“The Book of Souls” is a paranormal journey across time. The protagonist, Jack Kelly, has his life turned upside down after an accident. Before the accident, Jack was happily married middle aged man with three children. After the accident, he awakes as his 13-year-old self. However, he remembers his adult life clearly. In addition, Jack is thrown as he discovers his 13-year-old self has survived a major fall and injury that was previously attributed to his brother, Brick. Somehow, not only has Jack been thrown back in time, but his past has also changed, leaving Jack reeling.
However, that’s not it. Jack has also developed the ability to read people’s minds, recall their pasts, smell their feelings and fears, and see and hear dead people, demons, ghosts, and shadowy creatures. As Jack tries to cope with what has happened with the hope of returning home to his own timeline, various characters are introduced to help him along. Jack’s story isn’t all about him, though. Instead, Jack has taken on the task of attempting to help a ghost he has discovered cross over, all with a little help from his friends.
The story is an interesting premise with a lot of possibilities. I was intrigued and excited to start this book and see where Jack’s journey took him. As the tale progresses and characters are introduced, chapters switch perspectives and timelines to give a full picture of the important characters and their histories. This helps to really develop the characters and engage the reader. I went along for the ride as the ghost’s history was revealed, and I cheered Jack on as he fought to help the ghost cross over.
That being said, Jack’s struggle to help a ghost cross over is fraught not only with resistance from the ghost, but also attacks from demons and shadowy creatures who feed off his fear. However, there is a big hole left in this book as to what is happening with these dark creatures, why Jack is involved, and what needs to be done. It is a mystery that, I am assuming, will be addressed in the second part of this duology when the book is released this Fall. I hope so at least, as my major issue with this book is the lack of information and resolution relative to this mystery.
The flow of the book was pretty good. I did, unfortunately, find that some areas dragged on, throwing me out of my immersion in the book. Despite this, I do believe that the multiple timelines and characters weaved together well, which seems it would be a difficult task. The book did answer some questions and resolved some of the storyline, but, as expected, it did end on a cliffhanger due to its position as the first book in a duology.
To the extent that my copy was an audiobook, I must say it was narrated well. The voices pulled you into each character without sounding false. The narrative flowed well and was well-performed.
Overall, I believe this book was pretty good. Could it have been flushed out a bit better? Yes. However, the story is interesting enough to engage me as a reader and leave me wanting to see where the story goes in the next book in the series. That being said, I won’t be obsessively waiting for the release of the next book, and I don’t think I’d be disappointed if I missed it. Essentially, this book was middle-of-the-road for me. Good enough to leave me curious, but not good enough to leave me on the edge of my seat. I do believe this book would be good for young adult readers, readers who enjoy ghost stories, and readers who are new to paranormal books. The book overall does flow pretty well and should engage these types of readers. Just make sure you are prepared to be left with a lot of questions at the cliffhanger ending.
This is a very well written book. The audiobook portrayed that writing amazingly. The plot was interesting and kept me intrigued. There were some loose ends that were never explained, but overall I really enjoyed this book. Rating it a 3.5 but rounding it up to 4!
Thank you NetGalley and publishers for providing the audiobook in exchange for a honest review.
A very interesting tale with a lot of twists and turns, you really need to pay attention at the start or it will be easy to lose track of what is happening, and is relevant to the rest of the story arc.
The intimacy of Jack’s character and first person writing style for various characters makes it easy to put yourself in their shoes and makes you want to understand what is happening to them.
It was a little erratic in terms of pace, the start is really fast paced trying to get as much information in as possible and then the second half is a lot slower paced. I think I would have preferred it to be more even.
It’s open ended so you need to wait for the next book which I will be keeping my eyes peeled for.
Somewhere between a 3 and a 4 (I think the weird pacing made me mark it down a little)
I found this to be an interesting book. You're left really wondering how everything will piece together.
My favorite part of this book is the duality of having a story told from the perspective of a young boy with these otherworldly experiences and then the perspective of an artist (adult) with a "taboo" whirlwind lifestyle and ultimately seeing how those worlds would combine. I also really liked the narrator of this book. I believe Welland's voice lent very well to this story.
