This is a new author for me. I rather enjoyed her writing and creativity.
Earl of Hampton’s daughter, Lady Sara Elsmere, Is an entomologist who collected butterflies, A bluestocking and has a nervous laugh issue. she is fun, vivacious, and does not know it. Her passion she got from her mother but her family thinks she should abandon it. To her it honors that precious memory of her mother.
Ian McAllister, Duke of Dorchester, is proud, brooding, A cunning business man, and never wants to marry. He only has a few memories of his mother and hated his father. Now he has been given guardianship over his cousins boys and is trying to figure things out.
As these two have been found in a compromising situation they marry as part bargain part marriage of convenience. As they work out how best to deal with everything and the boys Sara starts to find having these men in her life make it richer in many ways. Ian struggles and is not liking what is happening.
Can they make a family? What obstacles do they overcome? How does her nervous laugh effect her dealing with Ian and the boys? What changes does the boys have on the marriage? What surprises does come about? Who does the surprising? You will laugh, and root for various people while you catch butterflies and roam the gardens.
thank you netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review!
this review has accidentally been deleted too many times for me to rewrite the entire thing again, so:
I liked it! the heroine and love interest felt like actual people with their own lives, interests and goals which isn't always the case in historical romances so that was nice! I liked that while they didn't love each other at the start, they respected each other at least.
the book flowed well, although it did turn a bit cooky at the end but it got resolved quickly and without much drama.
overall a very solid first historical romance arc! I would read another book from this series, I really would.
I Loved This! Never Marry a Scandalous Duke unfolds beautifully and will hold your attention from the moment you begin the journey with Sara and Ian until the very end! This is the sixth in The Infamous Lords series which brings the characters who found a place in your heart are back. Renee Ann Miller has written a story that's filled with characters with individual personalities that become more than just part of the tale they come off the pages and pull you into their tail, sizzling passion, wonderful back and forth witty banter and with a heartfelt plot that leaves you looking forward to the next in the series.
Be warned, when you start this book you will be completely and utterly emersed in the story line, unable to put the book aside till you finish reading. And then you will want to read it again. It is a great and captivating regency romance that will catch you off gurad and leave you yearning for more.
Not bad, but not exceedingly good either.
There were a few entertaining scenes but, for the most part, this was a very predictble light read. However, I did like the occupation our heroine had (very unique) as well as the quippy banter in the first half of the book.
(thank you netgalley for providing a free copy of the book in exchange for my honest opinion)
5 stars
Listen, sometimes you need a trope-filled, low-angst romance to fill the void.
We've got some classic historical romance tropes in Never Marry A Scandalous Duke - mistaken identity, marriage of convenience, single dad (technically guardian in this case), damaged hero, and bluestocking heroine to name a few. Add a little bit of banter and some pining on top of that and you have an absolutely delightful romance on your hands. I started this at around 11:30 at night and found myself staying up until almost 3 in the morning just to finish this. If that's not an endorsement, I don't know what is!
Thank you to NetGalley and Zebra for an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review!
I never read this author before i am glad i did, the cover looked very beautiful. I think it is why i wanted to read it hence the description about the book. I liked the relationship between Ian and Sara even though it was hard to like in the beginning they didnt think they could marry one another. He is a duke and a businessman. This book had a lot of good humor that made me laugh through it and it had steam. Thank you for letting me read it. Netgalley gave me the book to provide for my feedback.
Attempted murder and love that is the truth of the situation that requires assistance from the servants.
A stolen kiss at a ball and mistaken identities leads to a marriage of convenience in USA Today bestselling author Renee Ann Miller’s latest Infamous Lords novel. Featuring a spunky, scientist, spinster heroine and a deliciously dashing duke, readers can expect smoldering passion, engaging characters, and roguish antics set against the compelling backdrop of Victorian London.
This book by Renee Ann Miller. It is amazing.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC for an honest review.
Even though this is the 6th book in the Infamous Lords series, this is the first one I've read and I enjoyed not needing to read the others to understand this one.
First, I want to say how much I absolutely adored Sarah and Ian's story and their interactions together. I have gone back and re-read parts multiple times because I enjoy reading them so much.
After a case of mistaken identity and being in the wrong place at the right time, Sara and Ian must wed to avoid scandal. It was very enjoyable to see Sara come into her own as a duchess while staying true to herself and not losing parts of who she is and what she enjoys.
Ian is a rake who hides a broken heart behind an endless string of mistresses and had no intention of marrying until his kiss with Sara could potentially ruin a business deal. From there we see these two very independent people grow to love and accept each other.
Something that I thoroughly enjoyed is that while this book had many opportunities for the misunderstanding trope, it did not go that route and seeing them work through problems that they had was refreshing to read.
Very charming story with some heat 🔥
Sara is a nerd. She is not interested in ballrooms, she prefers libraries (and butterflies). Unfortunately in one of them she has a pleasure (not) to bump into scandalous Duke. Fast-forward one year later, one ball, two same looking dresses, one confused Duke and the beginning of a cute love story begins.
