The latest in the Rivers of London series has Peter trying to wrap up a case before Beverly gives birth to their kids. Peter is working on a murder case that has the victims with their hearts carved out and also training more of the London police force to recognize when magic has been used. As he is working on the case there are links to the Smiths of Weyland that get brought up and some bit of WW2 war magic as well. This is one series that the comics help expand stuff going on in the books and things get mentioned from them without making the reader wonder what they missed but they do expand on the universe. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.

DC Peter Grant is back on the case and he's also waiting for the birth of his twins. Things are quite stressful in his personal life and his new case is not giving him much breathing room either. Between the murders and with possible sightings of an angel Peter's got a full plate. Peter's got to get a move on because time (an babies) waits for no one and both he and the victims may be running out of time.
Peter Grant has his hands full in the ninth Rivers of London novel, what with a full-fledged angel of death stalking the holders of seven silver(ish) rings, his old pal Leslie popping in to make trouble from time to time, and his wife Beverly, a minor river goddess herself, about to make him the father of twins. As usual, it’s a fun romp around London, while adding points north, and underneath the magical elements, it’s a solid police procedural.

Soon-to-be-father, constable, and wizard Peter Grant takes on an angel in this one...or is it an alien? If that sentence doesn't convince you Amongst Our Weapons is worth the read, please read this review to change your mind. This installment has all the bells and whistles I've come to love in the Rivers of London series; witty banter, spell-flinging, talking foxes, and of course Peter's Feelings (with a capital F) about London architecture. A great story with a satisfying conclusion makes Amongst Our Weapons an excellent addition to this intrepid series!
I have t read any of the other books in the series so it was a bit hard to jump into this one. I had to look up a few of the characters at the Follypedia Wiki to try and catch up. Overall, it was an enjoyable book and I might have to go back and catch up with the series.
Another solid outing in this long running series that does a great job of blending Urban Fantasy with Police Procedurals!
Peter is desperate to get back to his girlfriend before she pops out their twins. Seeing as how she is a river goddess, he is London's second best wizard cop, and someone just committed murder by magically carving out a man's heart, no part of this week is going to go easily. By this point, Peter is equally deft when wielding magic and police bureaucracy, so a mystery that spans centuries and crosses international borders gets wrapped up with hardly any destruction of property at all, by his standards. Peter has really matured as a character, which is not to say he's stopped quipping or throwing out pop culture references.
I have been wanting to try this series for a while, but since I was so far behind, I wasn’t sure. I went ahead and requested this book even without reading previous ones. Yes, I could tell there were things I didn’t understand, but I know this would have been hard to put in the ninth book to bring everyone up do speed. I was still pretty engaged in this book anyway. This author’s writing is very clever, and I loved the little clever sayings and inferences to movies and the like, and I’m sure there are a few inferences I missed. I did also find this a tad wordy, but that’s probably because I’m not much for history, and this did have quite a bit of history. The characters were so fun, the plot interesting, and the overall universe is intriguing. I really liked this book, and I will definitely read more going forward. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
This is the first Rivers of London book I’ve read even though it is the ninth book in the series. Unfortunately it didn’t grab me at all. The writing seemed stilted, I didn’t find any of the characters engaging, and the story unfolded too slowly for me. Not recommended
Thanks to Net Galley and Penguin Random House for an advanced reader copy.
I wasn't aware a new Rivers of London book was ready to be released so this was a pleasant surprise. Interesting story concerning Peter investigating the mysterious deaths of seemingly random individuals along with a possible celestial connection all while trying to prepare for the imminent birth of twins. Easy enjoyable read with a surprise thrown in that will make things interesting down the road. Can't wait for the next installment!
I adore the Rivers of London series. I've been eagerly awaiting this one and wasn't disappointed. The only drawback was too much info dump at times...but it was a professor monologuing and other characters were also finding it a bit tedious. This is probably not the best one to start with in the series, but new readers can jump in without too much confusion.
I liked seeing Peter, Nightingale, and the gang, but the plot this time around didn’t really grab me. It felt like there was more exposition than usual, and I found myself wishing I had waited for the audiobook and the dulcet tones of Kobna Holbrook-Smith. I’m a little weary of Leslie’s appearances at this stage too.
Not to be missed, of course, but it wasn’t my favorite of the series.
My thanks to NetGalley for making an eARC of this book available to me.
Yet another satisfying "Rivers of London" book. It's always nice to to see a bit of Peter's home life, and this book doesn't disappoint in that regard. We also get a little bit more background on the British magician organizations (now mostly defunct) of the early 20th century. There are a few loose ends in this book that could easily form the basis for further books in this series, giving us hope that there will indeed be more books forthcoming.
Ben Aaronovitch has done it again! He sucked me into a very strange London where Peter Grant, Nightingale, and the Folly crew need to stop a killer before she kills again! The problems just mount up as a death in the London Silver Vault leads to a torture victim in an apartment and then attacks on others. There is also the issue of Lesley's warning and appearances and the fact that Peter needs to wrap up this case very soon since Beverly is about to give birth to twins and he needs to be present, or else! So a very fun addition to the Rivers of London series that brings Peter new headaches and joys.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this tale!
