A very sweet love story, supposed to be a romcom, but I am just going to say there were not many laughs. Rachel used to work at a very nice hotel in Florida, when a sleezeball guest tried to take advantage of her, which ended with the truth being twisted and Rachel being fired. Having a young child to care for, she started applying for jobs when a friend suggested her dream job, only problem? It was in Ohio. Deciding to take a chance, she packs up and moves to unknown territory. Insert a good looking grump, and no hotel in site. Will Rachel and her daughter head back to Florida, or stay and live her dream of building a hotel from the ground up with a grumpy boss?
The book was very sweet. There are a few adult scenes but nothing very spicy. There is mention of child death before the story actually starts, so the entire time I was hoping nothing happened to Rachel's daughter. It was a good story but I do not think it should be listed as romcom.
How much can I rave about this book, and Trish Doller? I adored Float Plan, book one in this series, but I'm not sure which book I loved the most. They are both absolutely incredible, each in their own ways. It's a tie!
I love the travel industry aspect of each book (I work in travel myself), with Anna running off on a sail boat, but this one is about Rachel (Anna's sister), working for a big hotel in Miami. Both books tackle some very difficult topics, with Anna's huge loss, and this book being a bit on the lighter side - though Rachel still has some difficulties in her life to overcome. Mason also has a tragic past.
Rachel works at one of the best resorts in Miami Beach as a night concierge and manager. One of the entitled, Rich, regular guests tries to take advantage of her and in an attempted sexual assault (#metoo), pulls the "rich white dude that knows everybody and always gets his way" card, and got her fired when she wouldn't accept his advances. Having lost the job she loves and needs, and can't get another decent job in the surrounding Florida area (likely blacklisted after that, by the other rich and entitled white dudes), and having a 3 year old daughter to support, Rachel accepts the advice of a former coworker to contact a friend that runs a Brew Hotel in a former winery, on an island in Ohio (Kelleys Island), Mason.
While a difficult place to find anything out about, she is immediately hired, packs up her life, leaves her Mom and her daughter's deadbeat father behind, and drives across the country to start a brand new life. Getting to the island, she finds a partially built hotel that is nothing like it was talked up to be, an extremely grumpy new boss, and wonders what she has done to herself!
This is a tale of new beginnings, finding themselves, where they belong in the world, finding their places, and forging new friendships and families. The main characters, Rachel and Mason (the grumpy hotel owner), with their forced proximity, find themselves - with each other - and in the new friends on the island. They grow and change together. The grumpy cat finds a new best friend in a toddler. A deadbeat father sorts himself out. An historical family home is loved once again. Drama and hardships are figured out - together.
The chemistry all around is brilliant. Trish Doller is such a beautiful storyteller. I wish there was another Beck Sister to get another Beck Sisters series book! I can't wait for more brilliant works from her to be lost in the storylines again.
I absolutely recommend this book and series to everyone, and especially to listen to the audio - Sarah Naughton does a superb job again, as with Float Plan! 5-stars to Trish for the writing and also to Sarah for the narrating.
I received an ALC review copy from NetGalley and Macmillan Audio, and this is my honest feedback. Thank you!
This is Romance, and this is the second book in the Beck Sisters series. The first book in this series was Float Plan, and I have read and review that book. This book is not like the Float Plan, but this book follows the main character (Anna) of Float Plan sister (Rachel). I really loved Rachel's character. I was pulled into this book from the beginning, and I could not put it down. I loved this book so much. I loved the story line/plot of this book. The romance of this book is slow moving, but it was so cute. This book covers some really hard topics, but I think it is done really well. The cat in this book was one of my favorite character for a pet that cat has so much personality. Also, Rachel daughter was so cute, and I think her character broke up so of the hard times in this book. This is a very well written book with great characters. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (St. Martin's Griffin) or author (Trish Doller) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
I re-read this book by listening to the audiobook, and I still really enjoyed this book. The narrator did a great job, and I loved listening to this audiobook.
this novel comes with all the feels - happiness, sadness, frustration - and it’s one of those books i wish could be based on real life so i could meet all the residents of kelleys island. this is the second installment of the “beck sisters” and “the suite spot” focuses on rachel beck. i didn’t read the first novel but i loved this so much, you already know it’s part of my TBR! i listened to the audiobook version of “the suite spot” and the narrator was amazing and i fell in love with her rendition of the novel. she pulled off all the voices (and accents) without making them too similar, which made the dialogue all the more interesting. once my local bookstore has these in stock, i am definitely investing in one! i want to read through it a second time before lending it to my mom and my circle of college friends because they all need a bit of rachel and mason in their lives!! this is one of those novels i could reread without getting tired of and the romance just makes me want to hug the book!
