There are two storylines in The Last Lie Told, which follows investigator Finley O'Sullivan who is looking into new evidence in an old murder case while dealing with her own trauma of being attacked and her husband being killed.
Finley's professional story is wrapped up by the end of this book but Webb has just scraped the surface of her personal story. I've read Debra Webb's The Undertaker's Daughter series which I loved and have a feeling this series will be just as good if the second book focuses more on Finley's personal life because I believe that is where the "good story" lives.
I'm giving The Last Lie Told 3 stars for setting the stage and will be picking up The Nature of Secrets to see what happens to with Finley next.
Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.
Finley was so relatable, I couldn't help but love this novel. Debra Webb knows how to write a story that captures her audience and keeps them guessing. As someone studying law, some things fell through the cracks but the story kept me interested enough to not allow that to bother me. Overall, a great novel!
Prologue was the best part of the book which instantly gripped me with the plot and i started reading it.
The writing was midium paced with little too much of descriptions. The main character was a strong one and i liked how she worked from case to case. Thrillers with legal case are not really my favourite trope so my interest flicker in between the chapters but it was a good one time read.
This is the first book in a new series about legal investigator Finley O'Sullivan. It took me a few chapters to get into the writing, which I would would describe as having a lot of short, fragmented sentences. Once I did though, it was immensely enjoyable.
There was a lot going on in this book with its main mystery and a mystery involving Finley's husband's murder that I assume will continue to future books in the series since it was left unresolved. As for this book's mystery, I'm always into plotlines involving complicated family dynamics and this one didn't disappoint. There were plenty of twists and turns throughout and while i thought I knew where things where going, it ended up in a completely different direction. Some susepension of disbelief was needed for that ending, but still, I enjoyed this book overall and look forward to more in the series.
Wowzer! This book was one heck of a roller-coaster ride. A grieving widow trying to make peace with her past, a re-opened murder case that takes the bad guys by surprise, a traumatic past involving twin sisters and a web of lies and deceit.
I lost count of the number of twists and turns in this story. Not just that, the lies - gosh! As Finley digs deeper, she learns everyone on the suspect list has something to hide. And they have lied about certain things - alibi, relationships, etc. Whom should Finley trust? There comes a time when Jack too feels betrayed by his client.
I never saw the final twist coming. It wasn't until the end that Finley realized who the real killer was - but it was too late by then, as she was standing face-to-face with them! The twist itself was simply mind-blowing. Totally unexpected and jaw-dropping.
I am eagerly waiting to see what's next for Finley. Since there has been some development in her husband's murder case, things are going to get murky soon.
If you are looking for a gripping, intense and completely engrossing mystery with loads of jaw-dropping twists, I highly recommend you to give The Last Lie Told by Debra Webb a try.
I very much enjoyed this book! This was my first read from Debra Webb and she did not disappoint. I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't get through this fast enough to find out what happened. Loved the twists, and felt the characters were well developed.
This book sure took off when it got started! I feel like there were so many different avenues Finley was following that at times it was a little hard for me to keep it all straight but I was really intrigued in hearing how all the pieces were going to fit together. I had a pretty good feeling that I knew what was going to happen in the end and I was correct in one part but didn’t see the other part coming. I really enjoyed the book and how fast paced it was that didn’t make you feel like it was dragging on, instead it felt like so much was happening but in a short amount of time and I couldn’t wait to figure out how it ended! I look forward to reading more from this author and hope to get some unanswered questions solved in the next book that comes out next year.
The first in a new series featuring investigator Finley O'Sullivan. Five years ago, a prestigious member of the Nashville community was murdered and his killer was arrested. Now in present day, the killer is saying he had help - from the man's daughter. The problem is that he has twin daughters, both of whom claim innocence. Things get even more complicated when their mother is murdered as well. Finley doesn't know who to trust. Moreover, she is still dealing with her own trauma and problems from her husband's recent murder.
I liked this story although at times it was a bit slow. I wish there had been less drama throughout about Finley's husband, especially since this was her first book. Even if it was an epilogue situation, I think it wouldn't have disrupted as much. I think I will read the next Finley book because I think it has promise and I've read other of this author's books I've enjoyed a lot!
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review,
Debra Webb is one of those reliable authors who can always be counted on to tell a good story and this one is no different. A record executive is murdered. A man is in prison for the murder. Man takes back confession and claims to have evidence that one of the executive's whack-job daughters may have committed said murder. Enter Finley O'Sullivan, attorney/PI. I really liked Finley, which is a good thing, as there were several other storylines within this story that I feel will be part of a second book, but I digress. This one was fast-paced and full of interesting developments and characters. The reveal of the murderer was a surprise. Look forward to the next one!
Thank you to #NetGalley, Debra Webb and Thomas & Mercer for this ARC. All opinions are my own!
I found Finley to be relatively likeable, and interesting. Her backstory involving her dishonest, murdered husband added a unique element to the story, but I felt like it mostly served as a setup for a second book.
I honestly had no idea who was responsible for the main murder, so that one caught me off guard. I found the ending regarding the twins to be pretty confusing and it took rereading those pages a few times to figure out what was actually happening. I think that section could have been written in a more concise way.
Overall a fun/easy read
The book had me from the go. I had to finish this in one sitting. It is extremely well written and with some interesting characters.
