This was sO CUTE! I am a sucker for a fun, holiday romance and this did not let me down at all. I didn't want the book to end, actually! This is perfect for fans of Alexandrea Bellefleur's books.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The small town vibes had me ready to pack my bags for Fern Falls. I loved how there were different types of hurt and heartbreak that were dealt with.
I loved pretty much all of the characters - and even the ones I didn’t love, I wasn’t supposed to, so that worked. The town had so many great people (seriously Stars Hollow like vibes with how the town and its people were just as much my favorite as Rachel or Morgan were). I see so much opportunity to get to know other characters through other stories and I hope we get that chance (and that Courtney gets the chance to write them)!
The book says it like it is. The world needs more queer holiday romances. This book delivered on that promise. For a debut author this book was exceptionally crafted with one critic:
During the initial few chapters we are introduced to a character defining moment that most authors will allude to, and continue to expand on as we go. This book on the other hand proceeded to repeat the same issue chapter after chapter. I get Christy saying no was bad but give me more each time you tell me about it, if you plan on telling me often.
I apologize if that seems ranty but it really made it difficult getting into this book. Once I was in though, I love the community of Fern Falls and the beautiful cast. It seems some threads were left open to possibly expand to a new couple, and I would definitely check it out!

I loved this book.
The chemistry and love story between the characters is everything you would want and more. I loved them all and can't wait to see the development of the other couples in the books to come.
I am so happy to have a queer book about the holidays. Personally, I am not a fan of spicy books but this one definitely became one of my favorite romcoms.
THE EPILOGUE? IS.EVERYTHING.I.HAVE.EVER.WISHED.FOR.
RACHEL REED TE AMO)
4.5 stars but rounding up, I am IN LOVE with their love story, it was a bit cheesy and felt very hallmark esque at times but that truly was what made it so charming in my opinion. Morgan’s arc was very personal to me and her discovering herself while rediscovering her love for her town was told so nicely and was done very well. I went into this book knowing almost nothing and then got invested and read it all in 2 hours and it was so nice and lovely and now I have this need to see it adapted into a movie so I can put it on during christmas time.
In the Event of Love follows Morgan Ross, a party planner trying to get her life back on track after a public scandal. She takes a job back in her small hometown, only to find it's working with her ex-best friend (and sort of but not quite ex-girlfriend), helping her save her Christmas tree farm and the entire tourist town.
This book was jampacked with Hallmark Christmas movie-type tropes, and I absolutely adored it. It was such a fun, cute read with the perfect balance of emotional moments as well. For all the sapphics that had a "situationship" with their high school best friend (let's be real, that was a lot of us), Morgan and Rachel's relationship will feel all too real, but in the best way. I devoured this book, and I'll be recommending it more especially as we get closer to the holiday season!
Morgan, rising big city event planner to the stars, is forced into a mandatory month long vaca after a client’s wandering lips end up on hers in a very public way. Better than losing her job, but not great timing with someone else is aiming to snap her expected promotion out from under her. In an attempt to salvage her career, and regain some public goodwill, she makes a deal with her boss to step away while still planning a charity event in her small childhood hometown. So - despite her best efforts to avoid returning for years - she’s back “home”, where she finds she’s been set up by an old friend - a ‘blind business date’ in a very parent trap way - into helping save the tree farm of Rachel, the girl who broke her heart.
If you ever wished the Hallmark holiday movies had more ladies in love, this one is for you. And the side characters are great too - I was super invested in the fundraiser scheme working out, and want all of them to have happiness.
What I want to know is this - why this book hasn’t been made into an *actual* movie that I can watch so many times that a) Netflix asks if I’m okay - maybe sends a welfare check - and b) it becomes a majority of my personality - at least until January.
Super vaguely to avoid spoilering - I will say that I’m conflicted on the final surprise. It’s the only thing that keeps my shy of a full 5 stars. Like…that’s a lot. I understand the reasoning behind it, I do! And maybe it’s perfect, and I’m the one with a hangup, but I just can’t stop the part of my brain saying “whoa?!”
