This story was so much fun! Great characters and an interesting story are what every reader seeks and In a New York Minute hits all the marks. It’s bad enough that Franny Doyle gets laid off from her job, but on her way home, her dress gets caught in the subway door and tears the dress exposing her backside. Yes, dig me a hole right here so I can crawl in and die from mortification. Fortunately for us, Franny does not. A handsome guy, who Franny nicknames "Hot Suit”, gives her his suit jacket to salvage her modesty. A few tears are shed, she snots all over him, he gets off the train and she has no idea who he is or how she is going to return his jacket to him.
Unbeknownst to either one of them, the entire scene is recorded and appears on social media, making them instant celebrities. #SubwayQTs. At this point, I would be considering a change of identity and city. Instead, Franny meets her rescuer, Hayes Montgomery III, when they are invited to do a television interview and my first impression is he is kind of a stuffed suit, hot or not. The jacket is returned and really, is there any reason to think these two would meet again under any circumstances? Over the course of this story, not only do they cross paths multiple times, but are so dang stinkin’ cute, it got me right in the feels.
Franny is a wonderful character with great spirit and attitude and Hayes is like that box of chocolates Forrest Gump’s mother told him about. Not only was he not a stuffed suit, but he was also fabulous. The arrogant persona he presents to the world is the outer shell to protect the mushy center he keeps private.
This story was hilarious right from the start. The writing was spot on, but the narration performed by Amanda Dolan and Neil Hellegers was fantastic. They captured the essence and personality of these characters perfectly. The supporting characters Cleo, Lola, Eleanor and Perrine added to the fun of the story and New York City is a character in its’ own right. I want to go across the Brooklyn Bridge and eat at Grimaldi’s mainly to see if the Arizona locations actually do it justice.
My Final Verdict: This story is pure fluff, but it works! If you’re looking for something cute and light that doesn’t require a degree in rocket science to understand, give this one a try. This would have been a great rom-com movie from Nora Ephron.

What a sweet romance. Franny and Hayes have a very cute and hilarious meet cute! He is her knight in shining armor when her dress gets caught in the door and splits open. I laughed throughout this book. The romance was so sweet. I loved this book. I definitely recommend this one. Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Audio for the audio arc in exchange for my honest review.
Full disclosure that I have been a devout fan of Kate Spencer's Forever35 podcast for years, so I was delighted to get my hands on a copy of her rom-com In a New York Minute, which is as lovely as a new serum (IYKYK).
This tale of Franny Doyle and her quasi-nemesis Hayes Montgomery III is perfect for fans of Jasmine Guillory and Christina Lauren.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for sharing this book with me. All thoughts are my own.
I am catastrophically in love with this book and I absolutely adore Franny & Hayes.
Their wild & hilarious meet cute would forever be my favourite✨️
Couldn't recommend this book enough💖
This is a super cute, super fun romcom. If you love Meg Ryan or Julia Roberts movies, you’d love In a New York Minute. The meet cute between Franny and Hayes is adorable. The story is utterly charming and funny.
This is a slow burn, closed door romance - as a heads up to my fellow steam queens. There’s also some miscommunication that I could have done without.
The audiobook narration was fabulous. Thanks for giving us dual narration for the dual POV story.
I can’t wait to see what Kate Spencer comes out with next.

Two strangers, a packed subway during rush hour, and a ripped dress. This book has the most memorable meet-cute setup! And, I mean, for that alone you should read it.
That being said, I really liked both our main characters. It’s an opposites attract story and I enjoyed the fact that they really took the time to become friends first. It felt like an organic way for the relationship to blossom. Now as a romance reader, it may have gotten a bit frustrating at times the longer the “friendship” part went on.
I actually think if you’re open to seeing this book as a cross between chic-lit and romance you’ll do much better with it than expecting a full on romance. There is a bit more of a character journey in this one and the romance is a slow burn. Even when it does get going it’s not the sizzling off the pages kind of romance. But there was something endearing about it. Just approach this one with the right mindset going in.
