Cade is angry at the world and Hope wants to hide from it. Will this unlikely duo find each other and become a family? Only time will tell. The Best Is Yet to Come was such a wonderful read with the usual caring touch of Debbie Macomber's pen. Debbie has the ability to write a small town in a way that doesn't simply glorify small-town living, but immerses her readers in them, both the ups and the downs of small-town life. While the characters in Oceanside, Washington, enjoy the idyllic setting their town offers in the form of school spirit and the simpler way of life, she didn't shy away from the scandals and lack of opportunities that are also part of it.
Debbie's gentle voice filled the pages in both Hope and Cade. Both characters had suffered in life because of the military, and they were both wearing a cloak of loneliness, sadness, and fear. Until they met each other for the first time at the animal shelter and connected on a level even they didn't understand at the time.
Hope found hope in a dog named Shadow. The dog suffered from fear and loneliness, too, until Hope worked patiently with him to gain his trust.
Cade found hope in Hope. Watching her dedicate time and energy to an animal that had been cast aside, just as he had, helped him see that not everyone in the world was heartless and considered him damaged beyond repair. Through counseling, group therapy, and spending time with Hope, Cade learned that his self-destructive behaviors didn't have to continue, and that included the estrangement with his parents. Yes, there were the usual misunderstandings in a new relationship that resulted in anger and shutting down rather than patience and understanding, but even then, the reader could sense how much the two characters still cared about each other. The PTSD storyline was appropriately written and didn't overly dramatize the condition that many veterans deal with every day.
The subplot of Hope's job at the local high school brought some mystery and drama to the book. While it was difficult to like Callie, a young teenage girl, in the beginning, you slowly began to see her attitude was more out of desperation to help her brother than anything. While she came off as slightly spoiled and unwilling to listen, not to mention mean to the boy she wanted help from, you soon realize she was just scared she was going to lose her twin. Hope was able to relate to her in a way no one else in the town could, and soon, Hope, Callie, and Spencer knew they had to do something to save Ben before it was too late. The twist at the end of the subplot was extremely unexpected, but very well done. Even Callie and Spencer found a HEAFN.
Oceanside, Washington is always a beautiful place to visit and is filled with old friends, new friends, and the highs and the lows of living in a small town. Kudos to Ms. Macomber for writing yet another beautiful romance that will keep you turning the pages until Hope and Cade find their happily ever after.
Thanks to Netgalley for this book. I personally loved this book, another heart felt story dealing with love, loss, PTSD, drugs, and emotional scarring. Another win for Debbie Macomber. As a mother with an active duty son, my heart was really tugged hard while reading about Cade's struggles after serving his time in Afghanistan, and Hope someone who has suffered the loss of a family member to the same war. Hope and Cade come together when patience and love is shown through Shadow a rescue dog. I found this book both uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time.
Another feel good romance from Debbie Macomber! This book introduces us to Hope and Cade, two newcomers to Oceanside, a town we've seen in the last few books Mrs. Macomber has written. I generally like the town, but I don't feel like it is as fleshed out as Blossom Street was in her previous series. I can't quite picture what the town looks like and even though this book must have taken place in the fall, I never felt the autumn vibes from reading the book.
The characters of Hope and Cade are very interesting and I did enjoy reading how their relationship progressed; through them trying to deal with grief and eventually opening up to each other and trusting each other with their trauma. They seemed to get together pretty quickly and I was surprised to see there was still half the book to go! The story goes through the typical romance trope of Cade finding Hope with someone and immediately cutting her out of his life because she can't be trusted. Eventually by the end of the book, he realizes he is completely lost without her, but I didn't care for the "not trusting" part, it seemed very contrived. How Cade and Hope reunite in the end was interesting and I liked how it finally tied in the main story with this high school storyline that had been running throughout the book. The high school storyline follows Spencer and Callie as they are trying to uncover who is selling drugs to the football team which was OK, but again, it felt really overdone and I didn't really like any of the high school characters. It was also hard to believe who the person was who came forward in the end because aside from them being mentioned earlier in the story, we hadn't seen or heard anything from their point of view.
Overall, the book is a decent read. I liked it better than Cottage by the Sea, but not quite as much as A Walk Along the Beach which had me crying throughout. I still love Debbie Macomber's books and I definitely would pick this up as a fan of her work, but I don't feel it's one of her strongest. Hopefully the next time we see Oceanside, we'll get to read more about the town and it will have some of the warmth of Blossom Street or Cedar Cove.
