Jack is happily married with kids. But when one of his children becomes ill, shadows come out of nowhere & Jack steps in to save his child. Now he has woken up in his teenage self & the life he loved is gone & the past he knew has changed. Jack must now over come an injury & deal with the fact he can now see ghosts & no-one believes him or wants him to talk about it. With his new ability he is drawn to a neighbour of his school & tries to help him before he is sent insane.
The beginning of this was so familiar, but I cannot place what it reminded me off, I know some others have referred to the movie Sixth Sense, the only connection is about a boy who can see ghosts. It started of well & had some intriguing parts through out. I like how the author used his own experiences with meditation & lucid dreaming in the story. I enjoyed the parts where through Jacks ability he could pick up secrets of those around them. This helped give these characters a bit more interest. Sadly just did not connect to it. I found some parts dragged & wished the horror had been a little more scary & the closest it got to the end the quicker the jumps where between characters which became a bit disjointed. This is the first part of a duology.
I listened to the audiobook version & found the narrator Luke Welland did a great job bringing this to life.
I received a digital ARC from Books Fluent through NetGalley.
This was an easy 4 star rating for me. I was hooked from the very beginning. The author does a great job of unraveling the layers of the story and keeping you on your toes while he does it. I found myself invested in each character in the story whether I liked them or not. This books straddles the line of your typical thriller and paranormal/supernatural story. It all felt very real to me.
Special Thanks to Books Fluent and NetGalley for this dark tale. An ARC for a review? I’ll take it!
*disclaimer*
I am a reader. Not a writer. So keep your expectations low here.
Let’s get the trigger warnings out of the way: Death. Violence. Suicide. Addiction. The Occult. Self Harm. Nuns (some people find them scary) Okay…that’s enough. It’s a horror book…so use your imagination.
I spent the couple chapters of this book with a puzzled look on my face. Thanks for the wrinkles Kevin Moore. Thankfully the pieces fell into place for me almost a quarter way through.
I dug the dual timelines as well as the characters whose lives they followed. Jack Kelly’s storyline could have gotten derailed into cheese land so many times, but it managed to stay authentic and believable. Even when waking up from a coma as his younger self, or fighting demons…I was in it the whole time.
Casper Greenstreet and his life (and death) was just as captivating. As an artist, I loved his wild creative process and found his voice really fascinating. Again, things could have unraveled so many times but Moore did a great job navigating even the toughest of scenarios.
The only time I did a double take was when we find out about the Nun’s hidden deformity. I found my uncontrollable visual comparison to Total Recall a bit distracting. 🤦♀️😆
I’m a sucker for great characters who are fully developed and this book had them. And as their stories continued to intertwine, so did the suspense. I was hard pressed to put this book down right up to end. Well played Mr. Moore. And of course, well read Luke Welland.
I’m glad to know the story will continue, I’ll be looking for book 2t.
First as always thank you netgalley and author for this arc. This book pleasantly surprised me I listened as an audio book in one sitting I literally couldn’t stop listening I started while working on a project and stopped working and solely listened it was that good. I really recommend if you’re looking for a captivating read. It’s amazing from prologue to end. As an audio I really recommend because reading the book the writing seems like it would be a little simple but listening it was perfect and understandable and great for youth and adults. Jack Kelly I really loved his character absolutely amazing his journey was amazing and heartbreaking in the best ways. I’m begging you to read this book.
Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this audiobook.
Very eerie in SUCH a good way. It seems to jump right in at the beginning, then slows down but the action at the end makes up for it. There were a few times when listening that I didn't notice a change in perspective so that got a little confusing but overall this was well written, and I will definitely be looking into the sequel. Narrator did a great job as well.
This was a super dark paranormal story with some great twists! I love anything paranormal and this didn’t shy away from ghosty action!!
I thought the stories that were told within the book were really beautiful and so nice to read and see it all tie together. The concept of the book was also lovely, with the main character learning about troubled souls he’s found and helping them.
I thought the writing was good and the narrator was pretty good too. The chapter length towards the end was much easier to get through, but there were some longer ones to begin with and it felt a bit slow-burn in places, despite jumping straight into the action.
Definitely a great debut book by this author and I would recommend to any fans of ghosty books and paranormal!
This books is really well written and the story was good from an objective standpoint. From my personal standpoint I’m not the right reader for this story.