My only "negative" is that the beginning of the book can be quite confusing. It takes a bit to really understand what's going on due to the number of characters, slight shifts in perspective, and the "odd" events unfolding. I don't think this book will be for everyone but if you're interested in a multiple perspective, head-scratching paranormal thriller, it's definitely an interesting one to explore.
The book starts with a killer potential. Post his accident Jack cannot make sense of which part of the world does he belong to - the world of the living OR of the Dead?
And thus begins his journey wandering in this place somewhere in between, with special powers that helps him help others...
I felt the 1st half of the book was jam packed with happening events and the world building aspect was great. Though things started to loosen up a bit later and as 1 by 1 he tries helping various souls, more often saving people from dying - and the 2nd half became a little monotonous.
🌩Ending Alert:🌩
This is the first book of the duology & has an incomplete end 🥴. So you can also wait till 2022 end for the next book- The book Demons □ and basically read them together... 🤗
I found the beginning of this book to be pretty action packed and interesting. Jack is a happily married man...and then he isn't. There are specters and tension...and then there is not. Then there is a young Jack who is psychic. At times the narration became interesting...and then it was not. Often it dragged and I lost complete interest. This was helped when I completely abandoned the audiobook and stuck with the print. Not completely, but better. I think the execution spent far too much time with over-explanation and scenes that could have been cut altogether.
The Book of Souls by Kevin Moore
Jack is a middle aged man who is married with 3 children. Jack gets news that his son has a rare illness and this is where Jack's life changes. Jack hits his head and goes in a coma which returns him to his 13 year old self. Jack sees shadows and all kinds of creepy stuff but he is confused he knows he is married but he is a teenager instead. Jack is connected to a ghost name Casper who is interesting character. I really was intrigued by Casper and his artwork. At times I was emotional sad for Casper and at other times I was a little creeped out by him.
I almost felt like you had to be high on drugs to really get into this book. It felt like a crazy acid trip where you see all kinds of things. In the story their was drugs use by Casper and one of the people he was drawing/painting died of an overdose as the story goes on she was famous. The story was good and a bit scary at times. I did enjoy Jacks supernatural powers that he had. I also thought that Casper using his own blood in his art work was a bit creepy but also different.
I would recommend this book to people who like supernatural horror. I rated this book a 3.5 stars. At the end you find out that their is a Second book call the Book of Demons and I plan on reading it when it comes out to find out what happens with Jack.
Thank you to Netgalley and Kevin Moore for a free copy of the book for an honest review.
From the first page, I was intrigued.
It started off with really creepy vibes. I felt for Jack as he continued life after waking up from a coma. Everyone around him told him he was only 13 years old and the family he remembers so vividly was a result from the injury he received after falling in an abandoned building.
The story itself kept me interested throughout the whole book. I did not hear any issues with narration and found the narrator easy/enjoyable to listen to. I am interested in continuing the story when the next book comes out in fall of 22.
This book was received for free in return for an honest review
Jack is happily married with three kids who suddenly wakes up as his thirteen-year-old self in the hospital. He can't understand what has happened. He keeps asking for his wife and children and his doctors and father attribute this to the head injuries he suffered when he fell playing in an abandoned building. He is told he has an injury to his brain, and therefore he believes he is a married man with kids.
So maybe with time he can buy that, but what about seeing dead people (this is no sixth sense) and evil demons. Then there is Apartment 3C. It is across from his classroom and the resident appears to be staring at him.
The premise of this book was intriguing, but the execution did not work for me. Neither did the narrator. There were parts that I found to be very interesting, and I was fully engaged, then there were parts that dragged, and I lost interest. This is the first book in a series, and I will not be reading the rest.
Others have been captivated by this book, so please read their reviews as well.
