If I had my way, Christmas would be a year-round holiday. I enjoy cooking and baking, too, so reading The Christmas Movie Cookbook was a top priority :-)
The cookbook has gorgeous photography! Most of the recipes are accompanied by a corresponding photo with Christmas-themed backgrounds. The ingredients are easy to find, nothing that is going to send you to specialty grocery stores to complete your shopping. The difficulty and time required ranges from beginner/fast to more advanced/adventurous. There’s definitely something for everyone. The recipes include every course, including cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. The book is also filled with short descriptions of many Christmas movies for inspiration.
Is it almost December? Can’t wait!
I am a library associate and received an advance copy from #NetGalley. Opinions are my own.
Love to cook, but nothing compares to cooking and baking during the holiday season. Also love cookbooks yet this would make a wonderful addition to my collection. Not only does it have recipes, but it also has ideas for entertaining as well as setting up your table. But, oh, the baking. It’s especially nice as you use those extra special ingredients which make the results look and taste wonderful. I can hardly wait to serve Salted Caramel and Fudge Milkshake. My mouth is watering just reading the title! This is one book that will get plenty of use and become a valued part of the Christmas season!
I received a free copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
This is the perfect cookbook for a Christmas lover like myself. I love that every recipe coincides with a Christmas movie. My plan is to have the kids pick a movie 1x a week or possibly more and we will make the meal or dessert to go along with it. Which is such a fun idea and will get your kids interested in cooking or baking also.
So far we have made the crispy fish sticks and we all loved them. I also made the white chocolate espresso shortbread which was great with coffee! I had the cranberry sparkler cocktails which you cannot go wrong with.
If you need holiday menu ideas or just something to change up your nights with your kids this books for you! I highly recommend this cookbook! Enjoy!
4.5 stars for nostalgic, delicious, whimsical recipes~
I really liked how inclusive of so many all-time Christmas favorites this cookbook is, including ghosts of Christmas past and present ;) Not only does this cookbook whip out all of the nostalgia of my childhood, from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" to "A Charlie Brown Christmas", but it has some brand new Netflix faves as well.
There's main courses, beverages, desserts and treats galore~ There is definitely a little something for everyone to enjoy.
This would be such a fun cookbook to display during the holidays to share the nostalgia with family and friends :)
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon Element for the digital ARC!
Browsing through this cookbook makes me want to watch cozy Christmas movies, wrap myself in a warm blanket, and make Christmas cookies! Even though it's May as I write this review! I definitely see myself using the cookbook every holiday season, and matching it with favorite holiday movies. The movies inspiring the recipes range from the expected (Elf, Miracle on 34th Street) to the off beat (Bad Mom's Christmas) and Die Hard. Because, yes, 100%, Die Hard is a Christmas movie!
There is a lot of emphasis on meat and wheat, so there isn't a great variety for people with allergies or dietary restrictions. However, most of the recipes do seem family friendly. I like the tips for hosting a great Christmas party at the beginning of the book, as well.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC.
I've been really getting into cookbooks lately and the Christmas movie cookbook I adored. I love the color. The pictures were stunning. I wish there were more images since I'm a much more visual person. Also it would have been nice to see some of the movie images connect to the recipes. I think the ideas and the tips offered are great themes. The recipes that match from movies from Christmas time we're adorable. I didn't have a chance to try out any of the recipes. I am definitely purchasing this book once it's out in September. I do think the cover should have more like a movie reel or movie related items on it. I think that would make it better to connect to the idea. Otherwise it just looks like a Christmas cookbook. It was a little hard to assess completely on an ebook. I think a hand copy would have been better but I really loved from what I saw and I can't wait till it comes out!
Great cookbook that covers any Christmas movies you can think of, even Die Hard. I appreciate the thematic attention to detail. For all the movies I have seen in this book, the recipes were either ones mentioned in the movies themselves or themed appropriately like the Peanuts "peanut cookies". The picture quality of the recipes was also really good and almost every recipe had a picture which I appreciate in a cookbook. Will definitely be making some of these recipes in the future!
This is a great holiday cookbook with plenty of fun beverages and dishes for your Christmas party. Be sure to check out the Christmas dessert section and rich hot chocolate recipe!
I loved this book! It has a little bit of something for everyone. The movies that go with the recipes are fantastic, with lots that you do not see mentioned much. The recipes themselves are great and I look forward to trying even some of the harder ones. The pictures are fantastic! The photographer really did such a great job. This is a wonderful Christmas Cookbook that is worth adding to your collection.
This was a quick, fun read of a cookbook. Basic recipes for the most part, with interesting tie-ins to various Christmastime films. I appreciated Ms Rutland's addition of several less-obvious Christmas movies (a few new-to-me ones that I'll have to track down!), making this a fresh cookbook for people to enjoy.
A delight of a cookbook! If you are a fan of a broad range of Christmas films you are bound to be delighted by the recipes within. From classic A Christmas Carol Roast Goose to Die Hard's Linzer Star Cookies there are recipes for every taste. Any aspiring cook is sure to conjure up a yummy menu to pair with a Holiday movie marathon with Rutland's contribution to Christmas themed cookery.
