First of all: I admire Gytha Lodge’s extra ordinary story telling skills and her brilliant efforts to create this moving series!
The detective Jonah Sheens, Juliette Hanson seem like your old friends you want to catch up, having long chats to learn about how their lives are going. Even though it was a little exhausting to read their POVs in the meantime you also try to concentrate on Keely’s heart wrenching, blood freezing story which tears your heart apart and force you take deep breaths to digest the horrible and tragic things you’re reading.
The beginning of the book was strong, making you drawn into the mystery immediately.
DCI Jonah Sheens has a peaceful Sunday by drinking at pub, thinking about his living and custody situations with his ex who recently gave birth to their baby daughter. Then suddenly a girl walks out of the woods, moving toward the direction of the pub: a red headed girl, 16, deep blue eyes, drifting, covered in blood. Whose blood is this? Did she hurt herself? Did somebody do harm her? Or something worse: did she kill somebody?
She sits next to Jonah, telling she’s ran away from foster care along with her 14 years old Nina . When Jonah takes her to the station, she promises to tell what happened to Nina but she has a condition: Jonah has to listen to sisters’ story from the beginning without interrupting. Jonah reluctantly accepts.
The story is truly surprising and there are so many unexpected, definitely you’ve never see it coming twists!
I enjoyed mostly listening to Keely’s story even though things she’s told make my heart bleed. That’s what makes Gytha Lodge a perfect story teller. The resonating, powerful voices of her characters directly address to your soul. You live in their brains and hearts. Totally understand, ache, accept anything you read about them devotedly.
Normally I was planning to give five stars but I think I’m addict of the series so I decided to round up 4.5 stars to 5 creative writing, perfect characterization stars!
I’m looking forward to read the next book of the series!
Special thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for sharing this amazing digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.
I like mysteries with unexpected twists as long as there is rationality and believability. No way did this plot make any sense to me. The "clues" left for the police by sixteen year old Nina were ridiculously vague, yet the police somehow figured them out. I know foster care can be bad for some kids, but encountering three different baddies over the course of a few years? Not likely. Transposing the identifiable personalities of the two sisters was really a stretch. And why bother trying to provide background stories for the police characters when you barely refer to them ever again? What was the point?
I'm sorry that I did not enjoy this book, but I thank you for the opportunity to read and review. I will only be posting a rating on Goodreads, but won't include a review.
Little Sister: A Novel (Jonah Sheens Detective Series Book 4), picks up where I least expected it to, but before I could even let that sink in, a bloodied redheaded teenage girl coming out of the woods threw me for another loop. Gytha Lodge did a fantastic job again! I absolutely love this series, Detective Sheens and his crew have an amazing chemistry with one another and I couldn't wait to see what happened in the end. Multiple twists and turns, manipulation and different POV kept me glued to my Kindle app. Very pleased with the 4th installment can't wait for the 5th! Thank you too Gytha Lodge and Netgalley for the complimentary ebook.
I enjoyed this book, as I have with the rest of the series. This one centers on 2 sisters who disappear from foster care- one of them approaches DCI Jonah Sheens but seems to want to play a game of cat and mouse in order for he and his team to find her sister.
There was a lot going on here and I enjoyed the detectives figuring out the clues (though some of them felt like a bit of a stretch). I enjoy a story with an unreliable narrator and you get this in Keely. I’ve seen others say that the twist was too confusing but I didn’t feel that way- I also didn’t see it coming at all, which is rare for me. There were a couple additional twists as well, and the entire story was fast paced from beginning to end.
I don’t read a lot of series because I generally think that delving into the main characters’ personal lives detracts from the story at hand, but I am invested in these characters and find them to be very real. The author strikes a perfect balance of letting the reader get to know them while still focusing on the main storyline. I can’t wait to see what happens next, as some hints were dropped as to what might be coming in the next book.
Overall, another winner by this author. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series. Note that there is a lot of child abuse in this book if that is a trigger for you; otherwise I’d strongly recommend this for those who like psychological thrillers and police procedurals. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was just an ok read for me,unfortunately. At some points the storyline seemed thrown together and confusing. That being said it was still very readable with a few twisty turns to keep you guessing.
Thanks to Random House Publishing Group - Random House, Random House Trade Paperbacks and NetGalley!
Jonah is a chief inspector enjoying a day off when a teen approaches him. She is a missing person along with her sister. She is covered in blood that is not hers and her sister is still missing. Is she a victim or a killer?
Hmm. I have so many mixed thoughts on this. Writing wise, there is a lot. There's rambling. I do like how it went back and forth and told a complete story. There's different POVs , which I think really add to the story. I didn't like how it seemed the reader needed to decide if the trauma the girls went through was made up or not. These are children and it felt almost icky. I get that that is the whole story and maybe I shouldn't have chosen this book, but it still is icky. However, it also really had the adult characters thinking about the system and how it fails kids every single day. You could really get the impression from them that they struggled with what to think and then felt bad about it. Books can make people uncomfortable and get them thinking and this book does exactly that.
3.75 stars rounded up!!
