Didn't hate this book but I didn't love it. Interesting story line and it goes back and forth but least it's easy to keep up with what's going on. Tullys husband drove me nuts. Like he got them into that situation and he gets mad? Lol no thanks.
This was such a good story! The narration was great. Lots of characters were mixed in but I thought it was well written and read. I have really enjoyed her last few books!
"The Younger Wife" by Sally Hepworth is a twisty pychological mystery about a family with tons of hidden secrets.
What I loved:
- Plot that makes you keep guessing
- Themes of abuse, addiction, rape, etc., and the resulting negative effects (kleptomania, neurological issues, trust and behavioral issues, etc)
- Short chapters, each told by a well-developed characters
- Terrific narration with British accents
What I didn't love:
- Slow start (things finally picked up about halfway through)
Special thanks to Macmillan Audio for the advanced listener audiobook via the NetGalley app.
3.25 stars.
This is a book that’ll keep you turning the page, that’s for sure. But I was hoping for a lot more intrigue and mystery when it came to the plot & sadly, I was instead pretty underwhelmed by the overall storyline (especially once I got to the ending). I’ve heard amazing things about Sally Hepworth’s other books & I can tell she’s a great storyteller, so I still look forward to reading more of her stuff!
Thank you to NetGalley & Macmillan Audio for providing me with an early copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fast paced domestic drama. The narrator did an excellent job with keeping me engaged. I loved how it opened up with a scandalous wedding with a mysterious narrator. It was fun figuring out who was the mysterious wedding attendee and their relationship to the Aston’s family. It was easy to get hooked on the non stop family drama too. I did not like the ending though. There was so much potential but it just fell short for me.
Thank you to NetGallery and to Macmillan Audio for giving me a copy for my honest review
I thought this book was largely character driven; it did seem that each of the women had WAY too much going on, however, and it was if the author wanted to throw in a bunch of issues (sexual assault, eating disorders, kleptomania, etc.) which bogged things down here and there.
A lot of readers didn't like the ending; I am OK with ambiguous endings, although this one wasn't done as cleverly as some others.
The audiobook was read by four different narrators, including the incomparable Caroline Lee. I appreciate the different voices as sometimes one narrator trying to do different characters tends to fall a little flat for me.
I really wanted to love this book after hearing nothing but great things about this author. It started out so promising and had so much potential…
I struggled with the ending!! I didn’t love it and didn’t like how these characters were portrayed, especially women.
I did not see the end coming in this book, and I love it! This was really well written and the narration was very well done. I love reading books by this author and now I have to go and look for all of her backlog! My favorite part, and it is a bit spoilery, is that they all end up friends in the end! I love that!! Can't wait for her next book, I am definitely here for it!
This book starts off with a sad situation, the wife/mother has dementia. The husband/father has a new young wife. I’ve read a lot of books very similar to that exact thing. However, this book will guide you one way and then pull you in another. This book will also make you feel all different emotions and make you question a lot.
Oh my goodness- I enjoyed this book so much!! The characters were were developed and the story flowed well. I loved the audio version and the narrator was fabulous. Cannot wait to recommend to friends and book groups on Goodreads, Amazon, and Facebook.
Thank you to #Netgalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
i honestly didn't like this as it dragged so much in the middle and the resolution was not satisfactory
I really enjoyed this domestic thriller/family drama from Sally Hepworth. She is a masterful storyteller and an auto read author for me. I love how she weaves the different perspectives as she reveals a little bit more of the truth. Who is a reliable narrator and who is not?
The audio version for this was fantastic with a different narrator for each voice. Trigger warnings, if you have any definitely check that this is ok for you but that is true of most domestic thrillers.
Thank you to the author and Netgalley for my audio copy. I loved it!
Tully and Rachel Aston are each dealing with their mother's decline in health in their own ways. Tully, a kleptomaniac, has been stealing things for years. It gives her a sense of power that she can't get any other way. When her husband tells her that their financial situation has changed, she realizes that she has to change her ways or put her entire family in danger.
