well written by Victoria Schade. This was a charming read, that kept me unable to put the book down. I suggest you read Dog Friendly.
DOG FRIENDLY is an extraordinary story dealing with job burnout and a refreshing romance. It stars Morgan Pearce, a pretty veterinarian who is wiped out from job fatigue. She collapses at work, so her boss insists she take time off. When her favorite client's ask her to watch their elderly dog and their Nantucket home while they are away, Morgan says yes! She is seriously depressed and stressed from dealing with bullies, raging clients and more. Hopefully, the fresh sea air and change of scenery will do her good.
However, Morgan is persuaded to foster a special needs dog. Also, a local animal rescue group is having a fundraiser, and she is talked into joining and helping out. She just wanted to relax! However, time spent with the dogs and the ladies is working its charm and she is starting to unwind.
Then, a buff surfer guy, Nathan, a health drink promoter, hits on her. Wow! Morgan is shocked and secretly pleased that a man finds her sexy. Nathan's attentions boosts her ego. Lunches with him, surf lessons and real dates, turn into a wonderful summer affair. Only are his affections the real deal?
Cute dogs, island sunshine, beautiful beaches, a handsome man, depression and more populate Ms. Schade's fantastic new book, DOG FRIENDLY. Morgan is seriously depressed from working long hours as a top veterinarian. An invitation to a sunny island is just the ticket! Morgan is magically refreshed as she walks dogs, meets a terrific guy, makes friends, and spending time away from her job does the trick.
Does Morgan come to grip with the realities of her job, realizes she needs support and make changes in her life? This is a fantastic story that handles depression and the scary aspects of a high profile veterinarian job. The author doesn't pull any punches at what can happen if not treated seriously. The atmosphere is lightened by romance, adorable animals, and good friends. An overall highly entertaining read, that I loved! DOG FRIENDLY is a barking good time!
The biggest thank you to @berkleypub for my free copy! #berkleypartner #berkleyig I just finished reading Victoria Schade's new upcoming book, Dog Friendly which was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and absolutely loved it! I have enjoyed all of her books but between the dogs and the beach setting, this was right up my alley. Veterinarian Morgan Pearce is in need of a break and takes the opportunity to dogsit for friends in Nantucket. She quickly meets all kinds of new friends including the quirky Hudson, her new foster dog and handsome Nathan, beverage and surfer extroadinare. Can this trip help her find some peace again and maybe even a happily ever after? I really enjoyed seeing the focus on compassion fatigue among veterinarians as it is not frequently talked about and how Morgan developed ways to overcome her struggles. All of the characters in the book were so lovable, especially the dogs! I especially liked little Bernadette. I am also definitely craving a trip to Nantucket now, even though I have never been! This book is the perfect summer read for dog lovers and I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next! Dog Friendly comes out June 28th so get those preorders in everyone!
At first glance I questioned my choice. DOG FRIENDLY by Victoria Schade was on my list of available books to review and I admit I love dogs. Have had three of my own, a malamute, a mutt (or as I like to refer to her as a Heinz 57 variety), and last but certainly not least a miniature schnauzer that lived to a ripe old age of seventeen plus. Amazing. Back to choice.
Well I’ve never read a book that stars animals. Sure many had supporting canines that I admittedly loved and featured in the review. But DOG FRIENDLY was a horse of a different color. Sorry for the animal reference but my mind is on a roll here.
So I cracked open DOG FRIENDLY and was immediately taken in. Morgan, a veterinarian with an amazing heart and talent with dogs is the star of the book but the dogs at times over shadow the humans.
Morgan is suffering from heartbreak. Not the humankind, the pet kind. She is at a point where the stress of being the bearer of bad new and inability to help, not only the pets but their owners is taking an emotional toll. She decides to take up on an offer to dog sit one of her senior patients. Bernadette whose human parents will be off on business trips for much of the summer. They live in Nantucket – or is it on Nantucket. Morgan will stay in their pool house, have full access to their mansion so she can make sure that Bernadette is well taken care of.
While in Nantucket Morgan is going to have to learn to slow down and decompress. And her plan is to conceal the fact that she is a vet. Her role of dog sitter seems like the perfect cover. But the interesting thing is that Morgan can’t turn her back on a pet in need. And of course there were several moments of humor since pets are fun.
