A fun, spooky read with a diverse ensemble cast! I really enjoyed the art style, and this this will be a great pick for anyone looking for an easy sapphic witchy story this spooky season.
Loved the art in this!! Absolutely stunning color palette and graphic style. The story was wonderful although felt a little rushed. I would’ve liked to seen this as a duology so that the story could unfold at a more natural pace. The witch civil war and supremacy thing felt a little odd but overall a great read.
The illustrations in this were truly excellent and I must commend the artist for bringing the authors vision to life. A rich, witchy, compelling book that i think stands out from a lot of other witchy books we've seen in recent years.
Such a fun and well written story! The premise is phenomenal and was well done! I loved the character development!
It was good, though I think I was a bit distracted while reading it. I enjoyed that it was queer, and I felt like the main character was very interesting. And, the illustrations were gorgeous!!
Coven is an adorable witchy story with wonderful illustrations. Super quick read and I found myself totally engrossed in it.
Thank you to Penguin Teen for an eARC and a physical ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Coven is the story of a witchy family that is being attacked and they need to regroup to protect everyone. Emsy is forced to move back with her parents during her summer vacation and she is not pleased. But when one of her parents is hurt, Emsy is determined to find out what happened and stop the culprit before anyone else is hurt or worse.
I sat down to read some of this one night, and before I knew it, I had finished the whole thing! When will I learn? Never! This book was so readable and the illustrations were amazing! I loved the art style and mixed with the storyline it captivated me immediately. I think this one could totally become a series and I would read more in this world. I'd love to see Emsy and her friends again!
With stunning illustrations and a compelling narrative, it immerses readers into a world where a young witch named Emsy must confront a series of supernatural murders within her coven. The story beautifully explores themes of identity, family, and the power of embracing one's true self.
I absolutely adored Coven. I sat down and read this entire novel in about an hour and a half. The illustrations were the most beautiful part of the book and each time I go back I see something I didn't see the first time around. The story was a bit confusing at the very beginning but I quickly caught on and it held my attention until the very end. This book is actually what got me interested in Graphic Novels. I had never read one before penguin was oh so kind enough to send me a copy!
Emsy spends her days surfing and hanging out with her girlfriend in California, that is, until her family drags her back to their coven in upstate New York. Some of their own have been murdered, and they are needed to find the murder and protect their own. Of course, Emsy wants only to return to her normal life, but as she makes friends, hones her elemental powers, and gets into solving the murder, the coven slowly starts to feel like home.
This one was fun. I started it a while ago then got engrossed in something else (oops), but I came back around to it last night and finished it before bed. It was a fun ride. It’s got magic, creepy elements, a mystery, queer rep, and all the other classic YA elements like growing up, changing, and finding family. It’s pretty long for a graphic novel, which is impressive both in story and in artwork. It’s a perfect winter read and out now wherever you get your comics.
i enjoyed this book, but not as much as i thought it was. I loved the art style and the premise, but something was just off for me. I will read more from both the author and illustrator, but this book did not just click for me. the sapphic romance was great though.
thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the arc.
I've read some of Jennifer's other works before and Absolutely loved them. This book is no exception I really love it. Cute story with amazing characters
The formatting for this ebook was off so I was unable to read it. From the synopsis it looks very entertaining and I will be picking it up sometime in the future if I get my paws on it.
This is a quick and fun graphic novel! I do think it would've been much better if it was a bit longer with a better ending but it was good despite that. If you are looking for a quick read with paranormal aspects and great art, this is for you.
I found this to be mostly enjoyable. The premise and the characters were entertaining, but I'm dinging it points because the ending felt rather abrupt.
For Libraries: This is a good choice for your graphic novel reading teens who like things a bit supernatural
4/5 stars, the perfect october read
Thank you Penguin Teen for the arc through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!
I must say the cover had me interested immediately, it's a stunning art piece and the art style was the same. It was one of the prettiest or at least well-drawn graphic novels I have ever read, not to mention the great little story within it. I'm glad that I got to read this in October as it was the perfect spooky read, a little bit of joy and family along with ghosts, murder, and witches.
The plot was easy to follow and for the most part really entertaining, I wish there had been a little bit more expansion on a few aspects but I understand we were seeing everything from the main character's point of view. I feel like this is going to be a sequel, but I'm not entirely sure, but the end was left pretty open. As I got further and further into the book I did guess the plot twist(s) before the end, as it was predictable, and I wish they had done something just a bit different with it. Though it felt like the ending from a bunch of old Halloween movies, and the plot gave off that vibe, so if you like that you will definitely love this book.
All of the characters had their own special aspects that I loved, but some of them got more attention than others. The main character was delightfully written, especially as she progressively tried to find more of herself and her past. There were other witches that I really enjoyed but we really only got attention on some of them. Hopefully, this book does have a sequel or something and we can see more of them.
[TW: death of loved ones and family, possession themes, burning and injury, body horror, violence, depiction of grief]
Such beautiful artistry! The ending felt a bit rushed and there is definitely room for more (as in, a sequel), but after looking forward to this book for ages I think it was worth the wait. And there could be an entire spin-off (which we need and deserve) about the cat!
LOVED LOVED LOVED the artwork and the representation. This was also the perfect graphic novel for the fall.
4.5 stars
Thank you to NetGalley and PenguinTeen for an eARC of this book! All opinions are my own.
I love the art style and storyline of this book, as well as all of the characters. I tend to zoom through graphic novels, so if characters or plot points are weak I can see them pretty easily just bc I read them so fast, but with this the characters stayed consistent and the plot was engaging! My only critique is that Emsy does complain a lot about not being in California, and then pivots pretty suddenly towards the end of book, but everything else in this book was enjoyable.
This was cute! If a little less more family drama and more magic, I would have loved it even more. Though I do want more. I mean whats not to love - sapphic witches! Yes please.
