I've been a fan of Colton Haynes since I watched Teen Wolf, and I don't normally read memoirs, but I loved this one. Though it deals with many heavy topics, and it's important to read trigger warnings, this is an important book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I sped through Miss Memory Lane. I laughed, I teared up, I wanted to smash things and people.
If you only read one memoir this year, make it this one.

I only knew of the author via Teen Wolf and Arrow, but I am thankful to have read this memoir based on his life so far. Certain parts of the book were difficult at times and reading about his experiences (and abuses) reached a part of me that I knew wanted to reach back and comfort him. The publication of this book, which I hope has retained the haunting portrait of Haynes on the front, tells the story of a young man who fought for his dreams every step of the way despite the hardships and mental illness that stood in the way. It’s weird to say this about someone I have never met and probably will never have the chance to, but I’m immensely proud of his bravery and brevity in telling his story when so many in our age range feel like they have to suffer silently. This was a heart-wrenching, beautiful narrative that I can honestly commend for its storytelling and memory.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book.
I did find this hard to read because of how heavy the subject matter was, It was written beautifully, but what was shared was so hard to digest at times. I have been a Colton fan since I first saw him on Teen Wolf, and to hear in his own words just how hard getting to that point was broke me. I think by sharing his experiences, Colton has laid it all out for others to possibly judge him harsher than they do. That being said, his bravery in sharing everything so honestly could be a tool to helping others relating and seeing their own trauma and how it changed them.

I fell in love with Colton Haynes when he was on Teen Wolf, so I was really excited to read this book! I loved getting to hear about his Teen Wolf days and other acting experiences and was blown away by his vulnerability when sharing about his personal life. This book covers a LOT of heavy topics (addiction, eating disorders, parental death, sexual assault, etc.) in a very approachable way.

For me memoirs especially from famous people can be hit or miss. This one I was worried about because I love Colton on Arrow, so I was unsure how I would see him after reading this. But I have to say that I think I love him a little more after understanding what he has gone through in his life outside of what I see on social media.
Additionally, I'm glad he wrote this since it helps to illuminate a lot of struggles that people have and go through on their own. I appreciate him bringing more awareness to the struggles that the went through.

While the media blitz has been all over Matthew Perry and his recovery memoir, another actor quietly released his earlier this year recounting his own struggles with addiction and identity.

Colton Haynes shot to teen dream stardom as one of the stars of MTV’s Teen Wolf which became a huge hit for the music network. But behind the glitz and instafame associated with the show, Haynes had already spent a childhood with an abusive, mostly absent father and a mother who seems like she went to the same parenting university as Jeanette McCurdy’s mom. Their corrosive complicated relationship both shaped who Haynes became and made for a a terribly tough web to untangle himself from. Additionally as a gay actor who was conditioned and told in no uncertain terms to butch it up and keep your private life private, Colton effectively lived in agony not being able to truly be himself.

This was a tough one to get through, both the horrible parenting as well as the seediness and dark underbelly of the entertainment business coming to hideous light. A sequence with a manager that also doubled as an acting teacher was pointedly horrific in sexual abuse these actors were put through. Haynes never wallows in self pity and blame and takes full responsibility for behavior and events that ultimately led to his entering rehab and I’m so glad he was able to find his way through the woods. But wow, the journey was incredibly sad to read/listen to.
Thanks to @atriabooks for the advance copy.

I really enjoyed this book. I did feel like it was more heavily focused on his childhood, and his career seemed to go really fast in the book after he made it to LA. However, it was a really easy, but also an interesting read. It's always fascinating to read about a well-known celebrities life and learn things you had no idea about. Colton went through so much to get to where he is right now, and as a fan, I am so proud of his development. The writing was really well-done and easy to read. I would highly recommend it to not only fans of him and his work, but anyone trying to get into non-fiction and biographies.

Those who have been fans of Colton Haynes since "Teen Wolf" will be surprised to learn that he is a very good writer, that his journey to the screen was not easy or without assault, nor was his journey to discovering himself. I felt that his ability to describe his emotions during those traumatic situations was such a triumph, It reminded me a lot of Emily Ratajowski's "My Body." I wonder what a panel with these two would be like!

Interesting and well written I just personally couldn’t get into the story. Just a little slow and unbelievable at some points. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

An honest debut memoir. Really enjoyed this one. I know Colton from "Teen Wolf" and had no idea about his personal life before diving into this. It takes guts to be this vulnerable. I hope it inspires and comforts a new generation of queer kids.

