So that was it? So unsatisfying! Where is the shocking twist? I was scammed by the plot.
Thanks to Netgalley! Hoping for a better read next time!
Amazing crime/thriller series with each book never failing to impress. We love a book with a strong female lead!
The characters are really likeable and there is just the perfect amount of romance aspect mixed in with the mystery.
I found this to be a solid police procedural. The story was a little intense and there was a lot going on. I found it to be an overall ok read.
When a prominent surgeon and his wife are found dead in small-town Georgia, Detective Rachel Ryder and her partner Rob Bishop are first on the scene. But while the detectives have solved many tough cases in the past, they’ve never seen anything like this one.
I have never read anything by this author before but I certainly will now. This also is not the first in the series but it easily read as a standalone and everything tied together nicely. Well-plotted with interesting characters and believable dialog. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced readers copy for review.
Another solid addition to the Rachel Ryder series. Always fast paced and entertaining. I look forward to the next one.
Thank you #netgalley and #severnriverpublishing for eARC.
I read Carolyn Ridder Aspenson's mysteries but it's her first crime thriller I read. I enjoyed it and, even if it's the 4th in a series, I had no issue with plot or characters.
The plot is fast paced, twisty and gripping. The characters are interesting and fleshed, the mystery kept me guessing.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Severn River Publishing and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
I look forward to reading a thriller keeping me engaged, check.
Fantastic plot, characters so realistic you have to remind yourself don’t actually know them. The relationship between characters makes it feel even more feasible.
Good book, characters and plot. Will read more by this author in the future. Will
Recommend to others.
Get Your Shhhhiiiitttttake Mushrooms Together! 😳🤯😯😯
First things first, even though this is fourth in a series, it can totally be read as a stand alone! Next, I was completely yanked into this novel from the very first chapter. And let me tell you, it kept reeling me in with non stop shocks, revelations & suspense! I gobbled this baby up in just a few hours, putting everything on hold!
Doctor Steve and his wife, Melodie are found murdered in their home. Detective Ryder & Bishop are some of the first on scene and take the lead on the case. Very quickly things spiral from bad to worse. The woman murdered isn't actually the wife Melodie, but her twin sister, Emily. And ontop of this, the five year old son is missing. With the amped up worry of this case and missing child, it's non-stop to find out who knows what, what's happened to Melodie and most importantly, where is her son.
This ride never stopped, never paused with the constant connections unearthed and both detectives trying rapidly to piece together where the child is. Even though I had an inkling of the who, I still enjoyed the entire journey!
Thank you to NetGalley and Severn River Publishing for this ARC.
Release date: March 22, 2022
I give this 4 / 5 Bouquets! 💐
After a particularly difficult case, Rachel is back at work and facing a unique double murder. A surgeon and his wife are found dead in their home and their diabetic son is missing. With the two pronged focus of the case, solve the murders and find the boy, Rachel and the team are kept busy chasing leads and trying to untangle a web of deception and revenge. In her few free moments, Rachel is wrestling with her feelings for a DEA agent and her love for her deceased husband. The book is a great mystery. I hope the next in the series gives a bit more time to Rachel's possible romantic relationship.
I liked the banter between the characters in Countdown by Carolyn Ridder Aspenson. It was funny and seemed like how coworkers would interact and talk.
The mystery was good and kept me on my toes as to who was involved, how it all transpired, and how the main characters caught the final culprit.
This was a quick read and had me turning the pages and holding my breath at times on what would happen. The ending left me feeling a bit flat as it ended pretty quickly. However, I was confused by the epilogue and whether it was actually attached to the story or a precursor to the next book.
I would read more from this author.

Thank you NetGalley, Severn River Publishing and the author for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
First of all I will say this is the 4th book in the series which I did not realise when I requested it. While you don't 100% need to have read the other books to understand it, I feel that it would have been useful to have done so and gotten a feel for the characters and relationships. Having said that I had no issues understanding the storyline.
A prominent surgeon and his wife are found shot to death in a small Georgian town and their son is missing. It is all very tragic until the mother of the dead woman runs in and screams that the women lying dead is not the wife but in fact the twin sister of the wife. Why is this women here, who killed them and where the heck is the son...
Sounds very exciting, but I am in the minority when I say that I really had no love for anyone or anything about this book. It really got under my skin from the beginning. I actually hated Detective Rachel Ryder, I found her to be irritating, snide and full of self importance. She definitely was good at her job but basically just unlikeable all round in my opinion.
The storyline was SOOOOOO convoluted and over the top. don't get me wrong I am all for fiction and action but this was book jumped the shark in a huge way. When anyone was questioned they often began with I... I don't know or I... well I am unsure. The over use of the stuttering character really got on my nerves and it wasn't just one person it was every suspect, person of interest and sometimes just anyone who was speaking.
It was a whodunnit on steroids but not in a good way for me, this was here there and everywhere and the person who was actually the 'bad guy' well their storyline just went into overdrive. I can't say too much without giving it away but let's just say be prepared for to bend your imagination like a gymnast.
Some quote from the book that I found off were like:
"I feel bad for Mary. Knowing one twin is a lovely person and the other scum must be taxing" or "Come over here and cop a squat next to me" - that was just blah!
Or the unnecessary description of things like:
"He guzzled a sixteen-ounce bottle of water" - really he couldn't couldn't even be throwing back a Red Bull or something, this dude is literally drinking water, who cares.
And the over the top:
"I dove down and rolled behind a display of magnets as Bishop did some miraculous karate moves to attempt to know the weapon from her hands" - MIRACULOUS karate moves REALLY!!! I was just done at that point.
I liked how this one sounded and to be honest I am surprised I disliked it so much given all the 5 star reviews but that is where I landed. I hope everyone else enjoys this one more than I did.
The fourth book in the Detective Rachel Ryder series is fast-paced and the case sounds like something that would be a Lifetime movie. It involves twins, murder, a kidnapped child, crazy family dynamics, and greed. I have not read the previous books in the series, but it did not seem to matter that I had not read the previous stories. After reading this one, I do want to go back and read the other books in this series. If you enjoy crime fiction, I recommend checking out this book!
Thank you NetGalley and Severn River Publishing for allowing me to read this book ahead of publication in exchange for my honest review.
I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.
I have not read the three earlier instalments, but this stood well on its own. I found this a quick, fast-paced police procedural. I liked the main protagonist, Rachel Ryder, and the plot made sense, even if at times it seemed a bit 'out there'. There were a couple of info dumps (on diabetes and Georgia murder legislation) which could have been handled better, and the police did tend to bounce the same ideas and issues around repeatedly, but on the whole I thought this was good and am tempted to go back and read the first three books.
Well I really did like this book, it had great suspense, intrigue, action , the storyline was very interesting, it flowed nicely, and had a great who done it! But! The book just ended?! I'm assuming that there will be a second book?? it doesn't say I guess its a cliffhanger some questions are answered but there's A few things left open! So other than that the book was great! Lol thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