Debbie Macomber is no stranger to most women’s fiction readers, and I’ve read quite a few of her books. I tend to read one when I need an easy relaxing read. However, something was different about this book. The issues faced by the characters were more developed, anchored on two prominent issues in today’s societies, and thus, emotions ran high. These issues are often glossed over by those who are not directly affected. However, in this novel, Debbie reaches in and grabs ahold of your heart and soul.
I felt like I was right there with them, experiencing their trials and tribulations. I could easily relate to each character and was deeply affected.
I rated this book 4.6 rather than a 4.0 because the two main issues are extremely important in life today and I feel that they need much more attention. I appreciate that Debbie took the time to write a book about these issues. They are: 1) soldiers returning home with physical and emotional issues while there are few programs to adequately address their problems and get them back on their feet.
2) Doping of high school athletes to enhance their performance.
I want to thank Author Debbie Macomber, Ballantine Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this Advanced Reader’s Copy. This is a voluntary review, and all comments and opinions are entirely my own.
I enjoyed this book. The story reflected so much of the difficulties that so many carry with them in our world today. Two broken souls afraid to reach out but through patience and persistence when we listen and stretch ourself we can begin to heal. I loved how even the dog had to learn again to trust! Ms. Macomber is one of my all time favorites and appreciate being able to read an ARC of this book.
The Best Is Yet to Come by Debbie Macomber weaves the threads of several lives together as they each face a personal crisis. Hope Godwin is starting her life alone in the world since her twin brother died. Hope enjoys her job at the local high school in Oceanside, CA . and carefully deals with the drama that unfolds among certain students. Hope volunteers at a local animal shelter and bonds with Shadow, and I was happy she adopted him! She also meets someone who will become special in her life at this shelter, Cade Lincoln Jr. He was sentenced to community service and is trying to work through PTSD problems from his time of active duty with the marines.
This is a story of grief, healing, friendships, and love among a community of people needing understanding and support. Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for the opportunity to read this book.

I received an arc from NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
Cade was injured while deployed and as he runs into some trouble back home he realizes it is not just a physical injury that troubles him. Suffering from PTSD he gets into trouble with the law and a judge orders him to Community service. Volunteering at an animal shelter he meets Hope.
Hope too is struggling with issues from her past and moves to Oceanside for a fresh start. While volunteering at the animal shelter she meets Cade and slowly but surely she helps Cade break down his barriers.
As they start growing their relationship they find it’s not all roses all the time and both need to work through trust issues. Also brimming is a school Football team issue and Hopes involvement in being a counselor..
Definitely some twists and turns in this book but a well thought out and written story.
Hope Godwin has moved to Oceanside, Washington for a new beginning after thr death of her twin brother. Cade Lincoln is a wounded ex-marine who is struggling both physically and mentally. Hope is also dealing with challenges with the students in her drama class. Hope and Cade both volunteer at the shelter and are drawn to Shadow. Shadow is a rescue who is withdrawn and agitated when approached. Hope feels a connection between the two and hopes to rescue them both! Will she be able to help them both and find peace for herself.

What a wonderful book! I am a huge fan of Debbie Macomber, and love all of her books. But, this is by far my favorite.
It is a story with very real characters, with real life problems. Touches on PTSD, drugs, loss, forgiveness, and second chances. The main character, Hope and Cade have each had some major upsets in their lives. In their own way, they are hiding from their pasts, just getting by day by day. Together they find a way to move past what was, and find a future together. There are other characters, with some sub plots that help the story flow and develop. There is even an adorable four legged guy that deserved the second chance he got.
This booked hooked me from the start, and I couldn't put it down. Highly recommend .
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Hope is looking for a fresh start in a new town. She thinks a new location will help ease the grief she suffers from after the death of her twin brother. She enjoys her job as a teacher at a local high school. Her landlord convinces her that she should volunteer at the local animal shelter, which she reluctantly agrees to do. There she meets Shadow, a dog no one can get near. Yet day by day, Hope earns Shadow’s trust, much to the surprise of the staff and other volunteers.
A former Marine, Cade is suffering from PTSD and grief over losing two of his friends. He believes he should have died with them. After an altercation in a bar, Cade finds himself in front of a judge, sure he’ll be spending time behind bars. But the judge gives him a second chance to turn his life around. Part of his sentence is to do community service, which lands him at the animal shelter where Hope is volunteering.
