"Big Duke Energy" is a collection of novellas by Kerrigan Byrne, Christi Caldwell, Amalie Howard, Janna MacGregor, and Stacy Reid. Each of these novellas centers around a rake and the woman who tames him. My favorite was the one by Amalie Howard. Each one was a quick and easy read.

It was a lot of fun to catch up with characters we’ve previously met in series by each author (except maybe not Stacy Reid’s novella?). I’ve read numerous books by all of these authors except for Kerrigan Byrne and boy, was her story spicy! Yowza! But pirates aren’t really my thing, so I may skip the rest of that series. But what I love about each story in this collection is that when the hero falls for the heroine, he falls hard and instantaneously and unwaveringly. I just love that.

Five stories from five talented romance authors. Each story involves a secondary character-from each author's previous works-getting a second chance at love.

Earl on the Train by Kerrigan Byrne
This story is a second chance at a happy ever after for Sebastian Moncrieff and Veronica Latimer.
It took me a moment to remember their story arc until a certain salacious scene was described; let’s just say that my mind was thoroughly jogged and scandalized! I can only remember bits and pieces about Sebastian’s kidnapping of Veronica in The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo, so I didn't have any residual hard feelings about such scandalous actions on Sebastian’s part when reading this story. Byrne’s writing flows beautifully and her characters leap from the page. It has been a while since I have picked up one of Byrne's books and this was a breath of fresh air. The drama is high, the spice is hot, and this novella is just right for a quick dose of Victorian Rebels.

Wolf of Westmore by Amalie Howard
The taste of revenge was never so sweet as it is in the hands of the Duke of Westmore. Caught between the machinations of her father, the Duke of Tyne, and the vengeful Wolf of Westmore, Lady Jocelyn Capeheart finds the strength to stand up for herself and taker her life, and pleasure, into her own hands. Jocelyn is a firecracker of a heroine; she is kind-hearted, capable of laughing at herself, and going after what she wants. Westmore is dedicated to righting a wrong through revenge upon the Duke of Tyne, but crossing paths with Jocelyn softens his heart and threatens his best laid plans. Watching these two together was a deliciously wicked ride.

Loved and Found by Christi Caldwell
A friends to lovers second chance romance about two people from different social classes. I enjoyed this story, however brief and rushed.

Put Up Your Dukes by Janna MacGregor
What if the man you loved and married chose his profession over you? What if vengeance was his mistress? Amelia and Martin Richmond have been estranged for five years because Amelia is opposed to gossip and the harm it wreaks over peoples lives. Her husband, editor of The Midnight Cryer, is committed to his cause and nothing will change that until the gossip hits too close to home, and Martin’s eye’s open to the realization that nothing is more important than the ones we love. In "Put Up Your Dukes" we get into the logistics of making a marriage work, a trope that I adore. Amelia and Martin might have been estranged, but their passion was incendiary in this enjoyable short story.

Duke of Every Sin by Stacy Reid
The fate of two people is forever connected when a baby appears on a duke’s doorstep.
What unfolds is a lovely story of a duke who needs the unconditional love and forgiveness of a good and kind woman, a woman like Verity.

I gave this one three stars. There was a theme for the most part. I enjoyed the first book by Byrne. It was obviously a part of series and the characters were well formed and I really loved their chemistry. I wasn't really impressed with the one by Caldwell. I mean it was ok but the chemistry seemed to be off and there really wasn't enough time to really go into depth with their history and emotions. The third one by Howard was my favourite one out of the whole book. I loved the Characters and the pacing seemed to be perfect. The steamy scenes were awesome and well thought out as well as the family history and charcters. The fourth one by MacGregor was another one that was just ok. I mean it was fine but I just don't remember much about it. Just the main plot points. Even the last one as I sit here and am writing this is a bit fuzzy in my mind and I just finished it on Thursday 3/10. I can't even remember the main plot points or the characters so completely forgettable .

Overall 4/5 star rating for the anthology as a whole

* Disclaimer: I honestly didn’t think to keep track of CWs so I’m unable to provide a full list

CWs: Mentions of death, mentions of drug addiction, mentions of domestic abuse, mentions of survivors guilt, PTSD (war), child abuse, class difference

The Earl On the Train - 4.5/5

-Enemies to Lovers
-I’m obsessed with you too
-Let’s bone it out

This was a continuance/novella of Kerrigan Byrne’s Victorian Rebels series. The two MCs are introduced in The Duke With the Dragon Tattoo (Book 6) and the events isn’t his novella take place about 1 year after the events of Book 6. I would recommend reading The Duke With the Dragon Tattoo first as there are some spoilers for the book and even for the series a bit. BUT I will say that the novella gives you enough information to read this as a stand-alone.

