Small town cozy and witchy new beginnings and murder mystery - of course. Quirky residents, new magic, and a bit of humor make for a light read, great for a brain-break on the weekend or vacation.
This is book 1 in the Myrtlewood Mysteries series. Rosemary and her teen daughter move to Myrtlewood when her grandmother dies and leaves her the family home much to the dismay of cousins who already reside there. When Rosemary is accused of murder the sinister forces start a train of bad magic. If Rosemary doesn't remember her past soon, it will be too late for both of them. This story introduces you to the town and all the witches who live there. I'll look for book two and hope the series grabs my attention.
This story is based off a mom and her daughter. They come back to town and the story follows a mysterious death of the girl's grandma. It is filled obviously with magic and overall this is a murder mystery story. The book is cute but it could of developed more stronger points and get to them a bit faster than anticipated. Overall it is a cute read for a young adult!
Life’s a struggle for Rosemary Thorn and her teen daughter, Athena. But their regular troubles are turned upside down after Granny Thorn’s mysterious death.
Despite her cousin's sinister manoeuvrings, Rosemary returns to Myrtlewood and the sprawling, dilapidated Thorn Manor. But there's more to the old house than meets the eye, as Rosemary and Athena soon find out — in a whirlwind of magic, adventure, mystical creatures and endless cups of tea.
Rosemary is a quirky character that will not disappoint you. I felt all the twist and turns in this book but never seen it coming. How could this be I am not floored very often and Rosemary did it will skill and grace. Can't wait to see the next book come out.
If you liked the Gilmore Girls, this is the book for you! Enjoy the family banter as Rosemary and her daughter, Athena, realize that they have inherited not only a house but magical ability and, apparently, some mortal enemies. This book, while fairly light, is clearly setting up a longer and much and more involved saga of good vs. evil.
My only quibble is that Rosemary's incompetence, compared with her daughter Athena's maturity, got old very fast. However, since this was part of the Gilmore Girls feel that the author was aiming for, I can see why it was written that way. Hopefully in future books, Rosemary will be less incapable.
Rosemary and Athena went from living a boring difficult life directly to adventure. And it got me. Love, humbleness, mistakes, adventure, learning from mistakes, motherhood; I could definitely relate to all that and find myself believing once more in my innerpower, womanhood. I can believe how much I needed to laugh out loud and relax with a nice and sweet story. Love it!
Quirky paranormal mystery set in a magical village in England. It started slow but grew as you got to know the characters. Hope there is more of this interesting village.
Accidental Magic is a thoroughly enjoyable read. It is a debut novel featuring Rosemary Thorne and her daughter Athena. They have returned to Myrtlewood following the suspicious death of her grandmother.
The book is a lighthearted tale filled with magic surrounding a murder mystery and an intriguing back story that makes me very interested in the next book.
A good start, through the character of Rosemary could use some strengthening and development compared to her daughter. I'm curious to see how the mother/daughter relationship continues as the series builds. Plenty of humor, magic and paranormal in the mix already.
A fun, easy read!
Rosemary inherits her granny’s house in the cosy town Myrtlewood where she grew up. She arrives with her daughter to settle the estate and is immediately faced with things she can’t explain.
I was hooked from the start, I loved the mother daughter relationship and the humour throughout. Overall a fantastic book, I can’t wait to read the next one in the series!
Rosalie and Aurora have been struggling. Rosalie has not told her daughter quite how bad off they are. When Rosalie's Granny dies suddenly and unexpectedly, she looks back fondly on how close they used to be, and how guilty she feels that they haven't been back to Granny's quaint town of Myrtlewood since Aurora was a small child - at least ten years have passed.
Instead of the private will-reading that they're expecting, Rosalie and Aurora have to make the drive to Myrtlewood to the law firm's other office when the office closer to them burns to the ground right before their appointment. With one strike of bad luck after another, Rosalie is afraid to get her hopes up that she'll actually have something good happen, in spite of how close she and Granny used to be.
This was a great first book to what's sure to be a fun new middle grade/YA series. Besides Rosalie and Aurora, Myrtlewood is full of quirky, fun, and magical humans and creatures that I look forward to getting to know better. I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars and look forward to reading more.
This was such an interesting, cosy book! I loved the blend of magical, paranormal, and mystery aspects. It worked well, and entertained me from start to finish. The characters were well developed, jumping off the pages and coming alive inside my head. I’m looking forward to the next book after the ending. I’m excited about what’s coming next. Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author, for a chance to read and review this book.
Unfortunately, I could not finish this book. :( I really wanted to like it. My main problems: 1) the author copied and pasted whole paragraphs of text and just move them around in the book; and 2) the author misspells her own character's name. Is it Thorn or Thorne? If the author releases an edited second edition, I will seriously consider giving it another try.
Accidental Magic is the first book in the Myrtlewood Mysteries series by Iris Beaglehole. Life’s a struggle for Rosemary Thorn and her teen daughter, Athena. But their regular troubles are turned upside down after Granny Thorn’s mysterious death. Despite her cousin's sinister maneuverings, Rosemary returns to Myrtlewood and the sprawling, dilapidated Thorn Manor. But there's more to the old house than meets the eye, as Rosemary and Athena soon find out — in a whirlwind of magic, adventure, mystical creatures and endless cups of tea. Life in Myrtlewood would be bliss if Rosemary could only clear her name in a certain murder investigation, solve the mystery and stay out of mortal peril – for at least a little while! A small town with endless secrets, strange activities and a house with a mind of its own.
Accidental Magic left me satisfied with the ending, but with plenty of questions about where the series will go from here. I thought that Rosemary and Athena had an interesting mother-daughter relationship, but I did like both characters. I thought that they balanced each other nicely and I was glad to get parts of the story from both of them. I liked the quirky nature of the town and its residents, although what do you expect from a magical town full of secrets. I am interested to see where some of the friendships and relationships might form and grow, and which might reveal even more secrets. I was a little frustrated with the number of secrets and forgotten bits of information, even though it did fit with the story. I just felt like aspect of Rosemary and magic got used a little too often. However, I was interested in the mystery and magic of the story start to finish and plan on reading the second book to see what happens next and how Athena and Rosemary grow as characters.
Accidental Magic is an intriguing start to a new series and I am looking forward to seeing where it goes.
Accidental Magic was a hard story for me to get into. The flow of the story was odd for me and I wanted to enjoy the quirkiness of it but it was hard. The premise of the story was great it just did not fall together the way I would have liked.
The plot/mystery component kept me reading.
The characters arrive in Myrtlewood to settle up granny’s estate. Upon learning that granny had been found dead under suspicious circumstances, the mystery of who is responsible pursues.
Not only do you have magic, but it seems like some residents of Myrtlewood are a little peculiar. Who is a friend and who is an enemy? Everyone is a suspect.
Although I didn’t fall in love with the characters, the author did a good job of setting up the series for future installments
A big thank you to NetGalley and Te Ra Aroha Press for the ARC, I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is the first book in a new series. For me, this was just ok. It had fun. crazy moments, but I just did not connect with Rosemary. I actually liked her daughter Athena better. It is a cute, quick read. A simple cozy mystery with magic. 3 stars
Very enjoyable read, gripped me from the start, story line gripping and I love the characters, if you love witches you will love this book
I really really wanted to love this book. The main characters just did not appeal. I had to force myself to connect with them. I had high hopes, but this was just a let down.
Quirky and charming. A nice read voor a lazy afternoon. And where can i get a magical house like Thorn Manor?
I got this arc in exchange for an honest review.