This is marriage of convenience. A business deal. Loved every bit of it! It made me smile and giggle a lot.
I couldn't put it away simple because I wanted to know how exactly they will realize that they love each other. If that's not a good recommendation than I don't know what it...
It is an ideal comfort read which you won't regret.
Lady Sara Elsmere is far more interested in studying butterflies than society. Embarrassed at her debut and quickly avoided by men, there is only one frustrating man who unintentionally interests her: Ian McAllister, the Duke of Dorchester. Ian is happy with his bachelor life, but could use a hand with his two precocious wards. When Ian finds himself kissing the wrong woman at a costume ball, a marriage of convenience is the only solution.
This is the sixth book in the Infamous Lords series. Ian is the best friend and business partner of the hero from the novella, The Taming of Lord Scrooge, and Sara is best friends with book four heroine, Nina. This story can be read alone, but there are “winks” for series readers (like the appearance of Nina’s grandmother and the troublesome parrot).
This was a feel-good romance that felt a bit like a throwback. I liked that Sara and Ian had a couple of run-ins before their marriage. Sara was definitely interested, but she didn’t fawn over Ian like other society ladies. He came to appreciate her, and her intelligence. Their romance was slow-burn and organic. This is the kind of book that may not be the most memorable, but it was an enjoyable read that had me smiling throughout.

* I received an ARC and this is my honest review. #NeverMarryAScandalousDuke #NetGalley
This book was provided by Netgally, Zebra books and Kensington Books for an honest review. All of the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Things I LOVED in this book:
Sara, Ian, children (his wards Edward and Jacob (that made me giggle because, well twilight)), the staff, the rest of their friends, allllllll of them. The characters are all real feeling and you can clearly imagine them going about their day in this grand house. The slow building romance and friendship between Sara and Ian and her relationship with the boys is just so well done that it hooked me in and would not let me go.
Now for the things I didn't like(read hated):
Hmmmmm where to start. The main characters father and brother are severely lost in their own heads up their asses. Seriously, I'm talking : you should not educate women, must marry this year level of asshats, must wear what I say even if it is absolutely ridiculous and unflattering (while expecting the woman to attract attention). Oh and calling her handsome ENOUGH??? Go to hell pompous idiots.
To say that in two chapters I was definitely rooting for her to just tell them to ef off in the most spectacular way. Unfortunately father died before it could take place so I put all of my hope in brother getting an ear full. Which he sort of got from Ian but not really. They can just go yeet themselves back out the story.
Ian's father I HOPE IS BIRNING IN HELL.
The sister is a self absorbed little nitwit whose whole existence is being in the center of attention and being the THE DIAMOND AKA INCOMPARABLE OF THE SEASON. Wishing you sister sick so you can go to the party is despicable.
And let's not forget all of snide comments, manipulative and abusive things she kept saying to Sara all the time. I found myself saying :What a bitch when ever she opened her petty jealous mouth.
All in all I can safely say I HATE SARA'S FAMILY WITH ALL OF MY BODY, HEART AND SOUL. Sadly I think we are meant to hate them but still. I want to know why was it necessary to make them this horrible. Especially as your whole plot was about a scandalous kiss between the Duke and the "innocent spinster". They could have been a good family unit not this collection of idiots and Sara.
My final score was supposed to be 4 stars but the last minute crime drama angle of Isabel (former lover turned stepmother) and family solicitor Miles trying to kill Ian and Sara resqueing him with a bow and arrow that he taught her how to use pushed it to 5 stars. Brilliant move on the authors part.
I really liked this book! I loved the characters and the story, and it kept me hooked the entire time!
A super fun romantic romp. Will be interested in reading other titles by the author as they do romance so wonderfully
Hello! Never Marry a Scandalous Duke was awesome! I always have fun reading books by Renee Ann Miller. I love Ian's and Sara's story! I think it is a brilliant idea to have conceived of Sara's own backstory as that of an entomologist. And wonderful that Ian, a powerful Duke and shipping magnate of his time, supports his wife in her endeavors. I really enjoyed the romance that played out between Ian and Sara. I think it was superbly developed and done so at just the right pace and with just the perfect intensity. Major chemistry between the two and stronger and stronger the longer both were married. Sara is a lovely, confident heroine, and Ian is a Duke who, while having suffered a traumatic childhood, did not let that define him. He is a rogue and a hard man, to be sure, but it was great to see how he softened through the marriage of convenience. And the scenes of their dancing together... magical!! I highly recommend Never Marry a Scandalous Duke. Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced reader copy! :)
Okay i honestly judged this book by it's cover thinking it would be a bit dull but hopefully light read. However, the book was great. I flew through it in under a day and really enjoyed the plot and pacing of the book.
