*received for free from netgalley for honest review* Cute artwork and story! Would be a good quick bedtime book.
I received a free digital audio copy of "Our Planet! There's No Place Like Earth" by Stacy McAnulty and read by Samantha Turret in exchange for an honest review of the title.
Stacy McAnulty's nonfiction works are a children's library staple. With "Our Planet! There's No Place Like Earth," McAnulty continues to fill the collection gaps left by outdated science books. The scope of "Our Planet!" starts with general facts such as Earth's population, distance from the sun, and average temperature. Along the way, vocab words are defined in easy-to-understand phrases. While discussing climate change and humans' impact on the environment, McAnulty's writing maintains an optimistic and playful tone without sacrificing urgency. The balance here is vocalized by Samantha Turret's performance of the text.
The audiobook of "Our Planet!" is underlaid with peppy music one might find in a 1950s advertisement. Keeping David Litchfield's illustrations in mind, this is a good fit. Even with music throughout, Turret's reading is clear, evenly paced, and playfully inflected as the voice of Earth. I recommend this audiobook as a read along to the physical title. Where the character Earth switches between narrative and lists can be confusing to a listener. However, this short audio title can be a fun way to re-experience the print copy in a car ride as a listen-together between caregiver and child.
I would recommend the audiobook of "Our Planet! There's No Place Like Earth" to students who have an interest in space, environmentalism, or meteorology but are intimidated by long texts. For the upper elementary student looking for resources, the pacing of this title is also good for recalling numerical statistics. For the library purchaser, this is one of the most up-to-date children's titles on climate change, human impact, and ways to make a greener Earth at home.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the advanced electronic audio review copy of this wonderful book. Written from the Earth’s point of view, this is a great book about the importance of conservation for mid to upper elementary students. It would also be an amazing read aloud for Earth Day!
I like other books I've read by Stacy McAnulty. I've never listened to picture books as an audiobook. I was very surprised how forward the book was about climate change. This book didn't have the same humor I was expecting based upon reading her other books.
This book written from Earth’s perspective provides a fact based narrative of the earth's relationship with humans. My daughter and myself listened together. I as a teacher I can see it’s use as a read aloud and for use when studying climate and earth sciences. However my daughter who is in the correct age to hear or read this book was not enthusiastic about the audio edition. My assessment would be that this book is best read with either the physical or digital so that the illustrations can aid in children’s attention and entertainment. That being said the audio is pleasant and when used in accompaniment with the illustrations, I imagine it would be quite effective.
Our Planet! There's No Place Like Earth by Stacy McAnulty tells the story of Earth in the Our Universe series. Rich with kid-friendly facts and humor, this book is the perfect story for kids of today. The story parallels the climate crisis of today: humans have accidentally moved Earth's climate change into the fast lane, and she need your help to put on the brakes. Earthlings need Earth, and Earth needs Earthlings, so let’s save Earth together!
This is a great little story about climate change. I listened to this with my 6-year-old twins and they both enjoyed it. We stopped the audio several times to discuss themes or words in the book. We discussed what we could do to stop green house gases. My kids thought the cow toots and burps were hilarious and I found myself laughing out loud as well.
I would be interested in seeing the final print version of the book. There were a couple things I thought were exact repeats from earlier in the book. I don’t know if these were “highlights”, errors, or purposeful. Also, at the beginning of the book, planet Earth aka Planet Awesome says, “I’m home to all the planets in the solar system.” This is not factual and even my children said, “what? Earth isn’t home to other planets.”
Thank you to Netgalley for the audio version of this book. I was very surprised at how many amazing facts were in this book! I learned a lot while listening to this book. The book has a lot of good ideas sprinkled throughout the book on learning and also way to help implement ways to help reduce or reuse what we already have so we can help keep the earth- earth longer.
This book's audio is adorable and super informative on a beginner level. I love that it provides an intro to big topics such as climate change while also talking about why we can live on Earth and not other planets. I hope that the illustrations are as beautiful as the cover, but if the audio is any indication this book will be fantastic and make a great read aloud especially for Earth Day!
I listened to Our Planet! There's No Place Like Earth with my 3 and 7 year olds. It was a bit much for my 3 year old (though she enjoyed it and promptly asked me to make Earth cupcakes afterwards) and it was perfect for my 7 year old. A perfect introduction to our climate crisis and talking about how special our Earth is in terms of temperature, atmosphere, etc. The narrator definitely catered to young listeners which was excellent! My only complaint is the constant music in the background - not a fan when trying to listen to the words.
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for this audio ARC in exchange for review :)
I listened to this with my 4th grader and it was spot on for her level of understanding and coordinating with what she's learned lately in school about our earth.
This audiobook covers how valuable and special our earth is. It's the perfect temperature, our atmosphere protects us, etc. It also warns us of what's happening with global warming in a quick and concise way that is easy for children to understand.
It wraps us giving a few things that we can each do, kids included, to help our earth.
There was constant music in the background, which I don't love in audiobooks. The narrator was cute in how she read the book to the audience which certainly felt like it was for children!
This narration was fantastic!! The narrator stayed engaging, interesting, and fun throughout the book and I believe is the perfect narrator for a children's book. The book itself contains important introductory messaging for children about the Earth and climate change, and the narrators tone helps this book stay light while emphasizing the information being taught. Fantastic!
