Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for this Advanced Readers Copy of Killers Amidst Killers by Billy Jensen!
This book was incredibly interesting. I feel like I learned a lot even though I feel like this space in the book world can be pretty saturated. I hate that this book is overshadowed by the author's personal life drama.
WOW! I honestly don't know what to say about this book. It was so well written, but man did this book make me mad. I had to take breaks while I read it so I could just take a breath...I was getting so mad. I want to go into more detail about it all but I just want to keep this short and sweet, and not me venting about how messed up people are. You're just gonna have to read it.
I think Billy did such a great job at getting the word out about all these missing women, and trying to help fight for them. I think this was a great but heartbreaking read. If you are a fan of Billy Jensen, Paul Holes or true crime then this book is for you. Just know, it is rough. Especially, if you know someone who is currently fighting an addiction, or has lost their life to one.
Please remember to be kind to people.
Thank you to NetGalley, William Morrow, and Billy Jensen for ARC in exchange for my review. And thanks again to Billy for fighting for these women.
I can't say that I enjoyed reading this book because of the subject matter. I will say that I think Billy Jensen is a passionate writer who doesn't accept simple explanations. I appreciate his commitment to finding justice for those whom the justice system has left behind. The writing is very conversational, which sometimes works and sometimes throws me off. I learned a lot, I thought a lot, and I hope there is finally some sort of closure.
Thank you to Netgalley, Harper Collins and Billy Jensen for allowing me to read this eArc early!
This is a great work of non fiction, well written, well researched and heartlfelt; the victims voices came through as did the unwavering determination and search for answers. I felt the anger, the struggle, the heartache of everyone who wanted answers, wanted to know what happened to their loved ones. People who struggle with addiction or are in sex work etc., their deaths are often overlooked and swept under the rug and I always appreciate when I read a book in which they are front and center, where their deaths and lives matter.
Given the recent allegations surrounding Jensen's sexual misconduct, I could not bring myself to complete this book.
In light of the allegations against Billy Jensen, I don't feel comfortable reviewing his book at this time. Also, I just learned that the publication has been postponed so it doesn't seem like the right time to post a review either way. All of this is unfortunate of course due to the important subject matter concerning the unsolved murders of eighteen women in Ohio whose deaths have been overlooked and the opioid epidemic that contributed to their murders.
In Killers Amidst Killers, writer Billy Jensen reports on 18 missing and murdered women in the Columbus, Ohio area. He reports that these women were addicted to pills and wound up walking the streets for money to feed their habit.
Jensen says that these victims and others like them quickly disappeared from the headlines because they worked the streets, Their lives mattered, and tragically, some had children, so their stories are important if often overlooked. I hope his book will help the public focus on these poor, forgotten women and the drugs that trapped them.
However, I've recently learned that the publication date of his book has been changed, so it won't be released on July 19, 2022, as planned. According to this article, no reason for the change has been announced yet. https://www.dispatch.com/story/entertainment/books/2022/06/21/billy-jensen-crime-author-bexley-event-canceled-book-release-hold/7685788001/
For this reason, I can't recommend his book at this time.
Given the sexual assault allegations and the decision to postpone/cancel release of this title I do not feel able to give a neutral review at this time.
At the moment, with the SA allegations against the author, I am struggling with giving a fair review of book.
I am glad this book highlights the cases of women mistreated by the system and who lost their lives due to the addictions brought on by the opioid epidemic. However, with the author now facing allegations of misconduct toward women I don't feel like he should be the one to tell their story. I feel terribly for the families of the murdered and missing girls. They deserved better.
This book was not logical and was a DNF. I was going to not submit my thoughts on Netgalley but I didn't realize that it was held against your score or feedback rate/ratio.
Billy Jensen has done it again! He is fantastic at sharing unsolved true crime stories and making them captivating even without a resolution. He gives victims a voice. In Killers Amidst Killers, Jensen explores the cases of 18 unsolved murders in Columbus, Ohio where serial killers are killing under the guise of the opioid epidemic. The book is fast-paced and fascinating. I'll be reading all Jensen writes going forward. Highly recommended to true crime buffs!
