Another interesting description that fell hard. The story is so filled with Southern Gothic tropes that it was work to trudge through each chapter. I had to walk away because it was incredibly frustrating to have a great story premise fall victim to all the stereotypes.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Two societal extremes, the homeless and the wealthy convene in this intriguing tale of a young man’s death and subsequent disappearance of a well-known local. It is laced with detail of Savannah’s dark history, shady business happenings, socialite scene, and crime-ridden streets.
Having been to Savannah recently, it was fun reading a book in the setting of the city! Definitely a different book (probably not for everyone), but I enjoyed it.
This is an atmospheric book with terrific characters; it's set in the beautiful city of Savannah, but the darkness and secrets of the city seep through. The novel centers around the murder of Luke and his missing friend Stony. The reader is pulled into the midst of the Musgrove family, an old Savannah family, as their matriarch Morgana takes on the case.
The Kingdoms of Savannah is full of complex characters and rich with history. This is a fictional story, but feels like it could be real. A great read.
There is murder, kidnapping, and a look at the underbelly of Savannah's sorted history. The book was full of details and interesting characters. Unfortunately, the author's writing made it difficult to keep the city's history straight and each character lacked development. I think that it was a very ambitious project; it just lacked structural development. Since this was a book my book club was gifted I felt that I had to read it all the way through. Listening to the audio book as I read helped me to keep the characters and the events better organized in my mind.
I liked a lot of different aspects of the book like the atmosphere and some of the characters. Overall i had a really hard time getting into the story for some reason. I did enjoy how southern it really did seem overall but it feel kinda flat for me in my opinion. If you are the fan of southern justice/mystery you may like this story.
I really enjoyed many different parts of this book. I loved the multigenerational struggle between the family unit itself. I loved Ransom as a character and Jaq as a character. The setting was perfect and I felt like I could envision myself there. The story was really well executed but I feel like I needed something else. I feel like I had a hard time connecting all the dots and I am normally very good at that. I don't know if it was just me or if others had the same issue. I really enjoyed the exposure of corruption is the small town south. Overall, very intriguing and very very good!!
The Kingdoms of Savannah is a mystery thriller set in the southern city of Savannah, Georgia and follows a murder mystery that involves several members of the same family.
I really wanted to like this book more. The premise was intriguing but for whatever reason it just did not grab me or resonate with me as strongly as I would’ve liked.
I think the main problem I had was the pacing. It just took too long to get going and had difficulty maintaining my interest. The story did pick up toward the end but it was too little, too late.
I will say the characters were interesting and entertaining for the most part. Both Ransom and Jaq in particular I enjoyed and were engaging characters
I would like to thank @NetGalley and @Celadon Books for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book is available now!!
Thank you to @netgalley and @celadonbooks for the eARC. 🤓
If you’re into books that involve dark mysteries, murder, scandal, corruption, old southern drama, etc. then this book might just be right up your alley. However, I will say that this book is a major slow burn. Some characters I really liked and others I just couldn’t connect with. Overall, a great book, but not necessarily one I absolutely need to own a copy of or want to scream it’s praises from the rooftops.
It took some time to get into this book. I struggled with the heavy Southern dialogue and keeping track of so many characters. The chapters were too long as well. The setting and history was really interesting and I pressed on. By chapter 4 and 5 I was really into the book and then the ending felt abrupt. I wanted more closure but overall I enjoyed the book.
I really tried to get into this book, but I could not. It’s written all over the place and is so hard to keep up with. I could not finish this one.
The Kingdoms of Savannah - George Dawes Green
The Kingdoms of Savannah by George Dawes Green is a thriller/mystery set in Savannah. It starts off at the local watering hole, Peeps, where someone gets murdered, and another disappears. One of Savannah's most respected women, Morgana, is called to take on this mystery despite her children's protests. This is a very atmospheric book and one you really need to be in the mood to read. I have mixed feelings overall but ultimately did enjoy it.