2.5 stars
Thank you to Books Fluent and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
This story follows Jack Kelly as he tries to navigate through multiple traumatic experiences in his life. I listened to the audiobook version of this story. I really liked the narrator. Their inflection and cadence was on point. This story have multiple POV's in it. The prologue really grabs a hold of the reader but after that I felt it was difficult to follow the story line. The time jumps made, caused me to have to go back and re-listen to chapters and see where I missed a key detail and in most of those cases I did not. The jumping back and forth felt like it gave my whiplash. This is just how I feel about the book and it may not be the feelings or thoughts of others. I feel that the story has a great premise to it but it was confusing and lacking a little for me.
A terrific audiobook well written the author does a good job of intertwining the threads together kept me entertained throughout. Luke Welland does a thoroughly good narration.
I received this audiobook from Books Fluent via Netgalley for a review.
“The Book of Souls” is an intriguing and descriptive tale with interesting twists throughout. I enjoy the authors writing style, the complexity to the storyline, and was one I could not put down.
I anxiously await “The Book of Demons"!
A sincere thank you to NetGalley and Books Fluent for providing me an advance copy (ARC) of the audiobook “The Book of Souls” in exchange for an honest review. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to listen to this story and leave my review voluntarily.
Jack Kelly is a thirteen-year-old boy who has a tragic accident in an abandoned building that leaves him clinically dead. While in the in-between state of life and death, Jack lives life to over forty years old with a wife and three children. Jack loves his wife and children dearly, which is why he finds it so hard to leave them to deal with the consequences of living in the in-between.
The Book of Soul contains ghosts, demons, shadow creatures, and many questionable moral acts. Trigger Warning!!! There is also talk of suicide and infidelity.
I was enamored with this book from the very first page. The fear factor was ever-present, and I never knew what was going to happen next. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the book! Toward the end of the book, I was brought to tears by the author's depiction of struggles with mental illness and loss of direction in life. His descriptions of the character's thoughts and emotions after death made the concept of hauntings not quite so terrifying. I appreciated the ending to this story, and it was a nice setup for the second book in the duology. I am looking forward to the continuation of Jack Kelly's story!
This was a really great audiobook that kept my attention and had me thinking about it when I wasn't listening to it. I love how the stories intertwine and I really love the descriptions of the artwork. It made me want to see the duality paintings in real life. Looking forward to more!
This book was very interesting, but there were definitely lots of loose threads that were never explained or things that seemed like they would be important but then weren't. Overall, a decent story though.
This was a very interesting read
What I liked:
+ interesting premise and once the story started going, it stayed interesting
+ it was interesting and weird but there was some humor woven in there that made the story telling more fun
What I didn't like:
- In the very beginning, it felt very tell not show. I understand that in the beginning, the characters were very confused but I think more show not tell would have painted a more interesting picture and would have done a better job at grabbing the reader's attention. It definitely not better because I think there was a lot more show not tell throughout the story.
- This might be the audiobook but I found it a little confusing when it would go from first person to third person
- I understand that there will be more books but I think some things that were brought up in this book felt kind of random or I just don't see the importance of it (like info on the nun's body???) I'm not sure if these will be picked up in the next book?
Overall, I thought this was interesting and weird (in a mostly fun way). I will definitely be picking up the next book.
First of all, I didn’t realise this was the authors FIRST released novel until the end of the audible and I presumed they have written many more great novels before this one because of how natural and well written this one is.
The author captures spooky/horror perfectly and describes just enough for your mind to really grasp what the world and the souls look like.
Book cover wise, I would really invest in upgrading it and spending more money on someone who can really bring it to life because it does not do the novel justice. I know we say ‘don’t judge a book by a cover’ (which this book is evidence on why we shouldn’t) but we sadly do.
For the audible, the reader has a clear and crisp voice. Although I did chuckle to myself at the beginning with the little tune after each statement but it was a good chuckle. I liked the music and it really set the tone going in. It suited the story well and got us prepared. One thing though, he didn’t say “twat” correctly (says it more “tawe”). Very American way of saying it. I’ve also never heard an American say “twat” either despite this novel being set in the US? But maybe I’m wrong.