Besides Franny and Hayes we also have a great supporting cast of friends in this book. I loved the fact that both of our main characters had strong friendships in their lives.
IN A NEW YORK MINUTE would be a really fun romcom movie and I honestly hope that it gets made. If you’re on the hunt for a lighthearted and sweet romcom to read this Summer, check this one out.
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Stars (3 Stars)
The narration was great and kept me interested! They did a good job at distinguishing between characters.
The romance was okay, there was a lot of miscommunication so not my favourite trope and I felt like some stuff dragged on. Overall it was a quick okay read.
After unceremoniously getting laid off from her job, Franny Doyle isn’t having a great day (to say the least). But her awful day takes a turn for the worse when her dress gets caught in a subway door, threatening to expose her to a crowd of unsuspecting passengers…that is until a handsome stranger offers her his coat. When a post about their exchange online goes viral, suddenly everyone is invested in Franny’s would-be romance. The only problem is, her knight-in-shining suit, Hayes, is more awkward than swoon-worthy…
As a diehard rom-com lover, I have to say I was utterly charmed by In A New York Minute. It’s the quintessential rom-com, with an adorably awkward meet-cute, plenty of laughs (often at the expense of embarrassment-prone heroine), and a slow-building romance that’s ultimately swoon-worthy and satisfying, yet with a number of bumps along the way. And what would a rom-com be without a bubbly heroine? Franny is a fun, effortlessly likable protagonist, with equally amusing friends, whose teasing banter and tight-knit connection give the narrative a lighthearted feel. Franny’s vivacious attitude is certainly an entertaining contrast to the more stoic demeanor of Hayes, who’s more likely to put his foot in his mouth than sweep Franny off her feet.
If you love opposites attract and/or grumpy/sunshine romances, or if you’re in the mood for a sweet, comical romantic comedy, In A New York Minute is a thoroughly enjoyable read. I look forward to seeing what Kate Spencer comes out with next!
The audiobook of this meet cute romance is absolutely endearing. It’s narrated well. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the review copy.
it was a cute read! Franny and Hayes were enjoyable characters, I personally did not love the miscommunication these two seemed to dance around for most of the book and I would have loved getting to see these two in their comfortable element together a bit longer but honestly it was adorable and sweet and I'd absolutely suggest it to a friend :)
The quintessential NY Love Story, not unlike the classic Meg Ryan rom coms of the 90s.
Franny and Hayes could not have a more New York run in, crammed subway ride gone wrong. So, when they become a viral love sensation despite their awkward exchange they continue to be thrown together in the wildest ways.
There is so so so much to love about this from Franny's love of bagels and family dynamics to Hayes business partnership and relationship with his cousin the characters are so loveably awkward and perfect crafted for this story.
What an absolutely hysterical meet-cute these two have!
Franny is having a really bad day and it gets worse...the subway doors close on her dress and now she's showing everything in the back...until Hayes comes to her rescue. He's gorgeous but almost as awkward as Franny. They leave each other in the subway with Hayes's jacket covering her up. No plans to return the jacket...but someone else has a plan.
Unbeknownst to them - someone is live sharing their encounter on Instagram and it is going viral.
The interactions between these two were awkward and unpleasant to watch. They were both this way. But I think that's what made them so cute together. Neither is perfect and neither is able to put into words how they are feeling.
I listened to the audible and found myself in Hayes and Franny's world and I didn't want to leave. The narrators did a fantastic job of pulling me in!
Such a cute and funny book!
This reminded me of an old-time rom com movie. You start with a meet cute and the hero coming to the damsel’s rescue. Lots of misunderstandings, disagreements and a we are too different moment. Except I might note that it is very current since it is a viral Instagram post that brings them back together.
