I read this specifically for the stories by Amalie Howard and Stacy Reid, both of whom I love. THE WOLF OF WESTMORE by Amalie Howard features a character from her Everleigh Sisters series that I have been intrigued by since he first appeared. The Duke of Westmore is an interesting side character in the other two books and I had high hopes for his story. It's a Romeo and Juliet tale and had a lot of elements that I love in Amalie Howard's writing style but it really needed to be a full length book to do the story justice. I was left wanting more backstory about Westmore and his hatred for Jocelyn's father, as well as more of Jocelyn's history as we get very little in the way of her relationship with her parents other than that they majorly suck. Overall it was worth the read.
DUKE OF EVERY SIN by Stacy Reid, while I enjoyed it, was not up to the author's usually high writing standards. Again, I found myself wishing it had been a full novel so that I could have more insight into the characters. This may be my own fault, as I believe all the stories in the anthology are about side characters as I obviously have not read the series that the Duke of Bainbridge is a part of. Still, it was a decent read.
This book was very refreshing! Very different then what I have read recently. I enjoyed the mix of the from the different authors . It had a wonderful steamy romance.
This is a collection of stories by 5 of the top authors in the historical fiction genre. And this book shows why they deserve this reputation.
Usually I find novellas incomplete. They only tell apart of a story or pick up in the middle of a story. But all 5 of these stories told complete stories from begging to end. They were all great.
I did have my favorites. Kerrigan Byrne's starts off the book with the story of two characters you have met in a previous series. It was one of my favorites and a great way to start off the book.
The other book I loved was Amalie Howard. Again another story that ties in with her previous series. I thought Lady Jocelyn was a great strong minded Heroine, determined to set her own future. I have read Amalie's books from the beginning and look forward to the next.
But I thought all 5 authors deserved 5 stars.
But this book. You will not be disappointed.
I want to thank Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book.
THE EARL ON THE TRAIN by Kerrigan Byrne
5 stars
Sebastian and Veronica met in a unconventional reunion of sorts. Learning more about Sebastian was interesting as well as who is Veronica, the only women he'd do anything for. I'm glad we finally got another Victorian Rebel story especially with Sebastian. I just wished it was longer, but I really enjoyed it.

THE EARL ON THE TRAIN by Kerrigan Byrne - 5 Stars!
Sebastian Moncrieff gets his redemption story alongside the woman he once kidnapped, Veronica. Sebastian is no longer the pirate who used violence to get what he wants, not he as a rich Earl that uses his sit in parliament to get what he wants. But he has one last job to finish before he can be a "respectable" Earl, and that is killing a human trafficker. Veronica just happens to be on the same train as the man, she is helping his daughter and wife run away from him. The sparks that once we're there, are rekindled one night. Sebastian decides to help Veronica and then professes his love for her.
I loved that Sebastian wasn't an emotionally constipated hero, but rather forward on his love for Veronica. I am also glad that she got her HEA after all the emotional and physical abuse she endured at the hand of her late husband.
LOVED AND FOUND: Christi Caldwell - 4 Stars!
Thaddeus and Edith were childhood friends who became lovers. Since he was born in the rookies and was the son of a bricklayer and she was the daughter of a Duke, they were separated. To save his life and that of his family, Edith asked her father for a military commission for Thaddeus and recognition of his brothers building business in exchange, she would marry the old marquess her father has chosen for her. A decade later, Thaddeus is back on English soil, a man of considerate wealth, for his brother's wedding. There he stumbles upon an intruder in his residence, the intruder is no other than Edith who has just suffered an accident.
Thaddeus and Edith finally have the talk, where each one voices their truth and what they hope for the future. I felt Edith was a really depressed character, and seeing Thaddeus brought back a lot of longing and happy memories.