The story is serious but it does have humorous moments which I also enjoyed. It really got me to bond with the characters more. I loved Jack and he wasn’t an annoying main character. You really start to feel from him before chapter two which is rare. Although at the beginning his is older and he clearly still shares those older qualities when he’s 14, you also see how the author naturally starts writing him as a 14 year old and at time you see his age show through. It’s done naturally and progressively though which is nice. It really makes it realistic.
My favourite soul is the horse head with a tail that gets swung in the beginning. Such a menace little thing, but also funny scenario to imagine.
One minute I was on chapter two and then next it was 10 and so on. It’s so easy to just listen to and follow along. You also WANT to pick up your device and listen to some more. I’m looking forward to book two and hearing more stories about the souls and also that old man he’s helped.
I was also an anxious child too so I related a lot to Jack on that aspect. One thing he said was “fear is not living” and I will carry that with me from now on, thanks Jack!
I see a very successful career for this writer and I look forward to reading more of his work :). Highly recommend!

Nothing we haven't seen already. I would have enjoyed it more if it had taken out a bunch of the boring life things in exchange for more horror. This just tended to drag and the audiobook reader wasn't good. I can't see how this could be a series. Overall, the book was very generic and not attention-grabbing.
This is my Kevin Moore first book that I've read and I can now say I am hooked. His weaving style of present and past is genius. Moore has not only made me feel like a character in his work, but has also left my mind spinning and yet wanting more. This is a must read or listen to book!
Book of Souls by Kevin Moore follows the character Jack who has a near death experience after an accident. While, he is fighting for his life, Jack has a vivid dream of a wife and kids that seems to play out of the course of a few weeks to months. When he awakens he finds himself in the hospital and inside a 13 year old's body.
Jack tells his father and doctors about his wife and kids, however no one believes him since he is a 13 year old boy. Everyone believes it is a direct link to his accident and the trauma he suffered because of the accident, but Jack believes his wife and kids were real.
Jack begins to experience things that cannot be explained by normal standards. He is introduced to others who are kind of like him in different ways and they teach him how to better harness his new abilities. Jack can seemingly sense things about people, specifically private things that he would never know about, he can see the shadows and ghosts and commune with them.
In learning about his abilities he meets Peter who is not the person he was expecting to meet in the apartment across the street from his Catholic school. Jack is trying to figure out what is going on in Peter's apartment and why he thought someone else lived there.
Does Jack really have a wife and kids somewhere? Was it all a dream? How can he get back to them? Who is the mysterious person Jack sees in Peter's apartment and what does this person want?
I listened to this book in audio form. The voice actor, Luke Welland, for the book was good. He has a pleasant voice and is nice and level with his voice, which makes it easy on the ears. I do wish there was a little more emotion during some of the parts of the book with Mr. Welland, but overall I really enjoyed listening to him narrate the book.
The Book of Souls is well thought out and weaves a fairly complicated web of reality mixed with the supernatural. I like the writing style of the book, the style really comes through in the narration and gives you the feeling of suspense for most of the book as Jack is trying to figure out the shadows, the mystery person, and what is happening to himself. It is interesting to hear about the different kinds of abilities Jack learns to use and it is interesting to hear how he uses these new abilities of his.
I also like that we do get outside perspectives of what other characters in the book see when Jack is using his abilities and how people can misconstrue or become fearful of the things they do not understand.
For me the overall feel of the book was suspenseful and mysterious. I could figure out some of things that were going on, but I did not figure all of it out. Which I really love it when I cannot figure everything out in a book.
The book does jump back and forth between characters and I know for some people going back and forth between characters can become confusing. If you are one of those people do not let that discourage you from reading or listening to the book. It will all come together and make perfect sense in the end.
I do recommend if you are going to listen to the audiobook that you pay close attention because there are details throughout the book that matter to the conclusion of this book.
The Book of Souls did not bore me and it kept my attention the whole time because I constantly wanted to know what was going on and how it was going to play out. This book is worth the read or the listen and I am excited and highly anticipate the next book.
