I really enjoyed this read, it was gripping, twisty and unpredictable. The characters were well developed and the stroyline was well written. A great read.
The Perfect Suitor by Cole Baxter is my first read from this author, and if it is indicative of his previous work, I can certainly understand why his writing has such mass appeal.
Charlene continues to grieve the loss of her beloved husband three years after a shocking attack on the street leaves him dying in her arms. Certain that she has had the love of a lifetime, her heart is closed off to any further romantic possibilities. Enter Samuel, the handsome Brit who will charm Charlene into letting down her guard and opening herself up to love. But the handsome suitor is not, it appears, as genuine as he would have her believe, and Charlene soon finds herself doubting the motives of the man with whom she has, against all odds, fallen in love.
This is a twisty ride that will leave you wondering about the potentially dark consequences of a hopeful leap of faith.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for an ARC.
Charlene is grieving the death of her husband. She hasn’t left the house in years, attends online therapy sessions, and is extremely depressed.
But she gets a friend request from a man named Samuel. They hit it off, but she’s suspicious of him early on. She doesn’t know if she’s worrying too much to push him away or if there are actual concerns where Samuel is involved.
This book was a slower pace than I normally go for. It was definitely a slow burn. Charlene started out as very broken but she discovered her strength as the book continued on.
Nothing in the story was absolutely shocking. I expected the “twist”. But it had a good ending where you’re really hopeful for Charlene in the future.
I really enjoyed this book, I would give it more than five stars if I could. I’ve always loved this authors books, and this is probably my favourite.
I really enjoyed The Perfect Suitor, it felt lighter than the thriller/mysteries I had read of late, which was a nice change. It makes me want to read more of Cole Baxter's books.
The story of Charlene was tinged with sadness, obviously, with the passing of her husband and the guilt she carried. I liked her story of being a recluse, hermitting herself as a way of having control over her life. I found it relatable, as I'm sure if my hubby was to be murdered in front of me, I'd struggle with the outside world too!
What was great about the character was her development, from this meek sad woman to someone strong and resourceful.
I also was a big fan of the ending. Again, a nice change from a lot of the suspense/mysteries I have read, in this one, Charlene had a happy ending - but it didn't at all feel cheesy.
I give the book 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4)