While in Nantucket Morgan meets many truly interesting people and some lovely dogs. She is enjoying a friendship with Nathan, a beach kind of guy that sells juice drinks from a cart. She envies his easy pace and appreciates his companionship. If being honest with herself, Morgan also finds him very attractive on many planes. But her time on Nantucket is limited. Her goal is to get back to her job.
Morgan is amazed at just how comfortable she has become on Nantucket. The folks are relatively easy going and the close nature of the community has put her at ease. And her time with Nathan has become important. But real life is going to intrude on her blissful time on the island. At the end of her time Morgan will have to relegate Nantucket to what it was meant to be – a short respite of her life, job, and family.
So Victoria Schade is not only a very talented author with an amazing cavalry of characters for us to enjoy in DOG FRIENDLY, but she is a dog trainer. We are treated to some of the best dog/people scenes. I think that is what makes DOG FRIENDLY such a standout choice for a very enjoyable summer read. If you love pets and believe in rescues, fostering and adoption DOG FRIENDLY should be at the top of your must-read list. DOG FRIENDLY is that well written and compelling. There is a bit of a double entendre with the title DOG FRIENDLY. Victoria Schade incorporates the relationships of people with their pets with a panache. She emphasizes the importance of training and respect and forgiveness – and includes humans. Enjoy.
Let me start this off by saying Dog Friendly is not just for dog lovers. It's also for those who have or are experiencing burnout or work fatigue. The main character is a vet who is going through this and has the opportunity to take care of a dog that is one of her patients, for two months on Nantucket. This is a heartwarming story that will make you feel good, feel for the characters, all while touching upon some sensitive subjects.
This was my first book by this author, and I will be looking to read more of her works.
I love books with dogs and this one did not disappoint. The premise was unusual and kept me interested. I could barely put the story down. A really enjoyable read!
I have never read from Victoria Schade before, so I was a bit surprised when I read this book. And you already know that I read any romance books if they feature a dog on their book covers.
I have to get this off my chest. When I finished reading Dog Friendly a few weeks ago, I felt so heavy. It’s not the typical small beach town romance book. There is so much more to this story than it appears. Never knew this, but veterinarians have a higher rate of committing suicide. And that’s something Morgan is struggling with at Dog Friendly. She is experiencing blackouts and panic attacks, so she takes a break from being a veterinarian for the summer.
Dog Friendly focuses on a burned-out Veterinarian Morgan Pearce, who ruptly takes a much-needed vacation. The thing is, she is hiding who she is because she wants a break from being a veterinarian. It’s nothing to be ashamed about. I think she needs to see someone so she can get the help she needs. But that’s something Morgan needs to realize as she takes a break in the summer. You can’t force someone unless they are willing to.
Dog Friendly is more of a women's fiction genre than a romance genre read. It focuses more on Morgan's journey as she experiences difficult times as a veterinarian.
I just want to warn you that there are mentions of suicide, depression, anxiety, blackouts, and panic attacks in this book.
Morgan Pearce is a veterinarian who heads to Nantucket for a couple of months to recover from major anxiety. She will stay at the home of friends and watch their dog at the same time. As can happen she meets other dog people and then some - including the handsome Nathan. So there's some romance, some family dynamics and more than a few emotional issues.
Fans of beach reads, dogs, and a Nantucket setting will find all that and more in Victoria Schade's new novel.
3.5 stars
This is the first book that I’ve read by this author and she takes on some serious topics including depression, suicide, and stress. But she wraps them into light-hearted story that will leave you itching for a visit to Nantucket.
Our main character is overwhelmed, overworked, and in dire need of a break. A perfect opportunity falls into her lap and she finds herself in a beautiful town, making friends, and even developing a romance.
While the scenes are lighthearted, underneath there is the message of stress and burnout. How to make decisions that may impact you down the road. Connecting with other people when you have just had enough and need that mental break is a real decision somedays.
But then we break that with a building romance. I enjoyed the characters and how they started slowly, tentatively growing their feelings. However, I never got that passion and all-in feeling from Nathan. I really wanted more in the romance department from this story.
