What a great resource to accompany Queenie - includes author interview, book club discussion points, bookmark, additional book recommendations, and food recipes. You don't need to be in a book club to enjoy.
This is just the perfect kit for a successful book club meeting. I loved the bookmarks and the recipes especially. My book club hasn't met since pre-COVID-19 and I would love to revive it. I've already read Queenie and I had mixed feelings about it but I would re-read with my friends and would love to have a discussion. I am Jamaican based in Jamaica so I might buy bun and cheese rather than bake a bun from scratch but I will be saving the recipe.
Good kit, got the group talking, and the discussion guide really made people think about how they had read the book. The bookmarks were a nice touch and the recipes really helped people connect with the characters and they loved being able to cook with them!
This book club kit was well thought out and put together. It not only included thoughtful questions, but also a quiz, activities, bookmarks, a recipe, and a themed drink to make the book club meeting a full fledged event! I appreciated that it included information on the author, other books by her/the publisher, and suggestions for books to read if you enjoyed this one. This would be a great kit for someone wanting to spice up a book club meeting.
While I was not a huge fan of the book Queenie itself I thought this book club kit actually provided a new perspective on the novel for me. I would use this to discuss with friends!
This is a REVIEW ONLY of The BOOK CLUB KIT for “Queenie,” a novel by Candace Carty-Williams about a pretty black female journalist living in London trying to figure out her love-life and career in this Bridget Jones-style comedy-drama. This fabulously created colorful 19-page e-book is with loaded with everything to make your Book Club meeting memorable. Featuring lots of discussion questions to stimulate insightful two-way conversations among reading groups, it’s also full of visual appeal because of the bright art and bold, eye-catching graphics. The Q & As are excellent and will be useful for Book Club Leaders, Librarians, as well as readers themselves who want extra insight into the background of the book and author. 💕 As all compelling Book Kits do by adding additional graphics and fun elements, this one truly rocks! It offers suggested food and drink recipes; musical playlists; bookmarks to cut out; an author interview; additional suggested readings, and so much more. This is a truly exciting Book Kit worthy of it’s designation. 💕
TheBookMaven graciously thanks NetGalley, Author Candace Carty-Williams, and Publisher We Are Bookish for this Advanced Reader’s Copy (ARC) for review.
After finishing this short-but-sweet kit I feel it added to the reading experience and provided lots of topics for discussion among readers.
The author's interview is really great. Candice Carty-Williams came across as down to earth and relatable in her answers and I loved the insight into her writing process.
I think real life support resources are always appreciated. We can never assume someone isn’t experiencing some difficulty whether it’s in themself or at the hands of another so support lines are a great add.
The other elements in the book club kit, such as the challenges and quizes, further book recommendations from Candice herself and other authors and the food and drink recipes would be perfect for an in-person book club.
The only thing that may not be successful is presuming people are attending in-person book clubs when in reality, social media and virtual book clubs are more popular and prevalent in the book community, especially since Covid-19. The digital space among readers has exploded so I think targeting the online community is very beneficial.
Great book club questions! This is a must if you are reading this book and love discussion questions. I love that there were book recommendations in this as well.
I’ve had this book on my Kindle bookshelf for over a year. One of the book clubs I love @blackgirl_bookclub posted this last year as one of the reads for the month. I bought it but never got to attend the discussion. After reading it I hate I didn’t. This was the first book I actually listened to the audiobook and read the book at the same time. I went into this book thinking it was like Bridget Jones Diary thanks to some comparisons and reviews I had previously read. Let me tell you right away it is nothing like Bridget Jones Diary, its darker. Trigger Warnings: miscarriage, sexual assault, domestic abuse, racism, police brutality, cheating, slut shaming, ptsd, panic attacks, night terrors, child abuse, suicide This book is the life story of Queenie a Jamaican English woman’s in mid-twenties. It’s her journey of self-discovery. Queenie is a phenomenal character because her journey feels so real and authentic. Candice Carty-Williams writes Queenie’s character with empathy and understanding. Her emotional baggage is something many of us can relate to a one point in our lives. I found myself getting so frustrated in the beginning of the book with Queenies decisions. I found myself screaming THERAPY for majority of the beginning of this book. Then I remembered in the black community how taboo the subject of mental health can be and her family was no different. My favorite part of this story was how her family came together despite old traditions and thinking for her well-being. Why this book doesn’t get a full five star rating : RACE: I wasn’t sure what was the point trying to being made here. Important subjects were approached vaguely, and mixed with other issues like gentrification, sexual objectification of black women, systemic racism and micro-aggressions. This was my first read by this author. READ it if you haven’t! Thank you to @netgalley for the ARC and Jefferson parish public library for the audio book. Happy Reading!
I love these Book Club Kits! This one is awesome including so many great questions to use in your book club discussions. It made our book club meeting so much more interesting!!
Excellent tool for your book club needs, could do with some more questions
Thanks NetGalley for this!
I love these book club kits. I especially loved the author interview in this one, which gave a bit of insight into Queenie's character. Great discussion questions and the quiz to find out which Corgi you are is so fun!
Queenie is a great book, and this is a great companion for book club discussions.
:)
Another book club kit from We Are Bookish—and gosh, I could have used this when I read "Queenie," because I had Questions and Feelings and could have used a better way to structure them. Like the other book club kit I've downloaded (for Sally Rooney's "Beautiful World, Where Are You," the sections here include an interview, discussion questions, a bookmark, further reading suggestions, and more.
I appreciated that the reading suggestions here come with a bit more context—not just "if you enjoyed the book, read Y," but "if you enjoyed X about the book, read Y; if you enjoyed Q about the book, read R," and so on. It felt more tailored, more likely to lead to a read that I'd enjoy. As much as I enjoyed the author interview, though, I think I'd have preferred an editor interview or similar—perhaps I'm spoiled from the "Beautiful World" book club kit, but an author interview feels like something I'm much more easily able to find elsewhere.
In addition to use for literal book clubs, these kits could make for handy jumping-off points for students working on essays (cite your work, folks)...and, of course, food for thought for those of us who will never cook the kits' suggested recipes but like to overthink.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a free copy of this book club kit.
5/5
One of the best book kits out there! I will be meeting with my book club about this book and it has everything I need. It includes a playlist, recipes, quiz and so much more. There really isn't anything that I wish it had.
An amazing little resource for your local bookclub. Thought provoking questions and great ideas for starting discussion.
A helpful and informative kit, I loved the interview section and the later extras such as the recipes and author recs! The questions themselves were varied and thought-provoking... An easy to follow guide for even a novice book club.
This is a great book club kit! I genuinely enjoyed all the sections. The author interview was interesting, the discussion guide has excellent questions, I very much want to make the Jamaican Easter Spice Bun recipe, I loved the "Which 'Corgi' are You?" quiz (I got actually corgi, haha). My favorite section was the "Love This, Read That: What to Read Next" section - I appreciated that there was text explaining why you might like the recommended book based on what you liked about Queenie.
I read (and loved!) Queen a couple of years ago - the protagonist was a relatable, flawed millennial, and I thought the author's approach to heavier themes like mental health was very well done. I've been meaning to suggest this book to my Book Club for a group read, and these thoughtful questions and other Reader's Guide resources would be so helpful in guiding our discussion.
This little kit is the perfect companion for book clubs reading queenie. Great tips for starting discussions and cool bookmark
This is my first book club kit, and I was excited to see the potential enrichment that this kit could provide to the shared and personal reading experience! This was a great first exposure to book club kits, and I look forward to utilizing these in the future!
