Firstly - this book gets 5 stars and a huge recommendation from me for donating a share of each book purchase to SPCA for the safe welfare of animals - who wouldn’t want to buy a book on that premise?!
Secondly, it’s a great read - fun, lighthearted, a lot like a hallmark film - in that nothing bad or problematic happens, it’s delightful and safe and a really enjoyable read. 100% recommend!
I opened this book hoping for a lighthearted, quick read, and that was exactly what I got! I sped through Men or Paws, finishing in under an hour and a half. I spent half of the time laughing, and the other half trying to stop myself from laughing because I was in public.
The book stars Beth and Rocco. Beth is hired to watch Houdini, Rocco’s dog, and live in his guesthouse for three weeks. They both sign a contract, stating that they won’t flirt or kiss the other. But it’s a rom-com, so we all know how that story goes…
I get how the title relates, but I don’t think it’s a good fit for the book. It makes it sound like there’s a competition between Rocco and Houdini, when in the book it’s the exact opposite.
I really enjoyed the characters.
This was such a cute feel good book!
It had so many of the fun romantic tropes I love, enemies to lovers, celeb falling for the average person, and it involved a lovable, goofy dog. This was a quick read but had many lovable characters. It’s the perfect book for laying poolside this summer.

Thanks to the publisher, author and Netgalley for an ARC of this book. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I love books with dogs in them, especially when they have a personality all of there own. I was expecting the dog in this, Houdini, to feature more prominently in the story but he disappeared in the latter part of the book. I also was expecting it to be about someone older, given the title, but I think it was just a play on words.
This was a nice story about a Hollywood actor falling in love with a regular girl - it was cute in parts and the other characters, particularly the next door neighbour Douglas, made me smile.
The story was a little predictable and I didn't really understand why the sexual tension was strung out so long.
But this was a fun quick read and I enjoyed it.
This is my first read by the author Rich Amooi and I was honestly surprised. By that, I mean I'm not used to reading rom-come written by a male but I was very pleased!
Men or Paws is a rom-com that is well written and I quite liked the funny bits as well. We meet Rocco who is an actor in Hollywood and who is in need of a dog sitter. Enter Beth; said dogsitter who isn't charmed easily by Rocco, at all. I don't want to spoil much more than that as it may take away from the plot.
I liked both main characters and I appreciate the fact it didn't fall into the insta-love ditch (hate those!). Rocco is a character who is sure of himself and his feelings which I appreciate. Shockingly enough, I do get tired of the typical badass alpha male who plays around with the female's heart sometimes (who would've guessed?!). I also found that the author didn't add too much drama or angst which I also like.
I am definitely going to browse other titles from Rich Amooi in the future as this book left me both curious and wanting more.
4/5 🌟!
This book was an unexpected delight and my first Rich Amooi book. I literally read it in one sitting!
When Hollywood's Bad Boy, Rocco Romano, needs a dog-sitter while he reads through scripts, in comes Beth, who needs money to start her own dog treat business. Beth has to live in Rocco's guesthouse for three weeks. Doesn't seem too hard, right? But Rocco's the same celebrity who cost Beth her chef job.
Celebrity romance is one of my top favorite tropes, and this book did not disappoint. Men or Paws is hilarious and witty, and the banter between Rocco and Beth was engaging. I really liked both MCs and found them charming. While it lacked any spice, I enjoyed the tension that built up to their first kiss (which was so sweet). Their chemistry was palpable, and I found the pacing of the story smooth and natural.
If you like celebrity romance, opposites-attract, closed-door rom-com's, then this one is for you. It was lighthearted and fun.
This was adorable and so much fun.
Beth hates Rocco, though she doesn't know him. One encounter years ago was all she needed to know the true character behind Hollywood's bad boy superstar. But, she has a business to start, and his employment offer is too good to pass up. All she has to do is watch his loveable dog, Houdini, for three weeks.
Sparks fly almost immediately, but Beth isn't having it. Except, you know how these stories go! Sooner or later we find out what really happened, and then it becomes a classic game of will-they/won't-they. It's predictable, sure, but heartwarming, light, and fun. The supporting characters are just as much fun as the main characters, and Houdini definitely steals the show.
Enjoy this one - a perfect marshmallow read.
This is the first RomCom I've read that was penned by a man and I have to say, I really enjoyed it!
This book was not spicy at all, but the relationship that built between Beth and Rocco was adorable and yu could *kinda* feel the tension building!
I felt like I could be friends with both characters, and I found myself actually laughing and smiling!
Thank you Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
"Men or paws" is the first rom-com I've read written by a man and I have to say that I'm very surprised with it. I loved how well written it is and the beautiful story it tells. In this book we have Rocco, a well-known Hollywood actor who needs to find someone that can take care of his dog Houdini while he is working. That’s how he meets Beth, the sister of a well-known comedian. Whereas at first Beth hates Rocco (for something that happened in the past that I’m not going to say because it would a spoiler), he likes her from the first moment. However, I would like to clarify that it isn't an instalove (thank goodness).
One of the things I liked most about Rocco is that he's sure about how he feels about Beth and he doesn't hide it. And I like this because he doesn’t play with her feelings.
