I have mixed feelings regarding this title I really like the premise and the author excelled at creating a feeling of pressure and anxiety that ramped up throughout the story. The repeated countdown to Albuquerque really added to the tension of the story (view spoiler).

What falls short for me is the characters; none of them seem real, I get a certain level of caricature is needed to make stories like this work but pretty much all their action felt like they were being railroaded into the plot rather than natural actions that give the plot a natural feeling.

I did enjoy the main storyline and feel like it was well written, the opening scene while is necessary for setting up later events I feel like was intentionally left rather vague and when we do find out more it’s essentially an info dump. There were plenty of opportunities to add lore into the story in a more natural way, and tie it to other characters/plot points. (happy to discuss separately from this review but not going to Monday morning quarterback here.)

That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the story itself; it is a really interesting use of possession lore and some other underutilized tropes. The story is written in an almost cinematic style making it really easy to get invested into the plot.

There are multiple narrators for this story which really helps make the POV shifts feel smooth. Hillary Huber; Neil Hellegers; Amara Jasper; Pat Grimes; and Qarie Marshall all did a great job with this book.

A Black and Endless Sky is a novel that will keep you wondering what its resolve will be until the very end. We are following mainly a sibling duo as they travel throughout the western part of the US running from conflicts and demons (literally and figuratively).

I am giving this book 3 stars. I was hooked from the prologue but then the first few chapters took me time to get into. I found myself connected to the characters as the chapters progressed. However, it still felt slow moving, even for a horror. I did enjoy the book and I never felt the desire to abandon the story I just wished that the action had been consistent and earlier. Toward the end, I found myself just wishing for answers and resolve to come and explain the center of this whole story. I prefer my horror to be more jump scare or slasher and this one was more of a literary horror to me.

The cover of this book reminded me of the covers for The Library at Mount Char & The Library of the Unwritten. Yes the cover comparison is odd and means nothing but I liked the cover.

This book was a horror/thriller. If you like body horror, here it is!

We have a brother/sister who were close until one left, years later they are reunited when one gets a divorce & they drive cross country back to their childhood town.

On the way the sister is involved in a freak accident and the strange supernatural events start from there.

I loved this story. I sat there thinking about the possibilities several times while listening to the audiobook.

I think each character made its rounds in my mind from like to hate or hate to like. LOL

It’s horror so be warned.

Thank you Dreamscape Media & NetGalley for the advance copy of this audiobook!. Loved it!!i

First want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this in exchange for an honest review! I was excited to see this up for an ARC because I had it on my TBR list. I was so engaged into the story that I got over half way through it on the first day. I didn't like 3 of the 4 characters. Nell, being 35, seemed to act like she was this 16 year old buttface. Her poor brother had just gotten a divorce and instead of being sympathetic she bashed him for "not being himself." She got a little more points for being so determined when it came to her family but at the same time I didn't care for her. Anna was opposite. I liked her at first and she just ended up being a grade A buttface. Terry is well... an idiot. Just going to leave it at that.

I did think it was going to go a route given where it was taken place but it didn't and I don't think I am too mad at it. I wish Matthew would have given more on the situation with Nell but it just felt... a bit flat? I gave it a 4 because despite all that I said the story in WHOLE was really good. I enjoyed following each and every character and to be honest if it was a movie I would freaking watch!

I was 100% hooked from the prologue. Open something you know you shouldn't? Yup, I'm here for that.

I was a little jarred after the prologue. The atmosphere changed enough that it took me a little while to get back into the story. I will say with confidence that everyone in this story are terrible people. I enjoy stories where the main characters aren't worth cheering for. I feel like it's an interesting challenge for the writer to convey. But as the story continued on, I found myself invested in seeing what was going to happen.

Be warned, there is body horror in this novel. Which, if we are going to dive into a gritty horror novel, I'm good with it. The intensity of the novel actively grew until the end. I loved how it built throughout. And I never could figure out where the story was going.

A Black and Endless Sky was a full and complete and satisfying horror novel. Also, the audiobook narrators all did a great job. Also, I love when there are separate narrators for each POV. It's an added cherry on top.

An estranged brother and sister take a road trip with lots of dark twists and turns. Along their trip they stop and a bar and end up in a major bar fight, they get away and continue on their road trip. They are being followed but that’s not their greatest concern. While traveling around the dusty old roads in the mid west of America Nell the sister disappears. Her brother, Jonah wakes up alone in the car and has no choice but to hike across the sandy desert to find his sister. He finally finds her deep within a very creepy cave in an old contradiction site. They continue on their road trip only to face several different horrors along the way….

“A Black and Endless Sky” was a pleasant surprise for me. I was intrigued by the description and premise, but I wasn’t expecting it to be this good! First and foremost, the narrators of the audiobook were excellent. It added to the plot to hear the wide variation of characters come alive through them.

As for the main storyline, we are following Jonah and Nell as they embark on a cross-country road trip to Albuquerque. This brother and sister duo used to be best friends, but a rift has opened between them and they’re struggling to reconnect. As they are passing through Nevada, something happens to Nell that changes everything.

This book is part road trip, part horror novel, part thriller, and part family drama (in its own way of course). As a whole, I loved it. It was well written, and it sucked me in right from the beginning. Let’s just say I spent a lot of time just listening to the audiobook as I tore through it very quickly. The narration splits between characters, which offers a variety of perspectives. The book was, quite frankly, original and engaging.

Overall, I loved this book! I would highly recommend it to any fans of the aforementioned categories. It is an easy read that you won’t want to put down. If you plan to listen to the excellent audiobook, I recommend that you cancel all of your plans so that you can just immerse yourself in it. I will definitely be buying a copy of this when it publishes, and I recommend that you do, too!

A brother and sister road trip that went horribly wrong. This book had a nice mix of thriller and horror. The beginning was a little slow, but then the pace really picked up. I loved the multiple POVs and thought all the narrators did a wonderful job.

A Black and Endless Sky follows siblings Nell and Jonah on what starts as a simple road trip back home after Jonah's divorce. However, pretty soon it's just one horrific thing after another.

The blurb would have you believe that this book is a supernatural horror, and while that element is certainly there, I feel like Lyons leaned more into gross-out horror. I generally avoid that kind of horror at all costs because well, it's not fun for me to read at all. There was one incident involved teeth (I'll spare you details) that literally almost made me puke. I gagged more than once. Don't get me wrong, I think this book was well-written and I liked Nell and Jonah. I just don't think it was for me and world have enjoyed more spooky otherworldly horror.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ALC. Hillary Huber, Neil Hellegers, Amara Jasper, Pat Grimes, and Qarie Marshall were fine narrators.

This novel read like a movie. The opening sequence setting the tone for a wild ride you won't soon forget. The author grants the reader a trifecta of content. The perfect amount of action, some severe body trauma for the horror lovers, and a solid plot that tracks from start to finish. It's rare when you have a horror story end the way this novel does, but I devoured it and salivated at the possibilities for the characters post-book. The plot was fresh in a genre often beaten to the ground, especially in today's media. It's rare to find a horror story that has sustinence as well as gore. Look no further than A Black and Endless Sky. The audiobook boasts a full cast and delivers quite a punch.

This novel deserves 10 stars, but I'll have to make due with 5. Perfect for fans of horror, but not sutable for those under the age of 16 as there is some harsh body trauma. This story would be excellent for a spooky book club and gives alot of thought provoking content.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an AudioARC in exchange for an honest review.
