The Wolf's Name by Raelyn Teague is an adult fantasy novel set in Canada in the 1880s. The story revolves around Matilda, whose brother Nathaniel has recently died. Matilda believes he was murdered, but no one else does. She decides to look for clues that prove that Nathaniel was murdered. During the course of her investigation, she discovers a man who acts like a wolf, magic powers, and hidden secrets.
Here is a gripping excerpt from the Prologue:
"June 15th, 1883
Lucas kept his word. His front-page advertisement in the paper brought half of New Westminster to my show. On the outdoor stage, a simple suggestion from me had Mr. Richards howling at the late afternoon sun and pawing at an itch with the toe of his muddy shoe. The air filled with laughter, and the eyes in the crowd glittered so bright I thought they were diamonds.
They wouldn’t have grinned if they’d known how the Power could enslave them. If I only knew how to wield it. If I let it enslave me first. Oh, how it wanted to."
Overall, The Wolf's Name is an adult fantasy novel that will appeal to fans of Dracula or the Soulless series. One highlight of this book is how historically accurate it felt reading it. Not many books can transport me back into the 19th century, particularly when it's a fantasy. But I really felt like this book would not be out of place next to Dracula on someone's bookshelf. If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of fantasy books in general, I recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in April!