“the suite spot” combines romance with motherhood and job satisfaction as it follows rachel navigating her changing life. i love how it focuses on rachel’s relationship with her daughter without dimming out the sparks she shared with mason. (speaking of mason, he is such a teddy bear once he’s given the chance to open up!) the friendships rachel formed with the rest of the townspeople play an equally important role in this novel. at first, i was worried the introduction of so many other characters would overshadow rachel and mason but that is not the case! now, for the romance… these two lovebirds’ chemistry is undeniable and i admired how they look after each other and don’t rush into things. mason is so good with rachel’s daughter and that’s one of the reasons why i love him so much!
thank you to netgalley and macmillan audio for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review!
This is a quick, light read. If you're a fan of interior design and beer, you would enjoy this! The story was a fun twist on a contemporary romance but I found it to be a bit lacking. I enjoyed the side characters (especially Avery) but found Mason to be a little underdeveloped. I felt like there wasn't as much romantic tension between Rachel and Mason as I would have liked. The beginning of this book was great, the middle was a bit slow and the ending just felt abrupt. I liked it but I didn't love it like I wanted to.
I loved the first book in this series, The Float Plan, so much that it was part of my top books of 2021. When I saw that the author had a companion novel I was so excited. The books are a series but really you can read it them as standalone books. You will miss out on some of the callbacks to the first book.but this story works on its own without really knowing the contents of the first book.
First of all let's talk about the cover. I thought it was perfect it really captures the spirit of the book. Also I loved that each chapter started with a foreign language word that doesn't have a direct English translation. I love finding words like this and will be adding these to my list.
The story was great. I love that the Rachel was plus size and I loved her creative mind. She was always finding interesting ways to decorate and ideas on how to make the hotel even better. I loved that her daughter made friends with the angry cat. I love that Mason made special beer flavours for all the special people in his life. The story really brought me back to growing up in a small town.
I think that Trish Doller is now an auto read author for me. Her stories seem like the right amount of story, romance and self discovery.
The Suite Spot

I received a digital copy of this audiobook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book opens on a trigger warning which I appreciate as sometimes there are some topics one just can’t deal with on a particular day or ever depending on your situation.
Here are my trigger warnings. Single mom/unplanned kiddo/minimally involved dad. Parent abandonment. 1st generation Americans. Minor racism - more reflecting on experience of a character not racism on the page. Divorce. Child death. (In the past) Custody battle. Sexual harassment/assault (no rape).
Own voices representation - Our heroine is indicated to be plus sized. Her mother is a German immigrant. Our hero is half Japanese - his mom is a Japanese immigrant. He has a sibling with an African American spouse.
Steamy though there is some fade to black. Its like the first minute is on the page so there is some beyond pg-13 info but not a lot. So not very steamy but there is some steam.
Some pieces of this felt too easy, the mental/emotional work that needed to be done may well have happened during some of the fade to black moments but not a lot of it was on the page so there were a few things that felt like they may have not been “earned”. I think this could have been remedied by employing alternate narration between the leads.
My other problem with this is that (and let me preface this by saying I’m a mom with anxiety and I have 2 small children) This mom leaves her 3 almost 4 year old asleep in an unfamiliar house on a couch with an unfamiliar cat (I have a cat, love cats but an unknown cat here) and goes outside for a length of time with no baby monitor, no other adults around, no mention of - the windows open so I’ll hear her etc. My anxiety would never let me do this. I’ve got a video monitor on my kiddos while they sleep at all times. Maybe that’s just me but it felt very jarring every time she did something like this.
Anyway. I love a makeover project. There is a considerable amount of shopping and property make over which I always enjoy. This is a new girl in a small town making a home for herself, joining the community and gaining a found family which is generally fun as well. There were many amusing moments. There is beer brewing. There is a lot of fun and atmosphere in this book. There are kids if you’re not a fan of kids in romance books this is not for you. An enjoyable listen. The narrator was excellent.
