I thought based on the synopsis, that this would be a great coming-of-age story, but unfortunately, I'm not sure that I was the right fit for WHO YOU MIGHT BE.
I just never felt connected to or related to any of the characters in the story, and wasn't really sure where the plot was headed. I listened to the audiobook, which was narrated by Aven Shore.
*many thanks to Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for the gifted copy for review
This book was not my cup of tea. The story was OK but I did not find it interesting enough to finish. I think younger readers may enjoy it- I'm old!
Who You Might Be AUDIO by Leigh Gallagher turns out to have been a bad choice for me. It was far to full of teenage angst and repetitiveness. The reader, Aven Shore, sounded like a teen herself, compounding the things I didn’t like. I know it was Gallagher’s first book and inf that instance, Congratulations!
I was invited to listen to a free E-ARC audio of Who You Might Be by Macmillan Audio through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #macmillanaudio #leighgallagher #whoyoumightbe
I really struggled with getting into this book. I tried to listen multiple times but I could not get into it. I unfortunately had to DNF around the 30% mark. The beginning was so slow and I had no interested in sticking with the audiobook.
Sometimes you come across a book that is just not for you. Unfortunately, for me, this is that book.
I love the cover of this one and from the synopsis, I felt sure I was going to like it. A few pages in, I quickly realized that was not the case. The plot line seemed muddied in what the author was attempting to explore in terms of life and where we fit into the universe in relation to those around us and how it ultimately shapes us.
In addition, none of the characters seemed likable or relatable to me, and there were so many trigger warnings, I honestly lost count. I struggled to get through a scene in which one of the characters goes on a rant about how Bob Marley was secretly assassinated because he was really an alien descended from Haile Selassie who apparently was also an alien. My Jamaican husband had a good laugh at this bit. I however, did not.
The thing I ultimately love about books is how the book I may dislike, will be the book my best friend, neighbor, mom, or husband winds up loving. I am sure this book will work for some, however it did not work for me.
Thank you Henry Holt for the physical copy and NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an ALC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
While I really wanted to love Who You Might Be by Leigh N. Gallagher, the story fell short for me. It may have been the narrator or just that I was not in the right mindset for this book. I will try again if possible.
Told in three parts, this story does come together in the end but not how I had imagined. There are multiple narrators which is something I usually like and found to be okay in this book.
Overall, this book felt long and drawn out. I kept going back to the blurb to see why I requested it in the beginning. Perhaps it is not for me but others will enjoy.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to MacMillan Audio for the copy of Who You Might Be by Leigh N Gallagher (debut author) and thoughtfully narrated by Aven Shore. I have reviewed the book elsewhere and noted that this is a powerful well written story, one filled with disconnection and longing and a story that captures the complex loneliness of adolescence blended with the desire to be independent (and then regretting that desire?). It is a strong book but hard to feel engaged with the characters, perhaps because they are sharing such personal thoughts and I struggled to feel a part of their story (the book was very detailed and thoughtful in talking about the lives and thoughts of adolescents in the 90s!).
I think because of the prose and the complex story and details, this works better as book and less an audiobook, for me it was hard to stay present with the audio. That being said, this does not mean it is not wonderfully narrated, Mx Shore does a good job conveying mood, emotion, and tone and I was impressed by her thoughtful narration. For me this is more a book that just wasn't meant to work for me as an audiobook.
I really struggled with this book. It was so slow, and I just couldn’t get into it no matter how hard I tried. It ended up being a DNF for me at 25%
I found this book very hard to follow. I had to push myself to get to the end and I was expecting there to be a huge connection. However, in the beginning I was extremely into what was going on and then that part died off and it turned into a completely different story. It only touched on that part very quickly in the end. I feel very lost after finishing it.
Who You Might Be started out slow for me and I was having a hard time connecting with the characters. This coming-of-age tale did a great job of immersing the reader in complex mixed emotions that are associated with growing up, but I think that perhaps I just wasn't the right audience for this book.
First, I want to thank Netgalley for the opportunity to review the audiobook. I enjoyed the narrator.
I feel I may have missed a very important piece of the story. I'd like to know if the book ever revealed if Cassie ever got reunited with her crazy aunt and also how Judy and Meghan got away from her. Maybe I skipped a chapter. I hope asking this doesn't ruin the story for everyone.
