I’m a sucker for Nordic icy thrillers that leave me in hauntingly somber thoughts for atleast a few days and that is exactly what Cold Fear is about. It is everything I expect to read in sophisticated, gritty, and smart storytelling.
On a cold Sunday morning, a young woman’s body is discovered underneath a frozen pond in the relatively crime-free Iceland. Detective Krista Kristjánsdóttir has a killer instinct for foul play involved, especially when the body suddenly disappears. At the same time, deadly Navy Seal, Finn, is out in Iceland to get some answers from his former teammates who hold a key to his past that he can’t remember. Hunted by a deranged contract killer and embroiled in a dark murder investigation, Finn must step lightly on thin ice, lest he make a fatal mistake.
Brandon Webb and John David Mann make a killer dynamic duo when it comes to writing as one unified form. The elegance with which the chapters flow is commendable to say the least. Rarely have I read a narrative that juggles this many different POVs so interestingly. There are no fillers in this thriller. From the investigative angle of Krista to the personal vendetta spotlight on Finn, the story progresses swiftly and smartly. Pay attention to the dialogues; a lot of key details are conveyed that help you crack the case as you marvel at Finn’s ingenuity to connect the dots through a haze of information, a trait remarkably similar to Jack Reacher’s high functioning reasoning mind with a new flavor.
I wasn’t sure about whether to expect action, but I needn’t have worried. Finn faces off against a vicious SEAL-turned-contract killer in brutal and aggressive action sequences. Shootouts, creative weaponry, and straight up no-holds barred hand to hand combat explode in a volcanic fury of emotions.
I quite enjoyed Iceland as described in Cold Fear. Reading through the descriptions invoke each and every scene vividly in your mind so much so that you can feel the chilly breezes on your face. It’s evident the authors paid a great deal of attention to making the chilly Iceland a living breathing character as opposed to a simple backdrop for the story. The historical tidbits conveyed enthusiastically through energetic dialogues stay with you and compel you to add Iceland to your vacation list, minus the whole murder part.
Cold Fear is a remarkable blend of action and police procedural that highlights its characters and their distinctive personalities as they go about their own ways to crack the case, both with brain and brawn.

My goodness! The suspense, the mystery, everything about this book was good, and much improved over the first book, which I enjoyed also. This one is steps above in the writing and characterization, and much more organized than the first book, which I had some trouble with, good but confusing. This was so good! I highly recommend and look forward to the next!
A woman who is found under the ice who seems to have deliberately drowned herself and whose body disappears on the way to the morgue. A Navy Seal running to try and find what happened on a night in Yemen, he has been accused of a crime and wants to clear his name. This is set in Iceland. The mystery starts from the first page and will keep you guessing. There are multiple story lines, are they connected, read and find out. This is the 2nd book in a series but could be read as a stand alone. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
The action takes place in Iceland with hots springs and extreme cold. Finn is an excellent sniper and running from his past as a Neal Seal. He is finding the memories of his past terror and became lost. A young woman is killed in an Iceland icy pond and Finn has seen when the woman is running to the pond. The plot develops a number of different dangerous and mysterious to affect actions hitting him. Once you are beginning this story you won't be able to stop. Other characters are concerned with their past, and he is new relationships both and good and bad. As the beautiful environment of Iceland works into the issues of Finn, the excitement builds higher and higher. The end will be breath-taking. I recommend this book..
This is a well written, very intense story. The character, Finn, drew on my empathy right away. This is a stand-alone tale, but this magnetic character made me wish I had read the previous book! There are twists and turns making this one of those hard to put down reads. (I hope Finn meets up with Olga again one day. I want to know more about who she really is.) This author team knows how to create tension and drama.
I did figure out the particular mystery with the young female victim, but it took me nearly to the disclosure point. I love that kind of challenge in a thriller.
I lean more toward Christian fiction these days but putting some language aside this is a very good read. I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for my advanced reader's copy of the book. This is my own personal reaction to the series and this particular story. I will definitely read more of Finn Thrillers.
Cold Fear could soon a real possibility in today’s world. It struck a nerve with me, with all the spying, conniving and killing of various government officials.
Brandon Webb and John David Mann have done an excellent job making me more paranoid.
The sophomore novel by a high octane thriller writing duo. The new series continues the saga. I land is the setting and the thrills much like Flynn and Thor are chilling. Fun thriller book.
This crime thriller weaves a nice collection of threads: beginning with the death of a young women who appears to deliberately drown herself in an Iceland lake. The police are stumped as the bodies pile up, thanks to a motley collection of American special forces who appear to be operating for some unknown collection of bad guys. The plot twists and turns, helped on by a slew of modern topics such as Bitcoin mining, cellphone tracking, and Google translate. By the end of the novel, you will have a hankering for some nice rye bread spread thickly with lava salt and some smoked fish. The characters jump from the page, the situations seem realistic and if you are a fan of this genre you will enjoy the whole package. Highly recommended.
Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for the eARC.
This is a great book, it kept me on the edge of my seat. Also, the setting of Iceland and the Icelandic characters added so much to the read, I loved it!
I enjoyed the first in the series, but this follow-up even more so.
Finn, a former Navy Seal, AWOL, on his own, with his memory still foggy, is being hunted by a
Seal as well as trying to catch up to 3 Navy Seals, who will probanly be able to tell him what happened in Yemen so he can clear his name and conscience. Also, in Reykjavik, a girl has drowned and the police saw Finn on a nearby camera and he is now a suspect. As if things couldn't get worse, I felt so bad for Finn!
Hard to put down, this is a terrific book, can't wait for no. 3 in the series and I highly recommend it!