Rachel is a successful baker with her own business, but Rachel deals with her mother's health issues by eating her feelings. Which puts her business at risk.
They are both surprised when their father, Stephen, announces that he is in love with another woman, Heather. He will divorce their mother and marry Heather. Heather, who is young enough to be his daughter, never thought that she would find true love, but given her history, she is hyperaware of every move. The longer Heather is with Stephen, the more she realizes that he is not the perfect man she believed him to be. What will happen when Tully and Rachel discover their father is a flawed man?
The Younger Wife was a very compelling read. At first, I thought that Rachel and Tully behaved like spoiled brats. But the deeper I got into the book, the more I realized that their behavior is rooted in more than just their mother's illness. The Younger Wife tackles some pretty difficult topics. Compulsive behavior, eating disorders, mental illness, and domestic abuse. However, when it is all said and done, you will breathe a sigh of relief. - CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS
Bottom Line - Sally Hepworth has written an outstanding novel. While family relations are at the heart of the book, there is so much more to it. You will tear through the pages at breakneck speed.

This domestic drama/suspense book takes place in the point of three narrators, Heather, Tully and Rachel. Heather is the new younger girlfriend of Rachel and Tully's father. One problem - Rachel and Tully's mother is still alive and living in an assisted living facility, still married to Steven, the grown girls' father. Soon, Steven and Heather's new relationship begins to bring up some questions about what may have really happened between Steven and his former wife during their lengthy marriage.
There is lots of drama and suspense in this book - from sexual assault, to domestic abuse, to kleptomania and everything in between. If those are triggers for you, this may not be your book.
I liked how the girls' stories intertwining led to the effect of a unreliable narrator. The reader doesn't know who to believe, and the ending (in the version I read) was ambiguous to many, although I interpreted the story in one particular way, and it was clear to me. I will have to read the new ending to see if I like it better.
I listened to this book on audio, and these ladies did a fantastic job with the narration. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a quick listen to a family drama, domestic suspense. Quick chapters ending in cliffhangers keeps you guessing throughout this book and it is definitely entertaining.

Sally Hepworth is a master storyteller. She is able to craft a story, keeping the reader engaged from beginning to end.
She is the queen of domestic suspense. Although this is not her best work in my opinion, I couldn't wait to get back to the story.
Told from 3 POVs, the audiobooks was perfectly narrated by 3 separate people which always makes for a better experience.
I really enjoyed this psychological family thriller written by Sally Hepworth. She is quickly becoming a favorite author. I loved the family dynamics, and the storylines of what happens to people that suffer from domestic abuse. I really loved the ending too, and the narration was excellent. I want to thank the author, the publisher, and Netgalley for giving me an e-copy of this book, in return for an honest review.
No need to read this review Sally, I would never give you 1 or 2 stars, because I love every single word you write. Holy cow. You reeled me in with your stories several books ago and now I am a superfan reading all your backlist.
This was just fantastic. I read a ton of thrillers and I did not have this one figured out until I read the pivotal scene. I just absolutely adore the way Hepworth writes family dynamics. Wonderful job. If you haven't read anything of hers, go now and grab a book. This one is fantastic if you want to start here.
5 stars for this crazy romp that kept me guessing.
Loved the audio as well. The narrator kept the tension up throughout the story and I loved it.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy. I’ll say what I always say with the audio- I wish the quality was better.
An older heart surgeon with a younger wife. His two daughters don’t know what is going on. There’s lots of stuff secrets. This was a twisty story that I found interesting and kept me guessing. Another good one from Sally Hepworth.
This is a slower burn that was mostly family/domestic drama which I’m not a big fan of. It did get better toward the end when there were some twists and suspense. This was my first book by this author and although I didn’t love this one I will definitely read more of her books.
Sally Hepworth continues to reel me into a complicated and entertaining suspense thriller and her books never let me down with The Younger Wife being no exception. The lead characters all struggle to support each other while enduring their own personal issues such as over eating, over drinking and shoplifting. Long held secrets emerge in everyone's back stories and the twists and turns were non stop and always compelling. This was an excellent fast paced read and I would give it 5 stars...
