The Best is Yet to Come is the third book in prolific author Debbie Macomber’s Oceanside series. Hope Godwin recently relocated to Oceanside, Washington. After losing her twin to enemy fire in Afghanistan Hope is having a difficult time moving forward. Finding a teaching position in quiet Oceanside was a blessing.
However, Hope still feels like an outsider until her landlord suggests she volunteers at his animal rescue organization. In doing so she encounters two entities that belong in her future. First is Shadow, the terribly mistreated canine that only seems to respond to Hope. But maybe even more so is the hurting veteran Cade, who also seems to respond to her spirit.
This is a lovely book that may just help people understand and respond correctly to those who have suffered, canine or human. I very much enjoyed this book and I do recommend it!
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this ARC publication for an honest review.

Our two main characters are both dealing with grief and heartbreaking loss. Cade is an ex-marine struggling with the deaths of two friends killed in action. Cade was wounded but survived so he has physical and emotional scars. Hope is trying to figure out how to live in a world that her twin no longer is part of. An outlying story is about a dog named, Shadow. The animal is brought to a shelter where Cade and Hope volunteer. Hope's patience and care in gaining Shadow's trust does not go unnoticed by Cade...ironically, Cade and Shadow mirror one another and Hope's tender approach to both of them helps them heal.
This is a book filled with hope, second chances, forgiveness, healing and being open to living a happily ever after...
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for a chance to read and review this wonderful book! I have read almost all of Debbie Macomber's book and this one does not disappoint! This is a great stand alone small town romance that will have you loving the characters and cheering them on as they fall in love!
I admit to being a huge fan of Debbie Macomber! I have collected every single book of hers that I can get my hands on. In her new book, in typical Debbie Macomber fashion, she does not disappoint. Two veterans, one physically wounded and one emotionally wounded; a lost and lonely, anxiety ridden dog from years of torment and abuse: How doe these three amazing characters find each other, find a way past their own torments in order to help someone else and make a life for all of them? Don't missing this book. It will touch your heart for years to come, which is exactly what Debbie Macomber does best.
The Best is Yet to Come is yet another success for Debbie Macomber. Her stories draw you in and treat you like you've always been a part of them and Cade and Hope are no exception.
Cade had been self destructive after his discharge from the Army. He's the classic example of someone not dealing with survivors guilt. He's given a second chance to get himself back together. He doesn't have to like it, but he may just find opening himself back up is the one thing that will help him heal.
Hope is trying to heal from the loss of her brother, her twin and starting over in a new place seemed like the perfect solution. Teaching at a new level and connecting with her students fulfills most of her time. When the suggestion came to volunteer at the animal shelter she decided it was another way to honor her brother. Little did she know meeting the often quiet and standoffish Cade would give her more than a new friend. Even the reluctant beginnings opened up the possibility that maybe they needed to find each other to deal with the grief and loss and to build a new tomorrow together.
This is a Women's Fiction/Clean Romance. I really loved getting to know the two main characters. Both of the main characters are overcoming something and need each other's friendship. I love the dog in this book, and I love that even the dog character in this book is overcoming something. There was so much going on in this book, but I really think that Debbie did a great job. Even though there was so much going on it was easy to read and keep up with. The ending was so good. This is a great book with lots of drama, great characters, and so many lessons. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Ballantine Books) or author (Debbie Macomber) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
Note: I have purchased a copy of this book.
Debbie never disappoints. This is a story that will grip you from the start. The struggles of loss and recovery. Very well done!
Debbie Macomber can always be counted on to deliver sweet, breezy, escapist fiction, and "The Best is Yet to Come" is no exception. I flew through this in 24 hours and found it--like all of Macomber's books I've read--a nice breath of fresh air between heavier reads, but a bit too fluffy for my liking.
This heartwarming and redemptive story lacked some dimension and depth, and ended up too simplistic for me; it would translate beautifully as a Hallmark movie and is bound to please Macomber's loyal readers. All in all a quick, light read but not one I"d jump to recommend.