Regarding the drama of the book I liked it, but I think it could have been avoided if the protagonists had had more communication between them. However, I loved the way they solved it (even more considering the big fan of the movie "Grease" that I am).
To sum up, it's a book that has surprised me a lot and an author that I will consider reading in the future.
Such a good book! A solid romantic comedy without too much drama. Enjoyed Beth and Rocco’s banter and watching their relationship grow. First time reading anything by @richamooi.author but it won’t be the last!
This book was fun! I loved reading about Beth and Rocco. At the beginning of the book Beth hated Rocco and didn't want anything to do with him. However, how could she pass up a deal to make $15000 to help her start her own business.
I absolutely loved, loved this book and the people in it.
Beth is a professional chef who, after losing her job and trying different styles, decides to start an organic dog food business, but in order to take a step in that direction, she has to sell the car she inherited from her dear grandfather or accept the job her brother got her
.
Three weeks taking care of the dog of Hollywood's most coveted star in his guest house doesn't seem like much of a challenge if it weren't for the fact that he's the same movie star who got her fired from her last job, or that to get it she has to apologize for mistaking him for her brother and calling him overrated among other things
.
Of course there are plenty of hilarious situations waiting in its pages and a sweet golden retriever adopted with more tricks than his namesake Houdini, as both find their way to each other.
.
Although the plot development was obvious, I read it to the end because of the chemistry between the characters and the laugh-out-loud situations. I didn't like the character of Beth, she contradicts herself a lot and makes it tedious for the reader to get hooked on the story, but Rocco and Houdini were perfect and make a perfect romcom
.
Thanks to Xpresso Book Tours and Rich Amooi for give me a copy of this fun book in exchange for my honest opinion
Thoroughly enjoyable. I really loved the two main characters’ interactions with each other and with the other characters in the book. I loved the dog, and I loved how generous Rocco is when the pet rescue stuff, which is close to my heart. The storyline isn’t breathtaking or new, but it’s believable and makes for a fun read.
3.5 stars🌠
I’m normally a hopeless romantic but some books make me go… you know… 👉🏻👈🏻 I liked it overall but found it boring in some parts. And again I loved the ending but I say this for every romance 🙈I don’t know what was the point of having all this drama and keeping the book this long if the characters will fell in love right away. While I love the slowburn romance, I secretly wished it to get it over with already at some parts. Still, it made me smile in many parts and of course my favorite character was Houdini!
This was a really charming and cute rom-com. I smiled throughout the entire book. While it was not spicy, the tension of “when will they finally kiss each other?!?!” was certainly there! Is it possible to have 10 pack abs? I never count abs so I don’t know… but the descriptions of the characters were great. I really felt like I was in the story. Truly enjoyable. I would read another book from Rich Amooi again!
This is Rich Amooi’s 18th book, but the first I have read. I specifically requested this one because of the male author. It seems most rom coms or chick lit is written by women and I wanted to see how it was reading one written by a man.
This cheesy, soppy, schmaltzy offering was a delight. The book only has a handful of cast members, and really only two that are explored. The others are only the periphery. With such a small cast, it works, and allows the author to draw out the corniness of their relationship.
Given that this is his 18th book, I was not surprised at the smooth consistency of it. The author has clearly found a successful formula that works, and is replicating it.
If I had not have known this was written by a man, I would not have known either way! It doesn’t really matter who writes it - but given that less male authors are out there these days, I think it is nice to support the ones we have - especially when they write cracking books like this.
This was a page turner, that I couldn’t put down. This said, I probably wouldn’t binge read all his books as I like to mix it up and alternate the rom coms with thrillers. This one reads as an extended short story, which is great, but needs to be read among other books with more substance.
Perfect holiday read!
The only thing I didn’t like was the name - Men or Paws. It just didn’t really go with the book for me.
A lovely romcom book, I love the little dog, really funny and cozy, highly recommended! I laugh so much with this book.
This is my first time reading something by this author and I can tell you it won't be my last. I absolutely loved this book! Romantic comedies have been my jam lately, and this one definitely fits the bill. From the first page till the very last this book will keep you smiling and the smile on your face will still be there long after you have finished. With an enemies to lovers trope this gives you a fun and cute, hilarious story that is sure to give you all the feels. The characters were wonderful and felt so relatable, I couldn't help but fall in love with them. The storyline had a nice smooth flow and the romance was wonderful and there were plenty of humorous moments that had me laughing out loud or just generally left me with a smile on my face.
I found this to be a thoroughly entertaining and absolutely adorable story and I'm glad to have had the opportunity to read it.
I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
This book was absolutely refreshing and cute. An adorable romcom with light hearted banter and fun. The vharcters of Rocco and Beth were absolutely cute and their chemistry, though a bit too fast, it was sweet and sizzling. I might have laughed and smiled a couple or more tikes than normal and surely Houdini knew his job well of entertaining not only his owners but also the audience. You, my author , have done a wonderful job. Cant wait to read more of your books!!
A fun quick read. I loved Houdini! I liked the neighbor former zoo keeper but got a little tired of the poop jokes.