This is the first book in the installment and does a brilliant job in setting the context for the book and series. It centers around an investigator who is facing her own demons and grief. There is a murder case in parallel with a convict recanting his statement, setting off a chain reaction with multiple characters and twists. While I could guess one of the twists in the latter half, the book definitely keeps you on the edge guessing.
Looking forward to the next book for some of the reveals teased in this book. Also looking forward to see how some of the dynamics shape up.
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a honest review!
This was a great book. I loved every paragraph, every sentence and every word of this masterpiece! I read it in 12 hours, which is a lot for me to do! It had everything and more laid out in the novel! I sure hope she writes more! I am totally hooked!
I very much enjoyed this book, the twists were well-thought out and the suspense just kept building towards the tipping point.
Full review to follow on my blog.
This is the first book in a new series, but I didn't actually know that when I was reading it (oops) so I thought it was a standalone. It ends off with some mysteries unsolved, so I had guessed there must be another book in the works.
I loved the mystery and how it was solved - even though I had it figured out by around 70%. I thought there were just too many characters and things going on though, that I couldn't keep everything straight.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book.
This book was good. I wasn't particularly surprised by any of the revelations in the book. I would read it again, but there's noting that stands out about this novel. The characters are good, the plot is fair.
This book is filled with interesting characters - an aspiring musician turned murdered, crazy twins, attorneys with haunted pasts, and more. Finley O’Sullivan is tasked with investigating a convicted murderer’s accusations against an upper class woman. The task is really to untangle a mess of lies told by everyone involved while navigating many twists and turns in the story.
The Last Lie Told is a twisted, unpredictable thriller. Finley O’Sullivan is an investigator for criminal lawyer and her namesake, Jack Finnegan. A convicted murderer changes his story on a murder that sent him to jail and sick’s investigators on a set of twins that were the victim’s daughters. In a back and forth manner, the story unfolds in an unreliable fashion that keeps you guessing just who is the guilty party and if anyone is actually telling the truth. Some of the story was shocking, some was predictable but the novel made for a suspense filled thrill ride. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.
This was my first Debra Webb book and I got through it quickly. Her writing is good but I was disappointed that a major part of the story was left unresolved at the end of the book. This is the first in the Finley O’Sullivan series, so maybe Webb plans to address that storyline in a future book. Finley O’Sullivan is a legal investigator who used to be a lawyer. Her husband was murdered and she was brutally attacked but that case has never been solved. Finley frequently has to lie and deceive to solve her cases, but almost every character in this book is lying about something. Finley is working on a high-profile case of the murder of Lance Legard, the head of a top record label. The man in prison for his murder has taken back his confession and claims he has evidence to prove that the victim’s daughter did it. Finley takes on the case and finds out that Lance Legard had identical twin daughters who tell two completely different stories about the murder. Finley has to wade through a lot of lies to get to the truth. Thanks to #netgalley and #thomas&mercer for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Netgally and publishers for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book for free in exchange for my honest review and opinions.
This was my first Debra Webb novel. I enjoyed this novel and story line. There is definitely enough to bring me back for the next novel in the series. 4/5 stars. This was the second mystery I've recently read that had a similar twist in the suspect. The twists and turns did keep me guessing until the end. Really looking forward to diving deeper into the lives of Finley, Jack, Judge, and Matt.
The Last Lie Told – Debra Webb
This novel opens with a jailhouse meeting. Convicted killer Charlie Holmes, after 5 years of imprisonment for a murder he had confessed to, has decided to recant his confession, telling his attorney that it’s time the world knew the truth…
Finley O’Sullivan is an attorney, presently working as a private investigator for family friend and godfather, Jack Finnegan. A widow, after a home invasion killed her husband Derrick and left her for dead, she is determined to bring the killers to justice, in her own time and in her own way. Having just been interrogated by the local police as a witness in a convenience store robbery that went bad, she heads over to Jack’s office only to learn that no one has heard from him. Knowing of Jack’s many haunts, she heads out to find him, in hopes that he, a recovering alcoholic, hasn’t fallen off the proverbial wagon.
She discovers Jack at his wooded cabin, sober and sleeping, and upon getting him up and moving, he tells her he has a job for her. Sophia Legard has hired him to represent her twin daughters, Olivia & Cecilia. Now that Charlie Holmes has recanted his confession of killing her husband, Sophie fears that suspicion will fall upon their children. Jack, knowing well of Finley’s abilities to detect truth from lie, asks her to investigate the twins, their backgrounds and their recollections of the events surrounding their fathers death.
As Finley begins digging and meets with both girls, she quickly realizes that stories don’t add up. Olivia has long since left the area, living in California, while Cecilia remains home with her mother due to agoraphobia and doesn’t ever leave the house. Both girls refuse to be in the same room together, and both are quick to lay blame on the other, each claiming the other is out to get them. But something is way off with this family…. Was this a case of patricide, or something much more sinister?
I very much enjoyed this novel - as I do all of Debra Webb’s work - and with the unanswered questions that abound, I am presuming this is the first novel in another trilogy. Some of my many unanswered questions are seemingly insignificant, like the college roommates that were seemingly mis-documented, and the manner of death of one of the key characters still seems strange. What is with Finley’s mother, her disdain for her own daughter - and her estrangement from Jack? The big questions are clearly part of an upcoming novel, which won’t be released until March (Yep, I’ve already checked!), so the reader is left hanging a bit… But, nonetheless, an action filled, suspenseful who-dun-it that will leave you anxious for the next!!