This is a story of Hope Godwin, who is arriving in a new area for a new beginning where there aren’t constant reminders of her loss. She is a teacher and loves her new job. When asked to volunteer at an animal shelter she hesitantly agrees. There she encounters Shadow, an abandoned and abused dog that does not allow anyone to approach him. She tries caring and patience to see if she can save him. Then there is Cade Lincoln Jr. an angry veteran who battles survivor's guilt and is on a one-way road to destruction. Court-ordered into therapy and public service he goes to help at the animal shelter.
I enjoyed the read it flowed easily and kept your interest. Some added plot twists as Hope and Cade feel out a relationship when each has their pain to deal with. Can they trust one another when they are both emotionally broken?
Thank you, NetGalley, and publishers Ballantine Books for allowing me to read this advanced eARC this is my honest opinion. If you like romance, and woman’s fiction you will enjoy this book.
Hope in Oceanside.
Cade has anger issues, along with his only friend being a bottle, after he is inured in the military and has not adjusted to life. out of it He's mandated by a judge to perform community service and its at the animal shelter he meets Hope Goodwin (best character name, right?). Hope is mourning her own loss, her twin brother who was also in the military. Cade and Hope are an unlikely match, but a dog named Shadow helps nudge them along. Oceanside is a character as well, brimming with even more characters
Recommend.
The Best Is Yet to Come by Debbie Macomber is a marvelous relevant sweet women’s fiction/ romance story. Starting over is hard especially when there are struggles that must be overcome. I loved getting to know the main characters - Hope Godwin, Cade Lincoln, and the memorable Shadow along with students is Hope’s classes. Watching the growth, change, love, and bonding of the first three is such pleasure to read.
One of the best from Debbie Macomber which goes to show that truly The Best Is Yet to Come. Highly recommend.
The publisher through Net Galley provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.
This book is another hit! I loved it. I loved the setting and the characters, and the story kept me interested from cover to cover. Macomber is a master of creating a world that plays out in your mind like a movie while you read. You see the story coming to life, you watch the characters through their ups and downs and want nothing but the best for them. This book has everything and you will adored it too. I promise! I highly recommend it! So grab it now, as it released today!
After the death of her twin brother in Afghanistan, Hope is left with no family. She moves to Oceanside, Washington for a new start, teaching at the high school and settling into the community. When her landlord convinces her to volunteer at the local shelter, she meets two troubled souls, one human one canine. Shadow was starved and severely abused, letting noone near him. Cade could relate, injured in the marines and grieving his fellow soldiers he lost. But Hope has a lot of love to give, and the more time she spends with each, the more they start to open up and welcome her. But with the troubles she's entangled in with her students and Cade's problems resurfacing, will their fragile connection snap?
Debbie Macomber has a wonderful style of writing that, even though most of the time I can guess what's going to happen, I get comfy, settle in, and keep turning pages. I loved the connection between the recovery of both man and dog. Hope, even suffering her own heartbreak, had so much patience and love to give. This was a great story!
I received an advance reader copy of this book. The views and opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and given voluntarily.
The Best is Yet to Come, is a wonderful story about forgiveness, understanding and romance. The story begins with Cade, an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, is being sentenced for his role in a bar fight. The judge moves his case on the docket to last without any explanation. As he stands before her, he answers the judges questions before he is sentenced. The judge is aware that he has issues from his service, and suspends his sentence, on the condition he must undergo counseling and PT, and community service. Shocked at this turn of events this is his only chance to stay of of jail.
Hope is a teacher at the local high school. She is new to the area having has just moved to Oceanside. Her landlord suggests that she might want to volunteer at the local animal shelter where she might meet people and become friends. Cade is doing his community service at the same animal shelter where they slowly become friendly, but at first he doesn't want to talk to anyone. When a dog at the shelter is very aggressive with everyone but Hope, he becomes impressed with how patiently Hope deals with an abused dog no one else can handle.
Hope gets involved in a situation at school where lives are in danger. Hope will accept Cade's help several times while their relationship continues to grow. A young man will turn up missing from school on the night of an important football game. Hope will need everyone's help to find him.
This is an strong and emotional story with characters that deal with real issues oftentimes not seen from the other side of the story.
I always look forward to a new book by Macomber. Oceanside, WA is a quiet beach community, home to,two, people who need each other, but don’t realize it yet. The book is about second chances: a wounded vet who can’t let go of the, past; a high school teacher mourning her aloneness; and an abandoned dog who needs love.
