A quick fast-paced read from one of my favorite authors, Kelly Rimmer, I couldn't put it down. This story is told in two perspectives, one of a German woman in Nazi controlled Germany, the other a American farmer's daughter who grew up in America during the great depression.,
. We read two very different views on the impact of Hitler's regime and of how it affected people. It is always hard not to be biased about certain things and we all can sit here and point fingers, accuse and blame the German people who "seemed" to allow the horrible events of WWII to occur, but not being there, walking in their shoes, we do not know what we would have done or how far we would go to survive and protect those we love. This book looks at both sides and at the price paid by all for that terrible time in our history. I am glad to open my eyes some to the fact that it is not always black and white, but many, many shades of grey. What we believe may not be what really occurred or at the very least may only be a part of the picture. If this book teaches but one thing it is not be so quick to judge until we truly have all the pieces to the puzzle.
All historical fiction fans should read this book and learn from it. It is a very touching, somewhat sad story of how when people are quick to judge the outcome can be devastating.
Highly recommend, this book comes out in June so don't miss grabbing your copy.
Thank you to the publishers at Harlequin Trade Publishing, Braydon House and to Net Galley for the free ARC, I am leaving my honest review in return.
An interesting look at how WW2 affected the lives of two families on opposite sides. The story is engrossing and the characters strive to do what ever it takes to keep their families safe,. The story and plot keeps you guessing as to what will happen and how they will overcome their conflicts after the wars end. A great read.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I loved this book. This author is so gifted and every thing she writes is good. I’m so impressed with her talent with plot and character. This one is another winner
thanks for letting me review this book to Netgalley and the publisher
This book had me hooked from the first page! I read all 450+ pages in two days because I just could not put it down.
A remarkable historical novel that shows the painful reality of the families forced to leave Germany in order to survive, along with their scientists/breadwinners. A painful yet important topic we don’t read enough about!
A good read for an afternoon escape, a weekend at the beach, a long plain ride etc. It will take you away and won't disappoint. But also not the easiest of subjects although heartwarming in the end.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Harlequin Trade Publishing and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
I quite appreciate a title keeps me entertained and engaged throughout, mission accomplished.
I thought I had read the book before as it has the same title as a recently published book but Im so glad I started. It's a very different dual or rather triple storyline - two strong women who but for being on opposite sides in the war, could have been friends. It explores just how far one can/will go to protect your family. I enjoyed the development of both characters but did find the constant back and forward between not only characters but timelines very confusing. I loved the depiction of the 1930's in both countries, the contrast and the similarities for those who lived through these times in Germany and the USA.
I would recommend it to those interested in the WW2 time period but would have preferred if the storylines had run a little more smoothly rather than jerking us back in time to the 30's or the 40's before landing back in the 50's.
Oh my heart...this book is so very good. It is hard, it is gut wrenching, it is beautiful and it shows the perserverance and hope of so many people during the war. Kelly Rimmer knows how to write a historical fiction better than most and this one does not disappoint. Highly highly recommend. There's a reason Kelly Rimmer is so many people favorite authors, including mine!
Thank you to net galley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
In 1930, Jurgen and his wife Sofie are in Germany, joyful about Jurgen's successful career with the new rocket program, but worried about the rise of Hitler and his polarizing views. Their conflict of beliefs becomes very real and clear as they struggle with how to move forward while maintaining appearances.
In 1950, Sofie and two children have joined Jurgen in Huntsville, Alabama, where Jurgen has been working for the past year in America's space program. The move to Huntsville appears to be a breath of fresh air, until rumors swirl and they find that they are greeted with more hate than open arms. The family finds themselves the topic of many rumors and the target of vandalism and violence.
This story is raw, real, and sometimes uncomfortable, but an overall powerful story of WW2 that is inspired by Operation Paperclip which is an interesting point of history to learn more about.
Kelly Rimmer had done it again! She continues to be one of my favorite historical fiction writers! I really enjoyed the dual time line and the story being told from two perspectives. Wonderful! We'll be selecting for our summer bookclub and including this in our subscription Boxes! Also, gorgeous cover!