Overall I absolutely loved this novella, I am obsessed with Kerrigan Byrne’s work and have been anticipating this one for a while. Loved that this was actually pretty low-angst romance wise and there was no real conflict between our MCs. For this being a novella, Byrne did an amazing job of setting up the story and romance for readers. Definitely hoping for another book in the series!

Loved and Found - 3.25/5

-Angsty Romance
-Forbidden Lovers
-Second Chance Romance

I’m not sure if this is part of an ongoing series but I am familiar with Christi Caldwell and I overall enjoyed this novella. This was a second chance romance that included some heavier themes that added quite a bit of angst to the novella as well as a last minute HEA. That said, I generally had a good time with this one but too much angst for ME.

Wolf of Westmore - 3.75/5

- Romeo and Juliet Retelling
- Bachelor Auction
- Virgin Takes Life by the Horns

Amalie Howard surprised me with this one to be honest. This was a lot spicier than I thought it was going to be but I really enjoyed it. This was a Romeo and Juliet retelling with a Red Riding Hood Twist. This is part of an ongoing series and can kind of be read as a stand-alone. To be specific, there were definitely references to events in other books and just about all of the main side-characters seem to be from the main series. I think it would be beneficial to read the previous books but don’t find it absolutely necessary.

This was a fun little novella but there were some scenes that kind of made me feel eh about the novella. Like most of the book flowed real smooth in terms of the romance but there were some parts that felt OTT and a bit out of place.

Put Up Your Dukes - 3.5/5

-Marriage in Crisis
- Mutual Pining

Janna MacGregor is a new author to me and I think this novella was pretty ok. Not sure if this is part of an ongoing series but didn’t feel like there was any missing information while reading. This was a bit of a marriage in crisis but there was no real threat to the marriage either. I liked the characters and the romance but also felt it was pretty neutral. Loved that the MCs were mutually pining but also felt that the drama was a lot and some parts a bit unnecessary. Like there were quite a few scenes that I felt could be solved by a conversation. Thought the chemistry and romance between our MCs was pretty great tho.

Duke of Every Sin - 4/5

- Marriage of Convenience
- Found Family
- Instant Attraction

Stacy Reid did not disappoint with this novella! I’ve read a few of her books and have had such a great time with all of them. I do feel that the synopsis was a bit misleading because the hero and heroine do not meet under the circumstances described, or just not the exact same way I guess. I did love the romance and thought the instant attraction was super believable and smooth. I don’t think this is part of a series because I didn’t see any indications or references to make me think there was more going on. I do think that some parts of the story were a bit ehh but overall I really loved this couple and this novella. Definitely loved seeing the MCs fall in love and when there was a conflict between the two it was resolved REALLY quick and there was no big denial of feelings from either party.

While short stories and novellas aren’t my normal go-to books – the longer the better I believe! – the anthology of stories within Big Duke Energy is just brilliant; I didn’t even realise while reading that the stories were so short, as from page one each individual story gripped me, pulling me into a world that I felt I’d known forever.

The main reason I wanted to read this book was for Sebastian Moncrieff’s story – he had a prominent part in The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo and I was hoping he would get his own story one day, so when Kerrigan Byrne mentioned in an interview he was to be a part of this anthology, I knew I would have to pick up a copy and devour it, even if I didn’t like the other stories. Thankfully this story was just a delicious starter to a delectable main course.

All the other stories in the book were well written by authors I had heard of but I had never actually read their novels before – a mistake on my part that my bank account is now paying heavily for! I read a lot of historical romance and I’m ashamed to say that these authors have passed me by, but I am thankful for the amount of reading material that is now on my kindle.

I wanted to be able to state my favourite story but there is something special in all of them; they kept me riveted from start to finish and that made it too hard to pick an actual favourite. I felt the stories where the characters had a history with each other worked extremely well, as the narrative was already deeply established and that’s why the words were so engaging from page one – I felt like I knew these people from their thoughts and feelings’, and I wanted to know more. Caldwell, Byrne, and especially MacGregor showed this in their writing, and it worked very well, the story flowed and gave their characters more depth.