Sweet, fun, and definitely an enjoyable read. Plus, you cannot help but fall in love with the doggy stars!
This is a Romance. The characters in this book I just could not connect to. The romance in this book just was not there for me. The animals in this book took over the story, but I do not think the way they took over the story was good. I ended up DNFing this book. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
I enjoyed the summer-vacation-in-a-coastal-area aspect of this one as well as the dogs. I also gained extra awareness of what vets must live under and was, therefore, grateful to see this issue written about with sensitivity.
But I never really bought the romance between Morgan and Nathan though and never felt much connection to any of the human characters. Nor did I really much like any of the human characters.
I'm sure a lot of readers will love this one but, given my issues with it, I can't count myself among that number.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author & now I’ve added her to my list of favorite dog books authors! Absolutely loved this book - quick read, great characters and great story.
Thank you so much to Berkley for an advanced copy of Dog Friendly! I loved it.

This book so cute. A burned out veterinarian with a love for animals (that needs a rekindling), a cute surfer, and an island/vacation vibe? Sign me up. I loved Morgan. I thought she was such a fun main character, and I also think she is a really relatable main character. Anyone familiar with the veterinarian industry at all will understood the burnout and the fatigue in this career is endless...so I feel like Morgan's need to stop and breathe will resonate with a lot of readers.
I felt like this story offered a fair amount of surprises and heart touching moments, too, and I think more than animal lovers will enjoy it. Don't undervalue this one as just a beach read - it has a lot of potential to be a heartwarming story for all readers!
You see this cover and a blurb saying summer in Nantucket and you’ve a great beach read. Morgan Pearce is worn out young veterinarian. It’s all she has ever wanted to be but the mental health toll is taxing. When a favorite client offers her two months on Nantucket caring for their aging dog while they travel for work she jumps at the chance. She is claiming to be a dog sitter/walker and falls instantly into the groove of the pet friendly town. She still gets roped into fostering a dog with some issues and helping with an animal rescue's annual fundraiser.
Nathan Keating is the gorgeous guy who is friendly to all. He is promoting his new drink and testing different flavors hoping to grow his brand. Lunches, turn into surfing lessons and then real dates. He’s just the yummy summer fling that may be the real deal. The book covers a lot of heavier aspects too. I’ve never thought of the mental burnout and health issues facing veterinarians. And there’s a side story of bullying and its long term impacts too. I was just happy with all the dogs and this made me realize it has been too long since I’ve visited Cape Cod and now I want to see Nantucket. On the spice meter this is a low to medium with great kissing and one intimate scene that isn’t overly detailed.
This is a quick and easy summer romance and will bring a smile to your face. Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Good summer beach read. Dogs, Nantucket and a summer romance. Really impressed with the description of veterinarians struggling with mental health and burnout. Really enjoyed the descriptions about dog behavior and training reactive dogs.
Morgan is on Nantucket for a much needed break from a stressful veterinary practice. In many ways this is a light hearted book but it also deals with stress, mental health and family. It is an entertaining read that would be perfect for sitting under an umbrella on the beach. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
I just finished this book and it made me crave for summer already and had me thinking about actually visiting Nantucket this year! It is a fun read and I can envision readers on their lounge chairs under the beach umbrella holding this book in their hands. Don't be fooled by the beach-y vibe it brings as it also deals with "heavy" topics like mental health and rehabilitating dogs. However, the topics are not dealt with in a heavy-handed way that it brings down the tone of the book. It continues to entertain and enchant readers with the surf and sand and the fun it brings as Morgan and Nathan come together despite their own personal issues and struggles. When an incident from the past threatens their possible future together, they learn that it is best to face it rather than to bury it. It is a charming read from beginning to end.
I will have this in my beach read round-up as soon as I am done reading other books I am eyeballing for that list. A link to that will be coming later.
an interesting topic for a romance. I enjoyed Morgan and Nathans journey and her coming back to herself. Also how can you go wrong at the beach and with dogs.
A fun romantic read that is perfect for summer. Good plot, great setting. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher.
A fun sweet read that will especially appeal to dog lovers everywhere. A little romance, dog love, and some family drama. Have tissues handy.