I like that this isn't just Christmas recipes or one movie; I like that it's a lot of different Christmas movies combined into one cookbook. There are some really great recipes in here!
Christmas movies are a guilty pleasure! So are special Christmas meals! The Christmas Movie Cookbook combines both and the result is mouthwatering collection of recipes and creative suggestions to combine them into party menus.
The recipes are organized into traditional groupings; beverages, appetizers and soups, salads and sides, desserts, etc. Some are inspired by a Christmas movie while others were part of that movie. For example erwtensoep, a traditional Dutch pea soup was inspired by Santa Claus speaking Dutch in Miracle on 34th Street while Creamy Mashed Potatoes was featured in the Christmas dinner in the movie While You Were Sleeping. As usual, my favorites are the desserts. I can’t wait to try Japanese Christmas Cake (Tokyo Godfathers) and Spiced Pumpkin Tarts (Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas). The Christmas Movie Cookbook is not to be read while you are hungry! 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Simon Element and Julia Rutland for this ARC.
Do you enjoy bringing together family and friends? How about a movie too? Christmas movies? If this sounds perfect to you, you’ll love this book that combines them all to celebrate Christmas! Julia Rutland’s The Christmas Movie Cookbook is a ready reference to create your most memorable holiday movie marathons.
From entertaining tips to a variety of food and spirits, this book will keep you in ideas for holiday movie themed nights for years to come. Although the section on tips is slim, the information is invaluable when planning a get-together for all to enjoy. Her ability to connect the dots between various holiday movies and some you may not even think of Christmas movies, is superb. You’ll find old movies, new movies and a few unusual food ideas - potato fish sticks for Klaus is the one that comes to mind for me.
This is a great book to add to your holiday or cookbook collection. I can’t wait to purchase it and give some as gifts.
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
I am someone who loves holiday films and hosting themed parties, so “The Christmas Movie Cookbook” is right up my alley. Julia Rutland’s collection showcases food and drinks featured in or inspired by many seasonal titles. The selections range from traditional (“It’s a Wonderful Life” & Rotisserie Chicken) to unconventional (“Die Hard” & Linzer Star Cookies), classic (“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” & Roast Beef) to modern (“The Family Stone” & Breakfast Strata), and family-friendly (“Home Alone” & Plain Cheese Pizza) to more adult (“A Bad Moms Christmas” & Spiked Spiced Cider). The cookbook also includes entertaining tips and sample menus for different kinds of gatherings.
There were a few times when I thought the film and recipe pairing didn’t match up very well—for instance, “Last Christmas” and… salad? Something Yugoslavian would have made much more sense because of the main character’s background. Also, some of my favorite holiday movies were overlooked—I would have suggested frozen hot chocolate for “Serendipity,” clam chowder for “Sleepless in Seattle,” and something with a caviar garnish for “You’ve Got Mail.”
Overall, this is a fun and inspiring cookbook. I can’t wait to make the creamy mashed potatoes from “While You You Were Sleeping”!

This cookbook is so much fun! Great recipes paired with holiday movies and special scenes from the movie, such as a Really Rich Hot Chocolate recipe as a reminder of the hot chocolate scene in Polar Express with the dancing waiters. If you love holiday recipes and holiday movies then this book is a must.
Do you live Christmas? (yes!) Do you love to cook? (Yes!) have you ever wondered just exactly how to prepare The Who’s Roast Beast? (Yes, yes, YES!) The Christmas Movie Cookbook is where it’s at! There are beverages-Think Really Rich Hot Chocolate from the Polar Express, to desserts-like Giant Chocolate Chunk Cookies from the Santa Clause, and everything in between. Easy to follow recipes, entertaining tips for those holiday parties, and menu plans-this one has it all and is an absolute must for the Christmas people-we all know at least one.
*I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion*
Christmas baking is one of the things I love to do.. This book brought all the classics from the movies. My husband was excited to try the meatloaf from A Christmas Story as I was excited about the one from Meet Me in St Louis. I highly recommend this book to those who would love to try the foods from all your classic Christmas movies.
Thank you NetGalley, Julia Rutland and Simon Element for the ARC of
The Christmas Movie Cookbook. This is my personal review.
I love cookbooks and this one was the most fun cookbook I have read. What a great idea to put together a cookbook with recipes from Christmas movies. These recipes can be for any time of the year but to have a recipe from a movie and then to watch that movie for a special new holiday tradition to start this year
I have picked out so many recipes I am going to make from this book.
The recipes are just what we all need in our lives. I have many times wanted a movie and thought to myself how much I would like to make a dish that they are having in eat.
And then to top it off besides the great variety of recipes the photos are mouthwatering!
This cookbook will make a fantastic gift for a cook or film buff!
What a fun book! Full of interesting recipes that tie in with your favorite Christmas movies. Personally, my favorite Christmas movie is "A Christmas Story", and I can't wait to make the Old-Fashioned Meatloaf in the book. This is a quick read, and I am sure that you will find yourself pulling recipes from it to entertain your friends. I am really looking forward to next Christmas, and the hosting of our annual "White House Christmas Party", to make several of these! Yum!