I was very torn with my rating of the book and still am. The best I can honestly rate it is 2.5 stars. There are just too many unanswered questions and loose ends
Not all books are easily reviewed, and Who You Might Be is one of those difficult to evaluate. First, I listened on audio so take that for what it's worth. Given the structure of the tale, told in 3 distinct parts, with different characters in sections 1 and 2, and the 3rd section attempting to intertwine the earlier stories, audio may just not work for this one. It might have been easier had I been able to refer back through the pages when things stopped making sense, but as a listener, that option really doesn't work. And, without sounding too harsh, I'm not sure I want to put that much effort into a book.
The author, Leigh Gallagher, has previously published work in "non traditional formats" so I'm guessing that this first novel is harder to read because the style of meshing stories, traveling in time by decades, and then making the connection and getting the message, is more complicated than many books. Again, as an audio version, it was not easy or fun as a listener.
The narrator, Aven Shore, has a pleasing voice and did a good job voicing the complicated characters. I would absolutely listen to more of her audio books.
Now the hard part as a person who never likes to leave bad reviews is the star rating. As a reader, when a book is 5 stars it's super easy to review and recommend. 1 stars tend to be easy too because honesty does matter. Who You Might Be is neither a 5 or a 1. Is it a 3? Not really, but it's also not a 2. The author is trying something unique, and that isn't a bad thing in a world where formulas for books get overused. I'm going to round up to 3 because I hope Gallagher writes another novel, and I also plan to take a look at her previously published short stories.
Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for allowing me to listen in advance of the June 21, 2022 release date.
12 year old Cassie is trapped in a sad life with her aunt who seems to be experiencing dementia. She sets off to connect with her mother who has many, many issues. The second part of the book follows Caleb as he tries to acclimate to Michigan after a cross country move. Some of the characters were interesting. I tried to get into this book and enjoy it, but I just did not. It was too choppy with the storyline all over the place.
*Huge thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review
Thank you NetGalley for the audioarc of Who You Might Be.
This book is written in 3 parts that are supposed to intertwine, but it was done so poorly with zero explanation. The first part, featuring Judy and Meghan, was actually quite good and I was looking forward to their story. The second part featured Miles and Caleb, and the third was Judy and Caleb.
There are so many loose ends, it was so incredibly boring, and this was not at all for me.
This audiobook is written in three parts, with the first two being completely different and the last one combining some characters from the first and second. The first part held my interest. The second part was very tough to get into and therefore by the time I got to the third part, I had lost much interest (even though part three wasn't bad!). Essentially, the stories boil down to secrets we keep, the trauma surrounding them, and how this may affect us in our later years. I didn't find the book to. be bad and the writing didn't seem bad either, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I'd say it was just average.
Thank you to NetGalley, MacMIllian Audio and the author for this ARC.
Thank you Netgalley and MacMillan Audio for this advance listener copy in exchange for my honest review.
I didn't like this book. I didn't like any aspect of this book. I found it to be boring and the intertwined stories were confusing. It left me with questions that I really didn't want answers to.
The audio was good, but the characters and the writing were not. I hated every character in this book. None of them seemed worthy of any redemption. I think trying to interweave seemingly different story lines just ended up leaving the book jumbled. I had to force myself to finish it.
There is an audience that will like this book, but there just wasn't enough going on for it to be me.
Two stars because I did finish it.
I was not a huge fan of this book. I understand that the author tried to give the reader a thorough back story to what turned out to be her main characters. But, in my opinion, the stories were too disconnected, and the characters just too awful. It was difficult to get to care for the story.
Thank you NetGalley for giving me the chance to listen to, and review this ARC.
Did not finish - this was simply not the book for me. Gave it a 3 star rating because that is the most neutral.
Fully drawn characters with interesting stories makes this an enjoyable read, but shifting narratives might've been better served with multiple narrators, Still, it's a recommended purchase, although it may find more traction in physical form.
I enjoyed how this book was written and the way all of the characters crossed paths and how their choices affected others. It was so different from other books I've read in this genre and I will definitely be looking for more to read from Leigh N. Gallagher.
Thank you to NetGalley, the Publisher and Author for supplying me with an audio copy of this book for my review.