Hope and Cade slowly get to know one another. He comes out of his shell more and more and is there to help Hope when an incident involving students and a staff member at the high school escalates.
A story of loss, trust, healing, and new beginnings, with drama, danger, and a HEA.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Debbie has done it again! A great story of The trials of life love and forgiveness. Cade and Hope were perfect for each other. Helped heal each other 💙
A good backstory on Spencer and Callie’s high school challenge’s and how they over came them! Our world need more judges like Judge Walter’s!
Enjoyed this book very much. Debbie never fails 🙂
This is such an endearing book. It’s about enduring loss, pain, grief and unimaginable horrors. Cade was such an angry man when he was medically discharged from the military as many of our soldiers are. Ms. Macomber gives us a small glimpse into the struggle our military men face when they come back from war. Hope too has suffered a loss of a love one because of the war and is struggling with unimaginable grief. She is such a warm and caring person. There is a secondary story involving high school students. That just reminded me how glad I am that time of my life is well over. This book was thoughtfully written. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
Thank you to Debbie Macomber, the publisher, and NetGalley for the chance to read Ms. Macomber's newest story early. And as expected, this was a great, modern story with characters you grow to know and love and a story that you don't want to see end.
Debbie has done it again. This was a great weekend read that makes me feel connected to the people and the town. She did a great job of writing about mental health/ PTSD and how it effects day to day life in little ways.
If you love Debbie Macomber books (and really, who doesn't), you will probably love this one too.
There is a lot of emphasis on war veterans and post traumatic stress related to war. Kudos to recognizing these heros. I personally thought the nickname Hope give to Cade is demeaning and didn't like it.
Also there is support of the local humane society and Hope (central character) goes out of her way to befriend a dog that probably would have been euthanized.
And also ties to being a twin.
Rounding up to 5 stars because of ties to veterans; probably a 4.25 star book.
Thank you to NetGalley, Debbie Macomber the author and to the publisher Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine Books for the opportunity to review this advance read copy in exchange for an honest review. Publication date is 12 July 2022.
It's been a while since I've read a Debbie Macomber book. The Best Is Yet To Come is a heartwarming novel about people in need of fresh starts. Cade is a vet who is trying to make sense of his life since returning to the States. Hope is a high school teacher beginning a new job in a new town. They meet as volunteers at the local animal shelter and slowly become friends. Also, part of the story involves events at the high school which adds a bit of drama to the novel. I enjoyed it all and can recommend to fans of Women's Fiction, light romance, and the author.
4.5 stars rounded up
Debbie Macomber is at her best! Two wounded people, starting over, are brought together by a special dog to find love with one another.
Hope moves to Oceanside, hoping to escape the reminders that she is all alone in the world now that her twin brother has died.
Wounded marine Cade is suffering from survivor's guilt after losing two brothers-in-arms in battle.
Shadow is an abused and abandoned dog who trusts no one until Hope comes into his world and shows him patience and kindness.
This simple act touches Cade as he watches the growing relationship between Hope and Shadow, and he realizes he wants in!
This was such a touching story of how people, even in their own brokeness, can help others to heal.
Thank you to Debbie Macomber, Random House, and NetGalley for the advance review copy.
The Best Is Yet to Come by Debbie Macomber I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Hope and Cade and Shadow, of course, more than deserve the HEA coming their way, A lovely heartwarming romance with interesting and realistic secondary characters. Was glad to see that Silas found his soul mate. Wouldn't mind finding out more about Spencer and his friends.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
The Best Is Yet to Come by Debbie Macomber 4 stars
Hope Godwin lands in Oceanside, WA for a new start. As a new teacher in a small community, she is hoping that new people and places will help her heal from the death of her twin brother, Hunter. Her landlord recruits her to volunteer at the animal shelter where she meets Shadow, an abused dog and her fellow volunteer, Cade Lincoln, Jr. Cade, an injured veteran has his own demons and problems. This volunteer job is part of his community service requirement from the court after he gets into trouble. Throw in teen drama, sports doping and criminal behavior and you have a nice Debbie Macomber book.
This is Book #3 in the Oceanside series and can be read as a standalone. It was an enjoyable and fast read with two main characters you can cheer for. Hope is a strong character, able to forgive with a practical streak. Cade was a little problematic, but he stepped up when it counted. The only thing that was a problem for me was one of teen characters. I found her unlikable and wanted the geek character to say no and goodbye. I look forward to Ms. Macomber's next book.
Thank you Netgalley and Random House / Ballantine Books for this ARC.