From what I can gather, each story is a stand-alone but also a part of the authors other works, so while you needn’t have read the other novels in the series, you might like to read them before or after you read this anthology. I know I am!

I had decided before reading the book that I would give a star to each story that I enjoyed, and I’m pleased to say that I give this book 5 stars out of 5. Every story kept me captivated from beginning to end and I felt sad when I’d finished them all that I wanted to read them all over again.

I recommend this book to anyone who already loves these authors as it will not disappoint; the steam, the feels and the love is on a high scale and spills over the pages. I also think it is a brilliant gateway novel into the world of historical romance, if you’ve never read one before but you want to dip your toe in, make sure it is this one!

Loved this anthology. It has various levels of emotion and steam. I’ve previously read 4 of the 5 authors work and will read more of the one I was newly introduced to.

I loved Earl on the Train and had been looking forward to Sebastian’s story since Duke with a Dragon Tattoo. There was a good balance of steam and emotion.

I’m normally not a huge fan of Christi Caldwell’s work but loved Loved and Found. The emotion and storyline in this one was excellent.

The Wolf of Westmore was super steamy but light for me on the feelings it evoked. The sex scenes were 🔥

Put Up Your Dukes was my least favorite of the stories. I enjoyed it but it has a very unlikeable hero in it and I struggled to really get behind their relationship. He does give good grovel though and the steam also helped.

Duke of Every Sin was very sad and very sweet. A good balance of steam and emotion.

Overall I’d read all of these authors works again and I would re read this anthology. I am normally not a fan of novellas but they did an excellent job with storylines, steam and feels. 4 stars from me.

Anthologies are either an all in win or a hit or miss for me. This combination of authors combined with how well these stories fit into worlds that we have already visited made it a big hit in my eyes. There are definitely stand outs, but overall I devoured this book and these stories one at a time and had so much fun reading it.

Great collection of novellas from our favorite authors. It's nice to follow up with side characters we've met before and learn more about their love stories. It's also nice to read a few novella-length stories in between full-length novels.

This collection of short stories was, for me, all over the shop in terms of enjoyment. Individually each story ranged from “meh” to “wow,” though overall it was a fun read that certainly scratches the romance tropes itch in bite-sized tales

THE EARL ON THE TRAIN by Kerrigan Byrne- This story was well written, but just didn't do it for me. Much angst and exposition is spent on the tragic shared past of our leading couple (and maybe that means more if you have read more of the originating series) for a short story to really feel like it has done anything past “people acting completely out of character because…love?”

LOVED AND FOUND: Christi Caldwell - This one was a bit better, in that the “miscommunications via meddling parents” trope holds up and serves to shorthand the couple succumbing to seeming insta-love/lust. Much better as a stand alone and has inspired me to look at more by Christie Caldwell (whom I have, somehow, not read before).

THE WOLF OF WESTMORE by Amalie Howard- Now we are talking. Protagonist actually acting on her desires while getting her money’s worth (and then some!). A fun mix of “feuding families,” “hidden identity” and “marriage of convenience” make this short story my favorite in the mix. Granted I have read the preceding books in this series, so that may help.

PUT UP YOUR DUKES by Janna MacGregor - A real mixed bag on this story. Interesting backstory, romances that feature already partnered people finding their way back to each other is a fun twist on the romance tropes. A protagonist who is doing something that doesn't center romance (this one might even drag itself over the Bechdel Test line) is pretty neat. However, the entire resolution reads less as character growth and more as everyone just acting completely out of character.

DUKE OF EVERY SIN by Stacy Reid- Eh. Marriage of convenience with emotionally stunted Duke haunted by his tragic past. A nice HEA with solid resolution, but “man who needs to get his feelings sorted out like an adult is saved by a beautiful ingenue who does all the emotional labor for him” is just losing its appeal for me. Personal preference on that one since it hits many great tropes and is a well done short story otherwise.

Overall, I would still recommend the collection since my critiques are more issues of personal preferences versus the writing being subpar. Everyone’s tastes differ and these snack-sized stories are a good time.

5 Deliciously delightful stars for Put Up Your Dukes by my favorite Janna MacGregor! This was an intriguing short story about one who I always thought was unlikable and truly vile. But he became irresistibly heroic and his love story was sigh inducing. His wife was courageous and kind, daring to stick to her morals at a time when such behavior wasn't fashionable. These two wounded hearts come together by unexpected means. Witty banter and heartfelt emotions are awaiting you in this unputdownable tale! I loved this! It refreshed my heart and gave me something to swoon over. Janna MacGregor is an absolute treasure!

