This was an interesting read. It was full of history, which I love, and you can tell the author did a great job researching it. The different view points though, was a little hard to get used to. One moment it read like a textbook, the next like a regular romance, and then it would switch to diary mode. The plot was good though, so it kept me going.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book, I have sat between 3-4 stars so I would give 3.5 for this one the characters stories had me hooked throughout. It was extremely raunchy in places which I didn't expect. But that was more to do with the fact I didn't look at the synopsis!
What I loved was the author section in the back and that added a wonderful personal element.
I'd definitely read something from this author again.
Loved this book!! The story was entertaining and engaging and the characters where awesome! I loved reading about them falling in love during their adventures.
I thought the premise of this book was interesting, however, this book unfortunately wasn’t for me. I love MMF/ménage romances so I was excited to read this story, and there were parts of it that I felt were done well, but those parts were eclipsed by an awkward writing style. The transitions between plot points felt clunky and rushed, and I personally did not like the first person POV interjections from Adeline’s journal - I would have preferred it all be in either first or third person instead of a little bit of both. I did really like the concept of this story and I think that it had a lot of potential, but it fell flat for me.
I had mixed feelings about this one. This is very different from the previous book I have read by this author. There is plenty of history and I learnt a lot about this area and period of time. However if you are looking for an erotica book it takes quite a while to kick in, there is lots of history and waiting for the three people to meet. Once they do however, there are plenty of erotic scenes. All in all a good read just a different one from what I was expecting.
I started this book but ended up slim reading the book up to 20% and still hadn't gotten to the trio meeting. Honestly this is not erotica or at least not the kind I enjoy, and I was in a very smutty and erotica filled binge. And this was not satisfying at all.
The Golden rush is an MMF historical romance/erotica novel set in the 1850s. The novel is about how the three main characters come to be in San Francisco in search of a new life and gold buried beneath the city, this story is how their relationship develops in a time when life was extremely hard, lawless and wild.
This was my first MMF historical romance and I have to say I was a little disappointed. I wanted to desperately love this book, as steamy historical romance is my favourite, and as it was something a bit different to what I’m used to reading (M/F), but something fell a bit short for me. It was written in 3rd person with the added 1st person of Adeline’s diary entries, and while it showed the relationship of how all the main characters got together, I just found myself not caring about them. Having said that, early on there was a scene whereby a character dies and I felt myself feeling sorry for Jasper and the dialogue is really emotional. It is also the link into his relationship with Royal and at this point I was very excited to read the rest.
While this book has indeed got very steamy scenes, which is essential for a historical romance/erotica book, it just felt all wrong in a book which was essentially a history book about the gold rush in San Francisco in the 1850s with a little bit of a story on the side. I was disappointed with the writing style as it was more ‘tell’ rather than ‘show’ and I would have liked to have seen more description and dialogue about how the characters were feeling. There was a lot of added information to the progression of the story and a lot of it could have been cut from an edit if I’m totally honest.
I have rounded my review up to 3 stars from my initial 2 stars as the novel had promise and some of it was very good. I just felt that it could have been heavily edited to make it a more flowing read. I read this book rather quickly as I was hoping each chapter would get better, but unfortunately it didn’t and I left feeling completely underwhelmed.
*I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Jasper Langley and Royal Dawson met on their journey West whilst overcoming the trials of traveling on a wagon to make their fortune. We follow their adventures first at the beginning of the Gold Rush and then to the Nascent San Francisco where they use their expertise to establish a business. Whilst doing this they encounter Adeline Hart who has had her own adventure to travel to the city and joins her fortunes with theirs.I really enjoyed this historical tale of the gold rush, the frontier spirit and the freedom of being away from the strictures of society. Fun story.
I couldn’t feel much for the characters. I did like learning about the history of the area during that time, but found the story stiff and dry. I really wanted to like this one- it showed great promise.
This a very read and miss for me. The story is told from different POV from the main characters. I just didn't feel any connection to them or rooting for them. I know other people will love this story. The author really researched the Gold Rush Era and it is well explained.
This book is so interesting! It's an exceptional story with lovable characters. Once I started reading, I could barely put it down.
The beginning tells the story from a couple of different POVs on how the characters made their way to California, and I loved the technique the author used here. Once they all get together, the fun really begins, and it's a wild ride.
The book is full of heartfelt moments that will really get to you. It also has some humor and plenty of suspense. But mostly the people in the story just really come alive. And I learned a lot! History class never gave us this information about the gold rush.
I highly recommend The Golden Rush!
I wasn't sure I'd like this book as this genre is hit or miss for me. But I really loved the Gold Rush backdrop and enjoyed learning more about this historical period. The author is an excellent storyteller and describes characters beautifully. The story was well laid out and explained with great detail. I breezed through this book so fast because I couldn't put it down!