The reading is smooth and has plenty of bumps written into the plot,to make it feasible. The only thing I didn’t buy was the way Spencer and Callie ended up; too much water under the bridge for it to be believable.
I was a bit startled to read in the beginning that Macomber wishes to retire.
A fantastic second chance romance where love, hope and trust help two people move on from the past and find happiness. Cade is a broken man who lost his best friends while serving his country. He has hit rock bottom and is given a second chance when he gets into legal trouble. While working his community service hours he meets Hope and something about her makes him want to start living again.
Hope is alone in the world and is slow to let people in. She is volunteering at the animal shelter and manages to bring a testy animal from being put down to living with her. She is drawn to Cade, but he is standoffish at first. As they get to each other they reveal what had happened and learn to rely on each other.
A truly heart felt story about coming out the other side stronger than what you were. They were the perfect match for the other and learned how to be their best selves together. I received an ARC and this is my honest, voluntary review.
Another lovely book from Debbie Macomber who writes wonderful small town stories with engaging characters, flaws and all. Hope, from Los Angeles, has a new job as a high school in Washington State. She has no family left as her twin brother has died in Afghanistan. Besides teaching school, she volunteers at a pet shelter. Cade is a veteran who was injured when an IED exploded, killing his 2 buds. He is injured, but also not in a great headspace. When he get in trouble destroying a bar the judge orders him to get physical therapy, counseling, and volunteer at the pet shelter. This is the story of their journey towards a relationship with many pitfalls along the way. Just the kind of story I love.
Debbie Macomber is a favorite author of mine and this book proved exactly why. If you are looking for a steamy romance go find another book, though I personally think there is a reason why clean romance books are still popular. There is something to be said in the chase and the kiss that changes the relationship and not putting all the business out for everyone to know.
In this book we meet Hope who moved to the small town of Oceanside, Washington for a fresh start after her twin, and only surviving family member died serving our country. Cade is a military veteran who got into a bar fight and was sentenced to community service, physical therapy and counseling to change his life for the better. Through the book we see Cade grow as a human and deal with the demons of his past. During his community service at the dog shelter he meets Hope and a bond soon forms. They have their ups and downs but their story is truly beautiful.
The is a secondary story of the book that was interesting and drove Cade and Hope together and I think that was the main reason for the story about the high schoolers.
Overall if you are needing a light read that will have you smiling please grab this book. I want to say thank you to Netgalley and Debbie Macomber for proving me with a free digital copy in exchange for my review. I also want to say thank you to @prhaudio for the free audiobook.
The narrator Therese Plummer was great. The story and her voice kept me engaged and excited in the story while I followed along with my digital copy.
The best Is Yet to Come by Debbie Macomber is definitely one of her best! Debbie's writing never fails to soothe my soul and infuse me with hope. Speaking of hope, Hope Goodwin needs a new beginning and looks to find that in Oceanside WA. Starting a new job and volunteering at the animal shelter Is a good start. Hope meets Shadow, a rescue dog that seems hopeless to everyone but Hope. And then she meets Cade, another volunteer other volunteer who seems to be suffering as much as Shadow. Can Hope earn the trust of both shadow and Cade? Can Cade earn Hope's trust? And will all of them get the new beginnings they so deserve? You'll love this charming story set in a charming town, One of her best written by one of the best, Debbie Macomber ❤️

Third in the Oceanside Series, this book can standalone with its touching story and setting of beautiful Oceanside, Washington. Debbie Macomber's books always satisfy readers looking for the warmth of clean romances, along with meaningful themes and special characters. I quickly became engrossed in this story of two people living with damaged hearts, who are brought together with the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
The death of her twin brother led Hope to her new community of Oceanside, where she teaches high school and counsels students. Cade is an ex-Marine carrying the wounds of war. The two begin volunteering at a local animal shelter and bond through a special dog Shadow, who needs people in his life to trust.
I'm drawn to stories of men and women who show courage at turning points in their lives, taking steps to find happiness, healing, and love. I'm happy to have met and known Hope, Cade, and dog Shadow, while enjoying a side story of happenings at Hope's high school. I certainly look forward to reading the two earlier books in the Oceanside series this summer.