This is one of the best anthologies I've read from some of the best there is in the regency romance business. Steamy, sensual, sexy and passionate happily ever afters.

THE EARL ON THE TRAIN by Kerrigan Byrne
Loved every page, a villain in need of redemption and a woman in need of passion. This is a gorgeous well paced passionate story where Sebastian and Veronica find their chance at love and don't let go.

LOVED AND FOUND by Christi Caldwell
I enjoyed reading this short romance and truly felt part of Thaddeus and Edie's wonderful second chance at love. Beautifully written, a love lost and found again to last a lifetime.

THE WOLF OF WESTMORE by Amalie Howard
This was so good and I adored every page of this scintillating romance, beautifully written and well paced. I wanted more. Wulfric and Jocelyn are formidable and passionate characters, their chemistry, attraction, desire, love, all of it leapt from the pages.

PUT UP YOUR DUKES by Janna MacGregor
Captivating, sexy and passionate story. Martin and Amelia don't have an easy love story with a huge roadblock in between but they fight hard to find their way back to love. This was an estrangement with benefits but the best part was their journey to happily ever after.

DUKE OF EVERY SIN by Stacy Reid
Redemption leads to love in this gorgeous sensual romance. Ethan and Verity are wonderful and strong willed characters and I fell in love with their banter and romance from the first page.

This is a fun collection of stories featuring secondary characters from other books who deserve their moment in the sunshine.

My favourites were Amalie Howard's 'Wolf of Westmore', then The Earl on the Train (Kerrigan Byrne) and finally Stacey Reid's Duke of Every Sin even though its frustrating me that I don't know which of her books either the Duke or Verity appeared in!

All five stories were enjoyable, I just particularly liked the above three.

I was interested in this book since I had only read two of the Authors, Kerrigan Byrne (who I love) and Janna MacGregor, and I have the other three on my TBR pile.

My personal favorite was the Stacy Reid story, because I felt it had more of a actual story, where some of the tales seemed to just be about an excuse for hot sex scenes (which is fine if that's what you are looking for). My next favorite was Kerrigan Byrne, who is always great. The other three tales were just not in my interest level, they were fine, just not what I want to read.

This collection definitely has something for everyone!

Thank you to the Publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read and honestly review this ARC.

Big Duke Energy is a historical romance anthology featuring new stories for beloved secondary characters that have been granted their second chances at long-awaited HEAs. I had read from all 5 authors before and had a fun time with each of their novellas in this anthology!

The Earl on the Train by Kerrigan Byrne: this is the novella I was looking forward to the most as it is part of the Victorian Rebels series (my fav KB series). This is the long-awaited romance between Sebastian Moncrieff, former pirate, and Veronica Weatherstroke, a widowed Countess. Sebastian and Veronica’s romance was first hinted at in The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo (Victorian Rebels book 6). This novella takes place after the events that went down in that book. Sebastian boards a train where he plans to kill a man on-board but ends up running into Veronica, who is chaperone to said man’s daughter. This was a very quick romp on the train novella, but I do wish we got more with this couple.

Loved and Found by Christi Caldwell: this was a second chance romance between Thaddeus and Lady Edith “Edie”. They first met as children when he was just 10-years-old, he was the son of a bricklayer and worker under a local builder and she was the daughter of a Duke. Edie is now a widowed Marchioness and after snow hits, she ends up crashing at his place. He’s back from battle, she’s widowed now, the former lovers reunite, enjoy a snowball fight, and have a delightful reunion.

The Wolf of Westmore by Amalie Howard: I had so much fun with this one! Lady Jocelyn Capeheart, the daughter of a Duke, spends some scandalously delicious time with her father’s enemy, Wulfric Bane, the Duke of Westmore. Wulfric, known as the “Duke of Bad Decisions” is co-owner of sultry club The Silver Scythe where he and Jocelyn (in masked disguise) spend a passionate night together. The Duke of Beswick (The Beast of Beswick) and Marquess of Roth (The Rakehell of Roth) both make appearances in this novella and are friends of the hero.

