“The Widow’s Husband” is a mystery/thriller by Lesley Sanderson. In this book, Rachel’s husband, Tom, left her for a girlfriend, Heidi. But one day, Tom disappeared. Nearly seven years later, Rachel is ready to declare Tom legally dead - but she receives a letter that appears to be from Tom, saying he wants to come home. Is Tom still alive (and if so, where had he been)? How will him being alive affect their children? Does Heidi have anything to do with Tom’s disappearance? What about Tom’s former co-worker, Freddie?
This book is told mainly from Rachel’s view, both present and past, but there are a few chapters told from others’ points of view. I found this book to be an interesting idea and mostly well executed and presented. I found the ending a bit rushed. I also didn’t feel like there were any real surprises - some of the shock I puzzled out earlier. Ms. Sanderson is a good writer, so this was a quick read and it held my attention.
Immersive Suspense…
For seven years Rachel has presumed that her missing husband Tom is dead. After all, he is soon to be declared legally dead. During these years Rachel has lived as a single mother but she has also discovered secrets about her missing husband. With just one month to pass until the law decides that Tom is dead a note appears throwing everything into chaos. Is Tom alive after all? Is he coming home? If so, how will those secrets pan out.. An immersive suspense with a credible cast of characters and an intriguing storyline. An entertaining page turner.
For some reason, I had a very hard time getting into this one. If anything, I was constantly annoyed by the characters. Especially the teenager daughter who wants to rebel against everything her mother says.
Add to that, the idea that this woman has been waiting 7 years to legally declare her missing husband dead to move on with her life. Now maybe I would have understood that better if they had actually been together when he disappeared. But no. He had actually left her several months prior for the much younger trade in he had been cheating on her with.
Then the big reveal seemed almost thrown together. But I’m sure some will love it, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

A ROLLERCOASTER.
Some secrets are best left buried, aren't they?
Rachel is living a miserable life since her husband Tom left her and her two daughters for another woman seven years ago leaving her to deal with her life as well as her daughter's alone and then he told her that he'd made a mistake and then he's disappeared.
Now after seven years Rachel is so sure that he's dead and she's going to declare him dead legally but then she recovered a note on the mat if her house. The handwriting is looping like Tom's. But Tom is dead
Who's doing all this? Tom or someone else who wants something from Rachel?
I was guessing in this game of cat and mouse.
Wow. This novel was brilliant.
Rachel"s character is so feminine. I loved her.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me an advance copy.
The Widow's Husband by Lesley Sanderson is a compelling read that held my attention and kept me fully engaged in the narrative from beginning to end.
Rachel's husband Tom disappeared seven years ago, leaving her to raise their two children as a single mother. So many questions remain unanswered as the years pass, but Rachel has finally reached a place where she is ready to have her husband declared legally dead, collect the insurance, and move forward. But as that date nears, Rachel receives a note in Tom's handwriting, stating that he is very much alive and wants her back. As Rachel reels from this, secrets about the man she thought she knew will come to light, and a seven year mystery will raise more questions than answers.
I always enjoy a Lesley Sanderson novel, and this latest proved no exception.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
This was a gripping read that was well written with an engaging and compelling storyline and well developed and captivating characters. It was mysterious, suspenseful and fast paced with so much unpredictability, I didnt know what to trust or what was happening. It was such an enjoyable read.
This was a gripping read which kept me hooked from start to finish. Lots of twists and turns which kept me reading on.
Rachel’s husband went missing seven years ago. She has raised her two children as a single mother and has someone in her life who seems to care for her. Now, one month before declaring her husband legally dead, a note appears that tells her he is coming home. Rachel wonders what this means for her life and family, and what secrets she will have to uncover to get to the truth. Lesley Sanderson’s book does not disappoint. I’ve found a new author to follow! #NetGalley #TheWidowsHusband
A gripping story, well written, kept me reading and I read it over a couple of days. I liked the concept of being close to the 'declare deceased' stage in a missing persons case, haven't seen that done in a thriller yet. The 'shocks' weren't as shocking as I'd have liked, but still enjoyable. I liked the complexity of little Lara and the tension Heidi bought to the story.
I love this book from start to finish, brilliant plot, believable characters and a wonderful ending!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Rachel’s husband disappeared 7 years ago and she is in the verge of declaring him dead and collecting his life insurance policy. In light of this, she is doing a big renovation on her house after struggling to make ends me for herself and her 2 kids, but as the 7 year mark approaches, Rachel starts to get letters for her missing husband indicating he may be alive.
I love the premise of a husband who disappears and was up to no good but we don’t know specifically what he was up to. In this one, he was up to no good in a sense but we find out about that early on. There were no big secrets or reveals here and that made it disappointing for me. I guess there were technically some reveals but no big secrets from the husband’s past like I expected. Unfortunately this one was sort of underwhelming for me.
Rachel is concerned about her oldest daughter, who can hardly remember her father and wants to try some sleuthing herself. Who can blame her? And her mother discourages her, not wanting Lara to get hurt. And of course, who can blame her for that.
Psychological thriller indeed, but it is a bit much about what all those characters are thinking.
And I was wondering about several things that were either unclear or inconsistent. First, a book club member that apparently knows Rachel, while she isn't part of that book club. Second, they way Tom leaves after that weekend before last: is he doing a hasty retreat feeling uncomfortable or is did they kiss on the doorstep?
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.
