Good book! This book had suspense, intrigue, action and a great detective work! The storyline was very interesting and flowed nicely! I definitely enjoyed reading this book! I will recommend reading this one! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
Another great book by Robert Crais. What's not to love about Elvis Cole and Joe Pike, well throw in a little Jon Stone! Oh, and add Lucy Chenier and Ben! The story is about a podcaster with eccentric parents who gets in over his head with LA politicians. The podcaster goes missing and his mother hires Elvis to find him. A fun page-turner that I enjoyed tremendously.
I was thrilled to get an advanced reader copy from NetGalley and loved catching up with Elvis and Pike with this fast paced missing person case with full on twists and turns and suspense. Highly recommend for both new and old fans of the series.
Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are back and full of adventures. This was a fabulous read and I read it in a sitting. I couldn't put it down because I had to know what was going on and I couldn't wait. Robert Crais draws you in and has you falling deep down the rabbit hole with his characters. I really like the character Jared even though he wasn't a main character I really think he played an important part in the book. I think it was wonderful that a suprise couple of characters made a reappearance and I can't wait to see where the next story takes us with them. I highly recommend this to anyone as a stand alone or as part of the continuing series.
I can't get enough of Cole and Pike. Racing the Light is another fantastic installment in this series. On November 1st, 2022 make sure you purchase and read this exciting novel by Robert Crais. Thank you to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for this advanced copy.
My thanks to G.P. Putnam's Sons, as well as to NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of Racing the Light.
I have loved private investigator Elvis Cole and his enigmatic partner Joe Pike for so many years! Racing the Light is filled with quite the cast of quirky characters! Possibly a few too many...
This time around Elvis is hired by an eccentric older woman who is trying to locate her missing son, and Elvis is pulled in every way imaginable as he follows clues. (It's too bad his Felix the Cat clock doesn't help him out once in a while!) I was thrilled to see Lucy and Ben again but I wish Joe had played a larger part in this book.
As usual, this Elvis/Joe book is filled with heart, humor, and suspense. I think I would have appreciated it even more if the plot had been a wee bit less convoluted. Having said that, however, I can't wait to read the next book (or books) in the series!!!
Another Crais book, with the plot revolving around a missing persons case. Elvis Cole is hired by a distraught and mysterious woman to find the son she believes has been kidnapped. As it turns out, Elvis is thrown into a swirl of events and people. Lots of red herrings. Too many names for me since I hate crowded books. I felt the intricacies didn’t push the plot forward.
The best thing is that Crais allows this novel to be read as a stand-alone. He sufficiently gives tge backstories of important characters so a new reader isn’t lost.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC.
Lucy and Ben are back! A terrific read. Some of his best writing happens when Lucy is around. Mix in Pike and Stone, politicians on the take (shocking, I know), a pornstar, a crotchety old neighbor and some Chinese hit men and you’ve got a great story.
Elvis Cole is back with a not so average missing person case and a variety of interesting characters. The plot is fast moving, current with the theme of corruption, podcasts and drones. Fans of the detective duo will appreciate the return of Lucy and Ben. I do wish Pike appeared more in the book as I enjoy both characters and love the interaction between Pike and Cole. Fans of this popular series will not be disappointed. New readers to the series will find themselves wanting to go back to read earlier books. Fun read.
I am a huge fan of the Elvis Cole & Joe Pike series and it has been FOREVER since the last installment, so I was thrilled to receive an ARC of the 19th entry in the series, "A Dangerous Man". It did not disappoint! I won't summarize the plot since it is in the description, but as usual it is a testosterone-filled romp of a mystery investigation. And I was happy to see Lucy and Ben return.
Another great one with Elvis & Like. Lots of misinformation, lies, friendship, and silly turn deadly with Shue
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc
The characters in this, favorites Joe and Elvis, plus the ones only in this series, are well-written.. The plot is good. A somewhat overbearing mother is trying to ind her son, a podcaster that sees himself as an investigative journalist. The son is mixed up with a porn star/escort. When she turns up dead, hopes of the son being alive diminish.
This was good, but I had trouble staying focused. I read an e-copy and found myself checking my mail the Target ad, etc. way too much. I finished it a few nights ago and honestly don't remember much about it other than who the bad guy (or girl - no spoilers here) was.
So, this was good for me, a big Crais fan, but did not really stand out from so many on the shelves.
So happy for another Elvis Cole! His 'old school' pound the pavement approach...he always finds his person! Of course, Joe Pike makes a strong contribution but was delighted to see Lucy and Ben back in this book! Loved the relevancy of a podcast story. This one brought a few tears to my eyes (and Elvis's). Keep them coming Robert Crais, we love this series.