4/5
This was such a fun listen, i loved how the story unfolded how the romance began and how she gave everything up for her daughter but in the end was right back where she belonged
I was lucky enough to receive the audiobook ARC from Net Galley and Macmillan Audio and I finished it just in time for pub day! I really enjoyed this one ! It is the second book in the Beck sister’s stories. The first one being Float Plan which follows Anna, the Suite Spot follows Rachel. What I love about Trish Doller's books are that the characters are so relatable! They're going through some tough life events. Check out trigger warnings if this is something you need. Our main character Rachel, is a single mom who makes a move for her career, she is plus sized and struggles with anxiety. Mason is a newly divorced brewer and owner of a new hotel, he is Asian-American and living in a small town in the mid-west. Both of these characters have so much representation and relatability. The romance is a slow burn and its great! Rachel’s daughter Maisie is adorable and this book is overall a quick and easy read!
After Rachel is (wrongfully) fired from her job at a fancy hotel in Florida, she takes a chance and accepts a job opportunity at a boutique hotel in Ohio site unseen. She and her daughter Masie make the trip and upon arrival are shocked to learn that the hotel is much more a work in progress than a full functioning business. Mason, the owner, apologizes for misleading her but he was desperate and really thinks Rachel is the perfect fit to make this dream become a reality. Rachel ultimately decides to stay on and oversee the renovations from top to bottom while Mason works on fine tuning his craft beer creations at the on-site brewery. Will these two end up taking a chance on love?
My thoughts:
I have not read Float Plan (the first Becker sisters book) and found that it did not affect my enjoyment of The Suite Spot. I was rooting for Rachel and Mason to make the hotel work and for their friendship to develop into something deeper. The book managed to touch briefly on heavier subjects without getting bogged down by them. Mason's back story broke my heart and I appreciated that he was self aware enough to know he wasn't completely healed/ready to jump into something new on a whim. I liked both Rachel and Mason's family dynamics. It was a sweet book that I read in one sitting. Sign me up for a weekend getaway to their hotel and make sure it's when the local book club is meeting because those gals sound like fun! The ending felt a bit rushed and convenient, but I can't fault that in a romance book.
Thank you to Macmillan audio, St. Martin’s Press. and NetGalley for an advanced listeners copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The audio was well done and I thought that the voices and accents that the narrator brought to the characters besides Rachel were well done. The grief and healing that took place in this book were beautifully handled.
It’s Q&A time!
Q: What’s this romance about?
A: Rachel, a 28-year-old single mom from Miami, loses her job as a boutique hotel concierge and moves to a tiny Lake Erie island in Ohio to help a stranger open a brewery-themed glamping hotel. Naturally the stranger is a moody, handsome, sorta-available man with a past.
Q: Since The Suite Spot is noted as “Beck Sisters #2,” do you have to read “Beck Sisters #1” (Float Plan) first?
A: Nope! I have read Float Plan (and recommend it), but this is truly Rachel’s story and therefore functions as a stand-alone.
Q: Is it any good?
A: It’s truly enjoyable! Rachel is a character that’s easy to root for, and the writing is very engaging. I never lost interest and sailed quickly through the entire thing in a day.
Q: What’s the steam level?
A: Medium-low. There are adult situations, but they’re PG-13-ish.
Q: How’s the audiobook?
A: I loved it! Narrator Sarah Naughton does an excellent job voicing all the characters and accents. She even manages to pull off a toddler without being annoying.
Q: So why not 5 stars?
A: The entire plot-line regarding the opening of the brewery/hotel is utterly unbelievable. Like really eye-roll-worthy. Also, a male boss shagging his female employee doesn’t feel all that comfortable in this day and age. Workplace romances are gonna happen, but there will always be a little ickiness when the objects of affection are a superior and subordinate. Eww.
The Suite Spot by Trish Doller is a fantastic listen. I loved the imagery the author wrote, and the story line. The details were so good! I could envision so many things from the resort in Florida to the brewery in Ohio. The epigraph at chapter beginnings was so wonderful. I loved how that was incorporated into the story. There is hope, love, sacrifice, heartbreak, and redemption in the book. The custody battle was realistic and well done. Finding Home was the most poignant detail I found in the book. Sarah Naughton is perfect narrating this book. She adds the right emotions, and has a great voice. Thank you #NetGalley and #Macmillan Audio for allowing me to listen to this great book.
💁🏻♀️Overall Impression: At first, I didn’t think this would live up to Float Plan, but the further into it I got, the more I liked it.
📖Synopsis: Single mom Rachel loses her job as a hotel manager due to a rich client’s complaint when she takes a chance and moves to an island in Lake Erie to manage a brew hotel with owner/brewer Mason.