Thank you to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
The best part of this book was how close the two seem to get after getting to know each other. The intimacy of marriage, even to someone you don’t know all that well, is well on display here and it’s nice. The next best part of this book were the two young nephews, who were hilarious and delightful. Unfortunately I have very little else in this book to recommend. It was dry and Sara’s butterfly ambitions felt contrived and very surface level. The two didn’t have a lot of personality to offer, even Ian is very self assured and well adjusted. He’s aware of his traumas and how it affects people and actively works to makes things right. While that’s very nice and noble, it doesn’t make for a very good character arc. Neither of them really grow or change because they’re already practically perfect, they just fall in love. A fun read but not exactly what I was looking for.
Lady Sara Elsmere is a spinster through and through: thanks to her nervous laughter whenever gentlemen asked for a dance and her interest in the study of butterflies. She was quite convinced her life would be like that for the rest of her days, until she was caught in a compromising position with Ian McAllister, the Duke of Dorchester, in a case of mistaken identity. Now, the two have to marry for their own reasons: Sara, quite ironically, for freedom, and Ian for a business deal he does not want to lose. And as they begin a new chapter of their lives together, they may learn that their marriage will be more than just a convenience for them.
Never Marry a Scandalous Duke is the sixth book from Renee Ann Miller’s historical romance series, Infamous Lords. This one tells the story of Lady Sara Elsmere and Ian Mcallister. I wasn’t familiar with the author so I read this without any expectations. This was the sixth book in the series so I was worried I may not understand something but I think it stands quite well on its own. The book cover is ghastly but I think this was decent enough.
The heroine is a blue stocking entomologist who doesn’t want to marry. However, her brother was pushing her to marry or else he would cut off her funds which means she wouldn’t be able to continue her studies. The timing of her being compromised couldn’t be more perfect, although Sara objected to the idea at first, she soon realized the deal she’d have with the duke would be better than her allowance being under her brother’s control. Her family isn’t exactly cruel but they aren’t very supportive either, except for her late mother. With Ian, she gets to experience independence (in some way), felt supported, appreciated and like a true equal. She was quite prejudiced to him at first, all because she thought him a rogue. I wasn’t in love with her character but I didn’t dislike her either. She was just there and bearable. She was kind-hearted, patient and she did get more likeable when she started to warm up to the hero.
The hero is like any other dukes I’ve read about. Seriously, there are so many dukes in the HR world! I do think they’re quite overrated and tend to become boring because the characterization is repetitive and nothing about them feels unique now. Like any other lord in the HR world, he had a rough childhood: a cruel father and an absent mother. Someone broke his heart when he was younger and this caused him to be quite bitter but I don’t think he was totally closed off and he came to terms with his feelings towards the heroine without any difficulty. I did not fall in love with him, but I did not dislike him either. Like my feelings towards the heroine, he was just there and bearable. He was thoughtful, responsible and supportive. Really, he was an okay hero. I do not know why I didn’t love him as I should have given that he wasn’t even bad. I guess it’s because I feel like I’ve read the same hero but just in a different book.
This book is full of tropes. A duke and a blue-stocking spinster. A marriage of convenience. This was a light-hearted read. Nothing about it was earth shattering. There weren’t any moments that kept me on the edge of my seat, made me clutch my kindle to my heart, made my heart break, made me tear up for any reason. It was just supposed to be fun and that’s alright. There were some funny moments that brought a smile to my face and the epilogue was quite cute.
Although this book doesn’t stand out from the rest, I think if someone is looking for a light read full of predictability, then this would be a good choice of book to let a few hours pass by. This wasn’t long and wasn’t too short either, it had just the perfect length. I would give this book three stars, it wasn’t very good but it wasn’t bad either. It was just okay…. And that is okay! This review is shorter than others because I find myself running out of things to say: for I really have nothing more to say. This book was obviously meant to be fun and light and it could be appreciated for what it is.
Love this book, very funny and entertaining. Rogue Duke and Wallflower compromised. This book was very fast going at a good clip. Reading this book was a delight and so fun. I was unable to put down. Time flew reading it. The interactions between the H & H including the supporting members of staff and family were great. It leaves you with a smile on your face and a sweet snarky HEA. I haven't read this author before but will look forward at her checking out her other books. I would recommend this book because this author is keeps you entertained with laughter in this book.
**I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
I absolutely loved this book! It was a fun and heartwarming historical novel, that kept me glued to the pages! The story revolves around Lady Sara Elsmere and the Duke of Dorchester, who's in the business of making money and sees in Lady Sara the chance of furthering his business and finding a mother for his two young wards. For Lady Sara, a bluestocking lover of butterflies, is the chance of getting out of her brother's hold on her future and research funds.
I always gravitate towards historical romances, I mean, it is pretty funny how the sight of a lady's upper ankle or calf excites a man... But in this one it is refreshing to see the main character as a female scholar and still succeed when navigating the ton.
I started with book number 6 of the Infamous Lords, but I will definitely read the rest of the series!