This novel was a delight to read. I have been awaiting a new Crais novel for the past few years and this novel did not disappoint. The wit and wisdom of Cole and Pike shines through the novel and will be well received by Crais' legion of fans.
Private investigator Elvis Cole, the “world’s greatest detective” is back in the saddle battling corrupt politicians, killers, and Area 51 loonies in RACING THE LIGHT, the nineteenth entry in this every engaging series
.
Adele Schumacher walks into his office with her two “helpers” and hires Elvis to find her missing son Josh. Josh is a podcaster, and he has been given some inside documents that threaten to topple a lucrative illegal real estate scheme. It was the now murdered adult film start who provided Josh with the dirt, and he goes on the run in an effort to avoid the same fate while trying to get his story told.
Juggling the many facets of the case, Elvis calls on Joe Pike to help him take down the bad guys. I always enjoy Robert Crais’s “Elvis” books, and this is no exception. I will say, though, that I am always looking for a little more Joe Pike. The man behind the glasses and the tats seems intriguing enough to warrant a larger role.
I always love a new Elvis Cole! I coulda used a little more Pike but he made his presence known. And Lucy!
Elvis is in his office debating with his Mickey Mouse clock whether he should take lunch so early when an elderly woman with 2 bodyguards show up in his office asking him to look for her son. Adele, the mother is not your typical mother which we find out as we read.
Her son who has a podcast with his best friend is missing. Elvis takes the case and proceeds to Josh's (her son) home. What could he have been working on that would make him disappear? He's not the only one wondering. He gets clues, as he does, and follows them. He assists the help of Joe Pike and one of Pikes former associates. Help he'll badly need.
A wonderful group of characters...the porn star, the noisy neighbor, the best friend. Robert Crais at his finest, I loved it.
Adele Schumacher isn't a typical worried mom. When she hires Elvis Cole to find her missing son, a controversial podcaster named Josh Shoe, she brings a bag filled with cash, bizarre tales of government conspiracies, and a squad of professional bodyguards. Finding Josh should be simple, but Elvis quickly learns he isn't alone in the hunt--a deadly team of mysterious strangers are determined to find Josh and his adult film star girlfriend first.
With all the humor and fast-moving suspense that Crais fans desire, Racing the Light reunites, Cole, Joe Pike, and Jon Stone. Crais gives his readers a lovely surprise when Lucy Chenier and her son Ben arrive for a visit, but we're left wondering if they'll be back to create the family that Elvis desperately wants and needs. #RacingTheLight #NetGalley #SaltMarshAuthors
The Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series by Robert Crais is an automatic read for me. Racing the Light is the 19th installment of the series and brings the usual wit and drama with a bit of sentiment and Joe Pike thrown in. Elvis is hired by an intriguing albeit quirky mother, Adele, to find her missing son Josh. Josh is known for his own quirkiness as a controversial podcaster with a very limited audience. As Elvis quickly discovers, he's not the only one looking for Josh, and it seems the amateur podcaster may have stumbled upon something a little more sinister than the UFO conspiracies he usually investigates.
This book is typical Elvis, fun and a quick read. While you wouldn't be lost if you read this as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the series from the beginning. Someone from Elvis's past makes a welcome appearance.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for an advanced copy for my review.
Whgn I received the ARC from #netgalley for the newest Elvis Cole book by Robert Crais, I was really excited. I love this series, and I love Elvis and his partner.
I don't feel a need to summarize this book in my review. It is standard Elvis Cole fare... And if you read the books, you know what I am talking about. If you are not familiar with the series, start at the beginning - the early books are the authors best work.
This was the usual Elvis Cole book, but it somehow fell flat. It was good, but not amazing, or engrossing. It was almost as if it was a Coke that had been open for too long and went a little flat. It was still tasty, but not what I was really craving.
If this were a new series by a whole new author, maybe I would have loved it more - but knowing what this series is capable of, this just didn't do it for me. I truly enjoyed re-visiting with the characters, especially Pike. A good, solid book, but it was missing a "wow"
3.5 rounded up to 4 stars because I do love these characters.
I've been a fan of Robert Crais' Elvis Cole novels for decades, although it's been a while since I read one, but I was expecting to enjoy RACING THE LIGHT. Sadly, I didn't. I couldn't even finish it.
Oh, it was workmanlike in its construction and the prose was solid and professional, but somehow the whole book seemed terribly slight, even a touch puerile. The narrative felt more like a parody of the books I used to enjoy rather than a new version of one.
Maybe it's just me. Maybe I've changed since I started reading Elvis Cole novels years ago, or maybe the world has changed, but RACING THE LIGHT was more like an artifact from a lost age than a contemporary PI novel. I wish I could have loved it. I just didn't. I fear the kind of novel Crais is writing is hopelessly out of style. I'm not sure if that's his loss, or ours.