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
In the Event of Love is a queer holiday rom-com about a LA-based event planner returning to her home town (and her first love) despite a painful past to save said first love's family tree farm. I really wanted to like this book because I love sapphic rom-coms and I definitely think we need more queer holiday stories, but this book just wasn't it for me. To start with the parts I liked: the plot-line was great! It was full of second chances and rediscovering first love that makes us feel warm and fuzzy inside. I enjoyed the side characters as well. It was fun to explore this charming town in my imagination and I love that the community came together to keep it authentic against corporate greed. Unfortunately, the thing I disliked most (and that was the ultimate downfall to this story) was our main character, Morgan. She was self-absorbed and immature throughout the majority of the story, even after she had ample time to learn from her past mistakes. Occasionally there would be times when her inner monologue gave us a glimpse of self-awareness, but it always came back to her 'me, me, me' attitude. For example, she made her father's heartbreak over a failed relationship all about her, which is understandable as a teenager, but not as a functioning adult. I liked Rachel, but the insta-love between them despite not getting to know each other again after seven years was less believable. And then they went and made the exact same mistakes all over again! The redemption was cute, but then the epilogue cutting to a proposal and immediate wedding was a giant leap in such a short amount of time. Overall, the plot kept me reading to see what happened, but I was annoyed with the MC for most of the story.
Sapphic romance, steamy moments and friendships that shine!
First let me start appreciating the beautiful cover art. The picture fits perfectly with the story.
Courtney Kae, thank you for this wonderfully written romance. Each sentence , paragraph ,flows beautifully together. It was such a pleasure reading it and with ease. I honestly can’t wait to read the next in the series, the one after that and then the one after that. You illuminated so many characters in the book , that I can’t wait to hear their stories.
For some people I understand sapphic romances might not be their go to books. However, I recommend reading this book so you see just how lovely Kae writes.
This book was what I needed. I lovely romance with not to much drama. This is a book for all year round and for me I will put it as a Christmas book.
In ‘In The Event Of Love’, we have Morgan an event planner and Rachael the lubber. We learn very early these once best friends kiss and it all goes wrong. The book starts several years later where we have these two mature young women who need to come together to save a small town. The past still leaves a soar taste in their mouths, can they break past it for the sake of more?
I really loved the building of this story and the history. Not just the history of the women but also the stories from times gone by.
Every person you will meet in Fern Falls is unique and brings something different to this small community. You can’t help fall in love and dream about visiting a Fern Falls yourself.
I’m sorry if my review doesn’t give yo much away but I feel that would spoil the characters you meet and what you learn along the way. I hope you all enjoy this book as much as I did.
Thank you once again Courtney, I’ll look forward to what’s next.
Thanks to NetGalley for this arc for and honest review
This is the perfect Hallmark, cozy feelings, trope-filled story. It brings together two unlikely characters in a very STEAMY way. I enjoyed its predictability but I wish they had dug into the nitty gritty bits a little more. It almost felt very fairy tale and Hallmark.
A cute story that gives you exactly what you're looking for in this type of book.
3.5/5 stars for me.
This was the perfect cozy, swoony romance read. So many beloved tropes were present but with fun unique twists, making a beautiful sapphic love story that felt both comforting and fresh. The chemistry between characters was clear on the page and kept me reading, unable to put the book down. The small-town setting was so immersive that reading this book really felt like going on a little holiday of my own — the perfect escapist read that you makes you happier and lighter by the time you put it down.
Courtney Kae took all of our favorite things about Hallmark holiday movies and made it bisexual and I love that. We have a big city businesswoman going back to her small hometown in the mountains, a second chance romance, a group of townspeople coming together to protect their businesses and way of life from the evil corporation, wintry beverages. This book has it all!
I'll admit, this book had a bit of a slow start for me. Maybe I just wasn't in the holiday spirit yet, haha! (I started reading this book in July and really read most of it in the first few days of August.) I don't think I fully connected with the main character and her issues at the beginning, but once the story shifted away from LA and to the fictional town of Fern Falls, it really started coming together for me.
I think my absolute favorite part was the end! I love the way everything was resolved in the most Christmas-y romance-y way and then the Epilogue was the cherry on top. Such a delightful world Courtney Kae has created and I'm so glad she'll get to tell the stories of the rest of the Fern Falls gang!
Thanks to Kensington and NetGalley for the ARC!
What a deliciously cozy, heartwarming, and touching book. This book is a dream come true for me. Sapphic + Hallmark + a touch of spice = so good. I was hesitant about an event planner (Morgan) going back home where she reconnects with her first love (Rachel). But the author nailed it. I would die in happiness if this was made into an actual move. It’s so damn cozy and sweet—it’d be a perfect holiday movie. This book had the perfect amount of angst, grand gestures, family and community, and the love story between Rachel and Morgan? Gah, perfection. This book was like a warm hug. Tender and sweet and oh, so cute. I loved the message that Morgan struggled with throughout the book and her realization of her being enough all along. I can’t recommend this book enough! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for letting me read the eARC copy of this lighthearted sapphic romance!