The newest book by Billy Jensen is an interesting one. Billy investigates a series of recently missing and/or murdered women in and around Columbus, Ohio. He focuses on factors that may have contributed to the vulnerability of these victims (opioid addiction, sex work) and the apathetic/corrupt law enforcement agencies tasked with solving these crimes. Billy makes personal connections with the families and friends effected by these tragedies, and by doing so brings the humanity of what has happened in these communities. Emotional and raw, this book hopes to inspire people to care about some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
The corruption trail includes Stormy Daniels and murderous law enforcement officers.
Just as his previous book, Billy Jensen has championed the cause for the missing and murdered. This time he sets his sights on Ohio. While sometimes the information is hard to stomach, it's important that the missing/murdered and their families have someone trying to get them answers. If we can help, we need to step up. Get loud and make the officials do their jobs!
This was a very well done book. Billy is a force to be reckoned with in his quest to give a voice and dignity to murdered women who were considered the cause of their own demise because they were drug addicts or sex workers> I liked the format of the book and his style of almost conversational writing.
Billy Jensen is an interesting and compelling writer. I'm so glad that he has brought to light some of the awful crimes that have happened to vulnerable women and explained how the opioid crisis has overshadowed and hidden those stories. I especially enjoyed how the women at the heart of this problem were featured, along with their friends and families that continue to look for them. Heartbreaking.
After finishing Paul Holes newest book, Unmasked, someone had recommended Billy Jensen and I’ve been hooked ever since!
I started this book not knowing what to expect but soon found out that Billy Jensen’s writing is so much different from other true crime authors. Instead of going in depth on how a woman was killed, Billy so eloquently describes who the women were before their tragic deaths. Although they were prostitutes, junkies or homeless; they also had children, they were someone’s daughter, sister, aunt and didn’t deserve what happened to them.
I was able to get halfway through the prologue before the tears came and they just kept coming the more I read.
In this book, Billy takes us to the streets of Columbus, Ohio where women are either found dead or have been missing for years and cops haven’t solved the mystery of their deaths or disappearances. Most of the time, police officers haven’t taken these cases seriously because of their backgrounds of being prostitutes and heroin addicts. Should the media and investigators turn their back on the women that need their help the most? What happened to these women?
It’s so heartbreaking to read how women will get into a car with a stranger and not know if she’ll ever get out. Billy hits the streets and talks to women who knew those that have died or have gone missing. Some have turned their life around but others are still chasing their next high and risk their lives everyday.
This book was a real eye opener into what is going on in the world and it’s incredibly heartbreaking that some mothers have daughters that are still missing and others are still awaiting closure on their daughter’s murders. 😥
"Killers Amidst Killers" by Billy Jensen is a true work of art. I adore the way Billy brings these cases to light that many of us, even those who consume true crime in all forms, have never heard about. I appreciate how he told these victims stories and shared a piece of himself along with them. This makes me wanna put on my online sleuth hat and dig along side Billy to bring more light to these cases for the victims and thei families. Great job, Billy!
An eye-opening account of serial killers preying on vulnerable women who have been victimized by the opioid epidemic. Women from many walks of life fell into opioid addiction through the legitimate use of painkillers for injuries. When they could no longer get the opiate medications to manage their pain through their doctors, many turned to buying them illegally. Some of these women turned to prostitution to pay for those drugs. In turn, they became prey for serial killers who knew their victims would likely not be missed and whom the police would not see as worthy of their time.
While deeply distressing and, at times, difficult to stomach, Jensen's latest nonfiction title is, nevertheless, an important exposure of the systemic apathy, if not downright hostility, of the police and society toward "problematic" victims. This book is an important reminder that victims' rights can be subjective in the eyes of authority and that killers know to target the vulnerable and those on the fringes of society in order to hide their crimes and get away with murder.