What a brave book for Colton to write. It gave me a new prespective of him.
Thank you so much to NetGalley for the ARC>

This was brutal and honest, but something that I will always remember reading. Miss Memory Lane was much more than I expected and I am very glad that I picked it up. It was not a typical name-dropper memoir about all the fun things actors get to experience due to their lifestyle - Colton got honest and gritty about how hard this life has been for him, and how he struggled to cope with all that life threw his way. I'll forever be a Colton Haynes fan and I'm very thankful to of had the opportunity to read this story. I was enthralled and consumed.

As one of my favorite actors Colton is honest, raw and stripped down in his writing. I am so honored to have been able to read this in advance of publication. He is a talent that is going to shine for years to come

Colton wrote a beautiful, heart breaking, and brutally honest memoir that is going to stick with me for a long, long time. I haven’t read very many memoirs before but I have been looking forward to reading this book since he announced it and wow, I am so glad I got my hands on it! I spent most of this book with tears rolling down my face but there’s a really long paragraph towards the end of the book that had me sobbing 😭 It’s honestly really hard to review a memoir because how do you judge how someone tells the story of their life? But all I can say is that I think everyone can benefit from reading Colton’s story! I think it’ll help people not only understand him and the way his life has unfolded but help people to have compassion for other humans in general! Getting to hear his story in his own words made me love him more than I already did and I honestly just look forward to being able to see everything he does in the future 💙

I'm not really a memoir person but this one was a decent enough read. Colton had a very all over the place story so it was interesting to learn about.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review.

Raw. Brutal. Not A Name-Dropping Hollywood Story. Like so many others, I first "met" Haynes when he showed up on my TV screen as Roy Harper in CW's Arrow. A show which I didn't want to like at first because it came *so* close to Smallville and Justin Hartley's own excellent portrayal of the same (now titular) character, but whose grit and realism shined through and made me a fan (at least of its earlier seasons). But I never knew too much of the actual Colton Haynes other than knowing that he seemed to be friends with his female cast mates in particular and that he had previously been on the MTV version of Teen Wolf.
And while both of these shows are mentioned here (with more details about Teen Wolf than Arrow, though not a Hollywood-gossip type entry on either of them), the focus of this book is more about Haynes' upbringing, from his earliest memories to his first sexual abuse at age six to his later sexual abuse throughout his teenage years, and his life as all of this was happening. Even when we get into the areas where he came into the public eye, beginning with modeling in New York and LA (after h

Miss Memory Lane by Colton Hayes a special thanks to Atria and NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
To say I was shocked reading this is an understatement. It’s so raw and emotional. Having watched Colton in a number of shows, Arrow, Teen Wolf and Scream Queens. I was curious about his memoir and what he had to say. He lays it all out for you. He explains how hard life was with addiction, eating issues and the loss of his mother. You could feel so much thru his worlds and self reflection. This one will stick with me. I would definitely add this to your TBR!

This is the first memoir I've read and reviewed. I've never been a fan of them since I typically prefer the escape that fiction provides. That said, I was drawn to this initially because I've watched Colton Haynes in Teen Wolf and Arrow. Once I read a synopsis of the battles he's fought in his life, there was no way I couldn't read this book.
First of all, I need to say if you have triggers, approach this one with caution. Colton's childhood was anything but traditional. He experienced abuse at an extremely young age and it set the tone for his life of self doubt and low self esteem. As an outsider, you look at him and acknowledge that he's stunningly attractive. Colton realized his appearance could get him things early on and used it in ways that were damaging to him even though he didn't understand that at the time. He became an easy target for exploitation.
The story is heartbreaking in many ways. It chronicles Colton's unhealthy relationship with his body and sexuality. Even though he realizes at a young age that he's gay, he's told to "go back in the closet" when he starts trying to get acting jobs. As time progresses, he's told to keep it quiet and that he shouldn't come out. Denying who he truly is damages Colton emotionally. He begins to rely heavily on drugs and alcohol to make it through the day.
Along with the challenges Hollywood brings, Colton is still dealing with ghosts from his past. Primarily, his relationship with his mother is one that he clearly regrets. I was impressed that he didn't hold back. Colton opens himself up and puts his pain and hurt in the pages of this book. He only brushes on his acting roles with the two tv series very briefly. So, if you want to read it for background information on either Teen Wolf or Arrow, you won't get that in this book. What you get is a frank and raw detail of Colton's pain. As tragic as his story is, it's also uplifting because he's identified his demons and he's now dealing with them. This book is definitely one way in which he can process his emotions and be open about how things impacted him. It's brave and I commend him for sharing of himself to this level. It's very eye-opening that being attractive can often be as much of a burden as a blessing - - sometimes more.
This is a five star read for me because I believe if anyone is willing to bare their soul to this level, they deserve it. In addition, it's a consuming read. You just can't believe the things he's lived through. Regardless of how difficult some of it can be to read, it was well worth it.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to read and review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