Little Sister started off so juicy and intriguing. I was getting slight Verity vibes (when you don’t know which story to believe!)
The first half of the book was paced just right for me, especially since we kept flipping perspectives which I like.
Towards the end, especially with THE reveal, I started getting confused. Not that I didn’t necessarily see this reveal coming, but I wish us as readers would have been able to string all the stories better together. After a while, it becomes a lot to remember and focus on that I stayed confused pretty much the rest of the book.
The conclusion made me wonder if this could have easily been 4 separate novels.
I do feel as if some aspects would have been less confusing had I read the other 3 books in this series first.
Overall, I did enjoy Little Sister and loved trying to solve the puzzles.
Little Sister kept me on my toes from beginning to end. I was left guessing what was going to happen as I turned each page. While I thoroughly enjoy a good page turner and plot twist, I felt like the plot twists got so convoluted toward the end that I had difficulty keeping characters straight.
The subject matter the book revolved around definitely needs to be discussed more. For a fiction book I think the author superbly brought to light the problems children face in foster care. Many children are failed daily by the system that is supposed to protect and provide for them. Detective books are entertaining, but this story went above and beyond and brought light to a serious matter.
The characters were very relatable. When I started reading this book I didn't realize it was 4th in Gytha Lodge's detective series. Finding this out was a treat because I do plan on reading the rest of the books in the Jonah Sheens Detective Series now.
I really enjoyed this domestic thriller. Crazy great sister characters. Lots of cat and mouse tension started at the beginning and did not let go!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book
I did not find this book an enjoyable read. It was often rambling and the movement from one scene to the next rather choppy. The storyline itself I found only mediocre with parts rather repetitive.
This book is about two teenage sisters who have had a troubled life living in one foster home after the other. One of the girl's stumbles into a party covered in blood saying that her sister is missing and she needs help finding her. They take her to the police station for questioning and she starts telling her tale of what happened. The police are searching and following clues that she is giving them. There are many twists and turns to the story with some very surprising results in the end. I enjoyed reading this book and would highly recommend it.
I received an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review
I’ve loved every book in this series and this one is my favorite one yet. Can’t go wrong with twisted teens taking down abusers and pedophiles! I hope these girls make a cameo in a future installment.
A joy to read.
So, I have to admit that I was expecting more of a suspense thriller. It’s definitely more psychological suspense – no thrills, but a bit of a twisty and sharp horrific tale to be sure.
I can’t really say that I liked our characters, even after we really get to know them. I can say that I felt terribly sorry for most of them and definitely wanted some righteous vengeance against others.
Also, I’m happy to say that I was nicely surprised by some of the reveals in this book. I definitely didn’t have a clue where the author was going!
Well written, intelligent, and occasionally heart-breaking.

Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for the eARC.
This was my first book in the series, but I thought it easily read as a standalone.
DCI Jonah Sheens is approached by a young girl covered in blood who tells him her sister is missing, but she won't say anything else unless he listens to her story. She is a fascinating character; could be a sociopath with her cold unfeeling manner, but is that the truth? She runs rings around Jonah and his team, not giving an inch.
I very much enjoyed this book, the twists and turns and the surprising ending. Definitely recommended!
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Random House Publishing Group-Random House and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Wonderful, well developed characters. A plot that keeps you entertained and reading.
This book was great, the characters were well developed. The plot was interesting. Highly recommend it.
As usual, I highly enjoyed this latest Gytha Lodge thriller! The plot moved quickly (but not too fast to follow) and I was continually surprised by each new revelation. Which I have to admit doesn't happen often. It's also nice to learn more about DCI Sheens team, each character keeps becoming more three dimensional and I especially enjoy the moments of banter between them. While this wasn't my favorite book in the series, I did highly enjoy it and finished it in two days. Can't wait to see what the author has in store for the next book!
This is a whip smart police procedural but not a typical one. We have two sisters, who have faced abuses in the foster care system, that have been missing for three days. When one of them walks out of the woods, with blood on her hands, she tells the police she won't disclose where her sister is until they listen to her story, from the beginning.
I loved the multiple points of view from the different detectives on the case and from Keely as well. What a tale she spins...is she to be believed? And what work the officers put in trying to solve her riddle. I did figure out the big reveal about half way through BUT I still thoroughly enjoyed this twisted tale and well thought out mystery. AND the author redeemed herself as there were a couple other twists I didn't see coming at all.
I should note here that this is part of a series and I haven't read any of the other books. Because of that I didn't fully understand DCI Jonah Sheens' backstory and that plays a small part in the book...BUT the mystery/police procedural part of the book does amazingly well as a standalone. My first book by this author but I will be checking out more of her work.
Good book! I wasn't too sure about this one in the beginning but um sure glad I kept reading! This book had suspense, intrigue, and so many twists and turns! The storyline was very interesting it had such a mystery/game feel too it! it was like a puzzle and very intriguing to figure out! I will definitely recommend reading this book! It was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
I didn't enjoy this one. It felt very disjointed and messily thrown together. There were a lot of things that just logistically didn't make sense.