This outstanding mystery is set in one of my all time favorite places: Savanna, Georgia. The story is ripe with intrigue and rich with history. I loved how the author put me into two worlds: high society and homeless encampments. It showed what a huge divide there is in that city. He also gives a glimpse into the past by tracing some of the city’s unpleasant history.
The writing style is tight and edgy, making this story even more compelling. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good mystery.
Many folks are gonna love reading “ The Kingdoms Of Savannah” by George Dawes Green. Thanks to NetGalley I have been given the chance to read this book the past several weeks. I just fought this book because I should have enjoyed it more. It’s written in a highly stylish way, it has complicated characters, and it oozes its Savannah, Georgia location. So, quickly: another night at a local dive tavern, a murder occurs, and we are drawn into the culture, née the subculture, of “earthy Savannah.
Yet despite my determination to see this story through I read page-after-page waiting for that point where the story grabs me and propels me forward. We meet character after character (after character) with many that are interesting of their own accord but left me wishing an editor had hacked them away. I also have acquired at least 3 credits at the local college for graduating from the History 331 Course entitled “Savannah Georgia History.” Interesting…yes. But so, so much? This book consists of only five (5) chapters so they move on for a long period of time. Neither good nor bad: just be prepared.
I may go back and reread this book because it has so much going for it. I suspect I just need to be in a different mood to enjoy the off-beat characters and unique plotting. So I shall rate the book at 3 stars but remain open to those that found it a 5-star read.
No, thank you. I’m sorry to say I did not enjoy this book—as a Southerner who knows a thing or two about the history of our stories cities and the myths and legends that live within them, I was unimpressed. This was just a total miss for me. I didn’t really buy the premise and I don’t feel like Savannah was utilized well as either a backdrop or a character. It seems as though at times the city was supposed to be both but neither was successful. Perhaps others will enjoy it more, but I was hoping for a richer Southern gothic vibe and it just didn’t work out.
I was intrigued by the synopsis of this book. I love a gothic setting, however I had a hard time getting into this book and I didn't really gravitate on picking it up.
This book started a bit slow but then picked up somewhat. The setting is Savannah of course and that pulled me right in. I love Southern settings. The main character was not likable to me. A detective who calls on her children to help her solve a crime. That was a bit out there for me but this author did a great job with it. Unfortunately I just did not connect with this storyline. I found it to be more than it should have been if you will.
Beautiful cover. Beautiful setting. I didn't connect with any of the characters and that is never a good thing. At least for me.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC. This is my own true feelings about this book.
3 stars.
After a slow start, the book came together as a good mystery. I learned a lot about Savannah, even though I am very familiar with the town. I highly recommend this book as a mystery that has many angles to it. I did not guess who did it until the end and was quite surprised.
I love the city of Savannah so I was excited when you reached out offering me a copy of The Kindgoms of Savannah. This book is not my typical genre and I’ll admit that I had a hard time with it. Too many characters, chapters that are too long (huge pet peeve of mine)…I guess I’m just not the right audience for this one.
Thank you for the chance to read. Since I didn’t love it I’ll refrain from reviewing elsewhere.
Savannah, GA. One of the most quintessential southern cities you would ever want to visit. Full of charm, southern gentility, beautiful houses, good food, history, and of course, ghosts. This book though, explores the unseen underbelly of this vibrant city. The machinations of the elite, the greed and corruption of elected officials and the police, the homeless dwelling on the periphery where they are ignored…or murdered.
This is a unique, intriguing story of justice, truth and the never ending racism that plagues the city and the country.
Ghost do exist.
Deep family secrets in Savannah with an eerie setting made for an interesting setting. We follow Jaq and her family in this historical city with ghost tours and mysteries that slowly become revealed.
I found this book confusing at times and got to a point where my interest waned. It was slow and not very direct in the storytelling.
Thank you to NetGalley and Celadon Books for the advance complimentary e-copy of this book.