Put Up Your Dukes by Janna MacGregor: this was a really lovely marriage-in-trouble novella. Amelia Richmond has been estranged from her husband and living separately for 5 years. Her husband is the owner and editor of the most successful gossip paper in London and Amelia has never been a fan of his paper, after coming to blows over what he prints early on into their marriage she left. While they seem to be unable to stand one another all week, every Wednesday the couple spends the evening together and can’t keep their hands off one another.

Duke of Every Sin by Stacy Reid: marriage of convenience novella between Ethan Benedict, Duke of Bainbridge, and Lady Verity Stanton, the disgraced daughter of an Earl. After her sister abandons her 3-month-old baby Thomas on the Duke’s doorstep (the Duke’s late best friend was the baby’s father), Verity is determined to get back her nephew. But Ethan sees it as a chance to make things right after the death of his friend and after telling Verity that her nephew is not leaving, he instead offers her a marriage of convenience so they can take care of Thomas together.

Thank you to the publisher (Oliver Heber Books, XPresso Tours) for an e-ARC via NetGalley. All thoughts in this honest review are my own. Big Duke Energy has a publish date of March 29, 2022.

These authors and these stories are just what I needed. The romance. The laughs and the tears. The happily ever afters was just the cure for the funk I have been in. This is just a compilation that everyone who enjoys romance especially regency needs to read.

5 stars

An excellent Anthology. Often in a collection of stories there's a couple of duds but not this one, all passionate tales. Perhaps not for the reader who likes a clean story. There's lots of graphic sexual positions and intriguing dilemnas. I'd been hoping to find out what happens to Sebastian (Kerrigan's submission)

I have no problem heartily recommending this read. Many thanks for the ARC

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Earl on the Train by Kerrigan Byrne: 5 freaking well deserved stars! I have honestly been bugging Kerrigan like crazy on social media to write Sebastian's story for so long. I am sure I have been annoying, but it was SO worth it. I love Sebastian. He is a dangerously handsome pirate who normally only cares for himself until he meets Veronica Weatherstoke. Too bad she can't stand him and thinks he is vile, but maybe just maybe he can redeem himself? He did to me, but I have always been a Sebastian stan. I loved the chemistry between him and Veronica and how their relationship evolved. It was just perfect to me.

Loved and Found by Christi Caldwell: 3 1/2 stars. I did like this one, but it felt a little bit awkward to me. I also am not a big fan of the trope "I was married for so many years, and didn't get pregnant. I can't have kids so now I will martyr myself and my happiness and leave him because he deserves a family". Just something about it frustrates me because women or can't or don't want kids can't be in love and live a happy and fulfilling life? Full stop. They can, and they deserve their man.

The Wolf of Westmore by Amalie Howard: Another freaking 5 star read in this anthology. Amalie really knocked it out of the park with this novella. It was jam packed with action, feels, and smoking hot chemistry. Lots of romance and surprises that kept me up late into the night reading. It's really a tie between her and Kerrigan's novella for the best one in this anthology because they were just ugh "chef's kiss" perfect.

Put Up Your Dukes by Janna Macgregor: 3 stars. I feel like I have suffered from not reading all of the previous books in the Cavensham series before reading this because there was a lot of backstory that I was missing. It's probably because of this that I didn't connect to this story as much as the others or the main characters. Just some of the things they did seemed goofy to me. I am sorry, I couldn't be sleeping with my husband one day a week for five years and not one of them will budge or compromise to make things work. I wanted to just scream at them a little bit. I found their relationship to not be super believable to me. One thing I do love about Janna, is that she knows real romance and she can make me feel like her characters do truly love each other. Sadly, sometimes though it comes across more telling than showing which happened in this novella. I just wanted to feel a little bit more fire and passion between the leads. Yeah, the sex was there but was there true intimacy?

Duke of Every Sin by Stacy Reid: 4 stars. I thought this one was a super sweet story about taking charge of your own life, making your own decisions, and finding and making your own family not just the one you were born into. I am sorry though, Ethan isn't nearly as bad as he seemed to be in the beginning. He is a big sweetheart, but didn't know how to let people in because he believes his decisions really hurt the people he loved and cared about. I was so happy to watch Verity forgive him his mistakes, and teach him how to forgive himself for those mistakes as well. Just because we are human, and make mistakes doesn't mean that we are less deserving of love. His and Verity's love healed and transformed him, and if that isn't the best version of love then I don't know what is.

I think ya'll should read this book.
