Such a delightful and evocative read about nature! The illustrations are my favourite part of the book. Not only are they vivid and breathtaking, they also bring the story to life and make you feel like you are indeed in the great outdoors. For a moment, I thought cherry blossoms were really falling on my face.
This was a cute book that takes you through four seasons with Emma. I loved the descriptions of nature and how much Emma liked spending time outdoors and paying attention to the animals. I would love to read this with my daughter. Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read this.
Having enjoyed Rupert’s Snowman I was delighted to received an early readers’ copy of the latest book by the same author and illustrator.
Emma’s Sunflower is another wonderfully envisioned story of the natural world and the seasons which promise renewal and new life. The words are clear and memorable adding colour to further recount the story of the world through Emma’s window.
From which she delights in watching birds feed from her seed dispenser. She is not best pleased when a mean and selfish crow prevents others from feeding freely and she vainly tries to shoo it away.
I appreciated the sense of time changing through the calendar year despite this being just a simple short story. I loved the words that created pictures in themselves and then the illustrations which allowed the text to come alive. The angle and point of view change nearly with every page and we see leaves dancing to the ground, blossom falling like snow and birds on telegraph lines like notes in a musical score.
A book to treasure and share. A book to promote a conversation and which demands to be read again and again.
A fantastic children’s book with some gorgeous language. There is so much to discover in this book: bird names, colours, seasons, growth, life cycles. A super addition to any classroom or children’s bookshelf.
What a cute story!
This one reminded me so much of my childhood. My great grandmother would become aggravated with crows who took the food of the little birds, but without the crows the sunflowers may not have all grown.
I loved that outlook from this story and the focus on also teaching how the seeds dropped by birds sprout to become the sunflowers and how they grow.
This is something that happens in my yard every spring and I loved that little piece of my happiness being included here.
I would recommend this book to any child who loves nature and beautiful things.
Huge thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!
Such a sweet book! I love any book that encourages children to pay more attention to nature, whether that be flowers, plants, or birds. I loved that we followed the sunflower from a bird feeder, to the ground, into a gorgeous sunflower. The illustrations in this book were also very unique. I liked that the style felt a little more earthy and toned down. I would definitely purchase this for a little one or parents of a young kid!
A lovely little story about a sunflower planted by Emma. A nice tale for all ages. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.
Emma's Sunflower brings a smile to the face of all who like to feed birds and know what happens when a larger bird comes along. The arrival of a crow brings about a birthday surprise for Emma and the other birds. A sweet story with nice illustrations.
All the winter vibes and all the spring vibes!
Thank you, Purple Butterfly Press, for the advance reading copy.