Morgan Ross is an over-worked and stressed-out event planner. One night, as she’s preparing for one of her biggest events, her life gets turned upside down.
She flees LA and decides to go back to the town she escaped from when she was younger: Fern Falls.
As she struggles to get her life back on track, an old flame is rekindled and she falls for her high school friend, Rachel Reed, once again.
What I liked about this book:
- sapphic romance, finally some cute representation of a wlw couple!
- hallmark-movie-like setting with a lot of Christmas vibes!
- noticeable character development
- spicy scenes
What I didn’t like:
- The romance felt a bit rushed. Morgan and Rachel hadn’t seen each other for years and yet they fell in love in a very short period of time.
- The drama. This book contains alcohol abuse and a parent’s death, but these two heavy topics are barely talked about. They are used to further the plot for a few pages and I have to admit I would have liked it more if I didn’t have to read through those scenes. They were supposed to add tension and other emotions, but I personally felt a bit… bored?
Overall, this book was a nice getaway from the heavy high-fantasy worldbuilding I was reading.
I’d say that if you enjoy reading a cute sapphic love story, then this is definitely the book for you!
This feel good romance had me wanting nothing more than this to be made into a queer focused Hallmark Christmas movie - because if we are being honest, we could use some more of those.
Cringey at parts, overall this was a feel good, small town, second chance romance. The characters were lovable and made you want to be apart of the community of Fern Falls.

This is the perfect lgbtq version of a hallmark Christmas movie. It even has the city girl stranded in an adorable small town in need of saving.
Morgan and Rachel were best friends growing up before feelings started developing for both near graduation, until a falling out that had Morgan run to LA.
After an LA scandal has Morgan retreat home, she is determined to help throw a fundraiser to save Rachel’s small town tree farm from the big, bad corporation.
This book was everything you want out of a Christmas movie and I had so much fun reading it. It had light and fun moments as well as a deep character dive into self love and self acceptance.
Add a fun group of friends and you have a holiday treat, just add hot cocoa.
I provided 1 link to a post teasing the book cover and will post a more in depth review closer to PubDay.
Really fun queer holiday rom com. A nice light read and will get you wishing it was winter!

This book was a fun, queer, holiday rom-com that’ll match perfectly with a hot mug of tea or hot chocolate! Courtney Kae’s writing quickly envelopes you in a progressive small town full of festive cheer and heart that’s straight out of a Hallmark movie. Like many of those movies, some plot points felt a little rushed and predictable, but the atmosphere created and how loveable the Fern Falls crew is makes up for it.
Definitely a great lighthearted, sapphic, holiday romance for anyone looking to escape into a winter wonderland filled with coffee, events, and lumberjanes!
In. Love.
This book was absolutely all my favorite things about feel-good holiday romances rolled into one.
I ADORED Morgan and Rachel’s romance. They were so so sweet together, and I couldn’t get enough of the love scenes. The little stories from their past completely endeared me to them, and I loved how Rachel kept Morgan’s memory alive even after she left town.
If you love sweet holiday romances, saving the small town, and steamy f/f love stories, you absolutely need to read this book! I cannot wait to read what Courtney Kae writes next. This was the best debut I’ve read this year! Definitely a must-read this holiday season.
4 stars
Courtney Kae is turning classic Hallmark tropes on their head in this debut novel that puts queer love in holiday romance centerstage. In the Event of Love has everything that you would see in a Hallmark movie: a quaint town, a evil corporation, a cast of fun characters, and a love story that brings two people (and a community) together in the end. What this book has that Hallmark typically doesn't show is a love story between two women and some excellent, excellent smut.
I thoroughly enjoyed delving into the world of Fern Falls and seeing our two leads Morgan and Rachel find their way back to each other with a little help from the magic of Christmas. The inner conflict preventing them from getting together does get a bit repetitive at the beginning of the story, but things do certainly start to pick up when we get to the 50% mark and Kae does a wonderful job of avoiding some of the more irritating third-act conflicts that Hallmark movies typically utilize.
I love the world that Kae has created and I sincerely hope that we get more books in lovely Fern Falls in the future.
