Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an early excerpt of this book.
P.C. Cast is a queen of paranormal romance from the early 2010's, so revisiting their writing in 2022 definitely felt like a throwback. I only got to read to the beginnings of the magical aspect, but this is definitely a women-centered book, and I love that our lead in is with women teachers.
They deserve to be protagonists!
This read more dystopian than paranormal, and it brought me back to my early YA age of reading. I feel like this new P.C. Cast series is going to be for the thriller and dystopian fans. Cast's writing reads a little young for me, which surprised me considering this is an adult horror. I think if you enjoy a romp with some gore, this book will be for you.
Catching up on reviews so... Thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books, The Quick Brown Fox and Co. for access to this excerpt in exchange for my honest review.
Since this was only an excerpt I can only say how I felt about what little I was able to read and so far it hasn't really caught my attention, which is unfortunate because I was interested based on the description. Perhaps my thoughts will change when reading the full book but I don't know if I will get around to that based on what I read here. The writing seems immature, or intended for YA, so much so that I didn't want to keep reading. Perhaps I'm not the audience for this book and others will enjoy it but it is so far not a book for me, and in a way I'm glad I was only able to read an excerpt.
Even though this is just an excerpt, it gives you a great idea of what this will be all about. I enjoyed it!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review.
An interesting premise and gorgeous cover art, and that's about all I can say that is positive. A green mist kills most men, but gives women Dungeons and Dragons-eqsue special powers. This should have been right up my alley, especially since the focal characters are teachers in Oregon and is described as a feminist dystopian thriller. Let me be clear, this is the furthest thing from feminist, it's just a male-punishment fantasy. Equality cannot come about by mimicking our oppressors. And for a book with the premise of "all men are dying," there's an embarrassing lack of LGBT representation. I will not be recommending this book to anyone, unfortunately.
Thanks for the excerpt! The first few chapters of this book book you in immediately. Such a wild ride and so reminiscent of the HoN books :)
Definitely looking forward to reading the rest of this book based on these first two chapters! This teaser just wasn’t enough. I’ve always enjoyed P.C. Cast novels and I’m sure this one won’t be any different. Thanks to NetGalley for this teaser and adding another title to my TBR.
I'm excited to read more of this story, this was a great intro to the world Cast is creating. Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the excerpt!
I definitely wanted to read the rest of this book - and was so thrilled to receive the audio.
The humor caught me off guard - I expected the tone to more dismal. Their world just collapsed around them, creating massive chaos with few resources.
Great beginning to a great book.
Teachers on their way back home from a conference see the city explode before them, and a green mist float up and kill all the men in their group. Not knowing where to go or what to do, they head back to the lodge they were just staying in. It is there they find out some of the women that where touched by the mist now have special abilities. One of which is Stella, whose gut instinct ability is hugely heightened, now knows they must leave and leave soon before the big snow fall comes and they would take anyone who wanted to go with them. That left them a rag tag group heading east.
This was a great book and I had the awesome audio-book narrated by Lorelei King, who does awesome voices for each character in the book. The story itself is will pull at all your emotions as the group travels east. It is actually hard to believe that they make it as far as they did in this (I hope) the first book still being sane. I can’t wait to see what happens next to our group
I can't really judge this book based simply on an excerpt- which I didn't realize was what I was getting rather than the full length version. I'd not read the earlier books so I suppose, well, I'm not the right reader. Thanks to Netgalley for the excerpt.
I was looking for something similar to other Cast books. This was not it. Women embued with super powers is too cliched for me.
This was only a brief introduction of the book. I need more before I can make a final decision in regards to the rating.
I will give it a 3 for now.
I have read an ARC excerpt from the book. It focuses on the first two, although short, chapters of this book. After reading this excerpt and the description of the book, I cannot wait to read more! The concept is really intriguing and I feel like it'll be a really interesting read.
Thank you to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for the ARC excerpt.
I will definitely be picking up the full version when it comes out.
This was just an "excerpt" so it wasn't the entire book of Into The Mist by PC Cast. I did add my name to my library to read the entire book. Thank you to Netgalley for the excerpt and finding a new author!
This was an interesting concept, and my first thought was that it sounded like Stephen King's "The Mist". Once I started reading; I figured out that it was anything but. I did not like the writing or the world created. I will not pick up the final book.
This made me want to read this one so bad. I could not wait. More to come in the feedback for the whole book.
This was totally unbelievable, even for a fantasy/sci-fi type book. It was over the top and from what I have seen only goes on to be transphobic and feature a gang rape scene later on in the book as well, meaning it doesn't get better.
This was....not believable. Green balls of fire descend upon Portland, and her first thought is that it reminds her vaguely of the Wizard of Oz. I gave it an extra star because the beginning page was much better than everything that happened after the great balls of fire.
I remember reading the House Of Night books when I was younger and just seeing her name again gives me tremendous nostalgia.
It's hard to judge a book by its first two (very short) chapters. All we know is that there's a group of people and a big green explosion. The description actually tells you more than the excerpt.
One positive aspect is that the action starts right away. It throws me off when I'm reading sci-fi/fantasy and have to wait 30+ pages for the plot to get going.
One thing I didn't love was the dialogue. It lacks subtlety, and the characters sound more like teenagers than 30/40-year-old teachers.
But overall, I think I'll give it a chance once it's out or when there's a complete ARC!
I read an excerpt of the book, which begins with a teacher's summer trip and an explosion.
Can wait to read more.