Finn is haunted by his lack of memory when it comes to one night in his past. He has flashbacks of what he thinks happened but has no idea if those depict a true memory or not. He’s a wanted man with no memory of what happened or who killed his friend, Lieutenant Kennedy. He finds himself in Iceland, on the trail of 3 other SEALS, men he believes hold the answer to his missing memories. Following Finn, with orders to take him out, is a very scary individual. Boone has been told to eliminate Finn and keep him from finding out who killed Kennedy. In the middle of all this is an investigation into a drowned girl who was found under the ice. How is she connected and why does Finn feel so engaged in learning who killed her. These multiple storylines all come together so well, with the tension mounting slowly, keeping the reader engrossed.
Cold Fear is the sequel to Steel Fear and doesn’t disappoint! While you can read this without having read Steel Fear, I think it adds to a richer reading experience to have met Finn in the first book. I look forward to more from Brandon Webb and John David Mann. Highly recommended! Many thanks to the authors, publisher, and NetGalley for a chance to review this novel!
Mystery, suspense and excitement keep you turning pages. As a continuation of the story this was every bit as good as the first one..
This book was great, the characters were well developed. The plot was interesting. Highly recommend it.
Interesting plot development. This book is hard to put down once you start it. Surprising ending. Don't miss it.
Finn is in Iceland looking for a couple of former SEAL team members, to try and fill in the blank spaces in his memory about a previous mission gone bad. He is on the run from those who believe he betrayed his team, as well as those who framed him. While there, he inadvertently witnesses something that pulls him to investigate a suspicious death. Clues are sparse, he is trying to move under the radar and it seems someone is after him. The writing was so well done that even the descriptions felt like part of the plot. I was immersed in the atmosphere of the location while also absorbed in the action and vested in Finn's situation. Finn is a fascinating character. We know something of his history and circumstance but he still seems somewhat mysterious as well as complex. As a former SEAL, he is capable of detached logic, even in a crisis situation and is further blessed with an excellent memory for details, all of which makes him an able investigator . It's a pleasure to watch him work. I love this series..
The literary equivalent of a popcorn movie, and I mean that in the best possible way. Fun, escapist, non-stop action with great characters and I love the Iceland setting.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an e ARC of this book.
Book two of the Finn series, it continues the saga in Iceland. Truly a thriller that grabs you and doesn't let go. Gives enough backstory for it all to make sense and sets up the next book. Likeable main characters. Old fashioned espionage. Great story.
Finn is a disgraced Navy SEAL. He wants to track down members of his team who have been sent to Iceland. He is accused of war crimes in Yemen and has a lot of questions. A contract killer does not want him to find the answers. For those who love mysteries and military books this is a great one. The authors did a marvelous job of developing the Islandic characters and there was action on every page. Just as exciting was the Middle East combat events. I gained so much knowledge of the Islandic history. This is a great book and a real page turner.
Another really excellent book by these two authors. The complicated story of hitmen chasing each other. Very clever, well-put-together story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I did the first. I received a free ARC for an honest review of this book. I highly recommend it!!
Cold Steel was my first encounter with Finn. I decided I was impressed enough to jump on the chance of reading this next book when offered as his continued search of what happened when as a special ops SEAL whose basic team had been set up by a SEAL team involved in more then a farm house massacre war crime He became a future fugitive after his commander & person he was closest to had been killed & that covered up & he had been stuck on a huge Navy carrier to come back to brigg or worse as a fall guy. While on the carrier he helped solve a murder or more then escaped before docking in San Diego to be killed/arrested. These are incredible thrillers that keep you going & also touch heavy on special ops & when the players can go sideways dirty usually with drugs, arms &money. The government is more than willing to cover up their atrocities than deal with the scandal as has been proven in real life like the SEALs that murdered a Special Ops Army man probably in a drug/money scam. It was sugarcoated then rationalized in a manner many couldn't even believe. Not a hazing prank. This incident for Finn is only in choppy backflashes in his mind in the aftermath carnage he is sitting near instead of being able to remember what all happened. A whole farm group of Yemini families. One had witnessed some SEALs murdering an American journalist to cover up other criminal things they were involved in & cam back & butchered them all. Still he searches for some in the bad group & for answers now in the far reaches of Iceland where he has a tip three have been sent for a black ops assassination. This time poor Finn is not so invisible & alarmed over how fast & how suspicious those in authority are watching him while he tries to stealth around. The players here are more astute & the stakes much higher than ever before. Finn is no longer feeling so on top of things. Main question is can he manage to live long enough to find out who murdered his commander & next person up willing to cover up everything.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of this book.
I loved Steel Fear and was looking forward to the next book. This one is even better! Although complicated with the various people and plots involved, it still seemed easier to follow. Finn is another type of Reacher. He doesn't seem to have a home, travels light, and, for the most part, has integrity.
Steel Fear ended with the USS Lincoln chugging into San Diego and perhaps Finn would be absolved of false accussations or, more likely, people were still going to try and kill him. Cold Fear opens with Finn having disappeared before the Lincoln pulls into San Diego and we are all in Reykyvek, Iceland. Finn becomes obsessed with a death that is either a suicide, a murder, or a bizarred accident. He can't explain why but he needs to know the answer. Meanwhile, the killer that was hired to kill him in San Diego is determined to finish the job. He has followed Finn to Iceland and a game of cat and mouse takes up the second half of the book.
I can't really tell you why I enjoyed this book so much. It is very well written and very ithought provoking questions are asked both of Finn and, of course, the reader. It is always easier when the villan and the hero are so black and white to root for good. But it doesn't deter enjoyment at all. Don't we all wish there were more Finns in the world today.