I usually listen to books in fits and starts, but was lucky enough to be able to listen to quite a bit of this one on a long car ride. Amanda Dolan and Neil Hellegers were excellent narrators and drew me into the story.
There were laugh out loud moments and I was rooting for Franny and Hayes. And having been to New York City many times, I loved how it was like a supporting character in the book. It was represented well.
If you're ready for a charming romance, you should definitely pick this one up. I can’t wait to listen to her next book.
Thank you Forever and Hachette Audio for my gifted copies of In a New York Minute by Kate Spencer.
I listened to this in one day. I could not stop listening. This RomCom gave me all the feels I needed from the first moment to the last. Franny and Hayes meet on a subway and become the famous "subway couple" due to social media sharing how Hayes helped Franny avoid an even more embarrassing moment in public. This is a slow-burn; opposites attract romance as Franny and Hayes keep crossing paths during spontaneous and forced situations. There were multiple hilarious and sweet moments throughout the book. Overall, I highly recommend reading In a New York Minute if you need a great romance.
A meet disaster leads to love in this romance debut. After an embarrassing subway fiasco leads to Franny borrowing a jacket from Hayes, she hopes to never see him again. Though she thinks it’ll be easy to avoid him in Manhattan, fate seems determined that their paths cross again.
Kate Spencer truly captured the feeling of a 2000s rom-com in this novel. I could envision scenes so clearly in my head and it reminded me a lot of movies that I loved watching growing up. It’s also a giant love letter to New York City and I think readers who have lived there will see many of their own experiences reflected here.
There’s also tons of tropey goodness here and I loved Hayes’ support of Franny when she needed it most and a loved one was in the hospital. There were a few moments I wanted a bit more agency from the characters (such as Hayes ending things between the woman he was seeing as he realized he wanted Franny rather than the woman ending it), but overall found this to be an enjoyable read.
The book is narrated by Amanda Dolan and Neil Hellegers, who I felt did an excellent job of capturing the voices of the main characters and engaging me as a listener.
This is Spencer’s debut and I’m excited to see what she does next!
This book was adorable, quirky, a little cheesy and was enjoyable to listen too. Frannie and Hayes were an adorable couple whose chemistry was amazing. The banter in this book was dynamic and engaging. This book did feel a bit far fetched.... the string of bad luck the main character has in the first couple chapters just doesn't even seem really possible. The book was also a tad long, it could have moved a little quicker.
I enjoyed both narrators for this audio book. They were compelling and kept me listening. This was a great escape from life and something I enjoyed to pass the time but it is not a super memorable story. 4 stars! I would recommend this to a friend who loves romance and is tired of all the typical tropes.
In a New York Minute was a fun rom-com that starts with the worst day of someone's life.
Franny and Hayes were funny and cute as they navigated their feelings for one another, all while having multiple embarrassing moments shared between the two.
Spice level- 2. There was some under the shirt like action but the rest was fade to black... unfortunately.
I enjoyed it and will look out for more books from Kate Spencer.
*Thank you NetGalley and Forever for my ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Do you love the grumpy sunshine trope? If so you may want to check out In A New York Minute by @katespencer
Franny Doyle is having the worst day ever! She’s been laid off from her job, the subway doors ripped her dress and she has flashed her unmentionables to all of NYC. When handsome Hayes steps in to save the day by offering her his jacket, she can’t help but be attracted to him. When their meet cute goes viral they are thrust into the spotlight and meet up again. Sparks fly between these two opposites as they keep running into each other.
I enjoyed this fun meet cute on the subway. My heart just felt for Franny with all the things going wrong. Hayes though is 🔥🔥🔥 ! I’m a sucker for a guy in a suit. Loved their chemistry. If you are looking for a cute rom com check this one out!
Immediately loved the disaster of a first meeting. Unfortunately, that was just about the only memorable thing in this book for me. It didn’t really leave an impression... Not much to say other than it’s a pretty standard and cute rom-com.