💭Thoughts: this was a bit of a slow burn with a slower built (mostly closed door) romance and I liked it more and more with each page. Rachel and Mason both have baggage to work through (Rachel has baby daddy issues and Mason has lost a child and is divorced) and I loved that each had to be ready in their own time before they could be together.
The conflicts in this were much more realistic, although one part of that did make me roll my eyes a bit wanting Rachel to pick up the dang phone before she made a quick decision but that’s ok, none of us are perfect, especially under stress.
I loved the ending and think it all came together so well. I was goofy smiling way too much 🤦🏻♀️.
I did a mix of an eARC and audio and loved both. As always, Sarah Naughton does a fabulous job of narrating.
This book hits shelves today and I definitely recommend it. It follows Float Plan (the other Beck sister’s story) and while you don’t have to read one to read the other, I’d still say you should read them in order.
Thanks so much to @netgalley @stmartinspress and @macmillan.audio for the advanced copy!
The Suite Spot followed the same journey as the Float Plan, but with Anna’s sister, Rachel. In order to find herself, Rachel drives from Florida to Ohio with her daughter, Masie, after accepting a new job at a small hotel in Kelleys Island. Once there, Rachel meets the owner of the brewery hotel, Mason, who tells her that the hotel is not yet done. He has a past of his own that haunts him that has prevented him from completed this project. Rachel and Mason work together to create this hotel into a new combined dream. I loved this part, as an interior designer, I could see the vision that they had. Rachel and Mason start up feelings together and they quickly become the item that the small town is hoping for. This was a quick read that felt warm and fuzzy. Once again, Doller created a rom com that was a pleasure to read. There were many topics explored such as workplace harassment, custody, death, and single parenthood. I loved that some characters carried over from the first book, but many new characters were introduced in this one. Many of them felt real and I quickly became friends with them too while reading. The ending felt rushed, and I wish there was a bit more to the story. If there is a third one to this series, I am curious to where it goes because there are only two Beck sisters. This was a story of taking risks, friendship, family and finding yourself.

“A meaningful, but wordless, exchange between two people who both desire to initiate something but are hesitant to act on it”
Rachel Beck is a single mother living in Florida with her mother and young daughter. Rachel suddenly finds herself unemployed, underwhelmed in her on again/off again relationship with her daughter's father, and looking to make a big change.
Mason Brown has big plans to open a hotel and brewery, if only he can find a Jack of all trades to help him get his business off the ground. & He just might be the man to provide Rachel the exact change she is looking for...over 1000 miles away on an island in Ohio.
Mason is grumpy and reserved. Rachel is hesitant and overwhelmed. But before you know it they are setting aside their reservations and working together to make Mason's dream and Rachel's vision a reality. Although life and loss have made them both hesitant to explore a relationship beyond boss and employee, there just may be something there that is too strong for either of them to ignore.
Kelleys Island is an idyllic setting with a host of residents that almost make you wish you called it home. All of the characters are so diverse and bring a lot to the story. They are all relatable & just felt so real. I love the fact that Mason and Rachel are unapologetically imperfect but seem perfect for each other.
One of my favorite parts are the words + definitions that begin each chapter. So many beautiful phrases. I found myself excited for each upcoming chapter just so I could read them.
This book deals with some heavy topics (trigger warning for sexual abuse, mentions of suicide, and child death) but still manages to stay heartwarming, endearing, and fun from start to finish. A must read! Four stars.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for an audio ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I loved “The Float Plan” and was so excited to be approved for this book. I listened to the audio version and the narrator was excellent, did a great job of not only telling the story but also drawing me in. Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed this one more than “The Float Plan” and highly recommend it to anyone who likes this particular genre.
I needed a low key easy read and this satisfied that need. It was predictable sure, but still cute, fun and entertaining. I want to visit that hotel.
I like to say that I have no heart since I am not usually a romance reader, but Trish Doller’s writing just does something to me. I love how she doesn’t write insta-love and her story building feels so natural. I also love how she’s not afraid to tackle hard topics. Basically I just loved everything about this book!
If you loved her first book, Float Plan, I definitely think you will love this one too. I will be picking up all of her works in the future. She is definitely an auto buy author for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan audio for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this book! I would say that I enjoyed it more than Float Plan. It felt more relatable for me and it was a really quick and easy listen!
I started it last night and planned to listen to it for a little bit and then go to bed, and I just kept listening and finished it before I went to sleep. That tells me that I was really sucked into this story and wanted to keep listening to hear what happened.