THE WOLF OF WESTMORE by Amalie Howard - 5 Stars
Wulfric Bane, a sinful Duke, and part-owner of a gaming hell (a sexual dungeon) is actuated to a mysterious lady in red. During their passionate night, Westmore finds a connection for her like no other. As the days turn into weeks, he can't get her out of his mind and finds himself thinking about her constantly. One faithful night, he finds himself on a balcony alongside the daughter of his sworn enemy. As he soon realizes that the mysterious woman and his enemy's daughters are one and the same. Jocelyn is tired of being used as an object, she will marry whomever her father dictates, but her virginity is hers to give away. Who does she pick? she picks the most Dangerous Duke in London.
I feel like it was a retelling of a BDSM Romeo and Juliet. But I was incredibly happy to see the Duke of Beswick, whom I absolutely love! and of course, him sharing his jokes at totally inappropriate moments.
PUT UP YOUR DUKES by Janna MacGregor - 3 Stars
An owner of a scandalous newspaper has been separated from his wife for 5 years, but she visits him every Wednesday. The society peers come to her when they know that her husband will print something about them, so she can intervene and make sure that the dirty laundry isn't aired out.
I guess I just didn't like this one. I found Amelia to be a mouse and Martin to be a little bit of a jerk.
DUKE OF EVERY SIN by Stacy Reid - 5 Stars
Ethan, Duke of Sin, in every aspect. In a couple of weeks, his whole life was shifted on its axis - he lost his best friend to an accident, he was injured and then his father passed away - making him the new duke. Two years later, a woman left a baby on his doorstep and one passionate aunt tried to take the babe away from him. But he makes an offer for the lady, to become his wife and mother to the little baby. Verity, once a Lady and daughter of an Earl, was disowned by her family when she decided to run away with her pregnant sister. Having taken care of baby Thomas since he was born, she will do anything to make sure the Duke of Sin is responsible for Thomas. She accepts the marriage proposal, soon is no longer marriage of convenience - they can't get enough of each other and Ethan sees her as his salvation. Their love blossoms and so those their little family of adoptive children.
I loved Ethan, an individual that blames himself for the death of his friends, turns to Verity for pleasure, love, and finally peace and happiness. Verity is a straight forwards lady who takes no crap from anyone - she loves Artie, Thomas, and Ethan with equal measure.
I received a free copy from NetGalley and this is my freely given opinion.
I knew I wanted to read this anthology the moment I saw it for pre-order because it has a stellar grouping of authors that I have read and loved in the past contributing to it. All of these are new stories and what I did not realize until I started to read was that they involved characters that have shown up in previous stories/series by these authors and what were essentially background or secondary characters are now getting their own stories. What a great idea - there have been many a secondary character or couple that I would have loved to have found out more about.
The Earl on the Train - Kerrigan Byrne - Sebastian Moncrieff and Veronica Latimer encountered each other before in Victorian Rebels, where he was a pirate and kidnapped her and her sister in law in the Duke with the Dragon Tattoo. He has recently come into an Earldom, but is on the train to assassinate a foe. Veronica is a widowed countess, on board to help friends in an untenable situation. They were always attracted to each other, but never enacted on it until they meet again. It is rather dark, angsty, sexy, and shades of Oriental Express-intrigue. I have not read the series this was birthed from, but it is definitely on my to-read list and has moved up that list rapidly!
Loved and Found - Christie Caldwell - Edith, a daughter of a duke and a widowed marchioness is stranded in an abandoned house after a carriage accident. The last thing she expects is to run into her lost childhood friend and former lover Thaddeus. He disappeared from her life after he felt she betrayed him. But fate hands them a chance to clear the air and find love again. Edith is the sister of Crispin, from from His Duchess for a Day (the Heart of a Scandal) and Thaddeus is the brother to Martin, from It Happened One Winter (Scandalous Affairs).
Put Up Your Dukes - Janna MacGregor -Martin Richmond, the editor of the Midnight Cryer, and his wife Amelia have been living apart for years. She could not tolerate his work publishing salacious gossip, and left him... except for the fact that she still loves him and they still meet every Wednesday. Martin loves her as well, but does not want to give up his successful business. However, he will do what he can to convince her to come back to him. We some some characters that were from the Brides of Caversham.
The Wolf of Westmore - Amalie Howard - Wulfric, the Duke of Westmore, is the business partner of the Marquess of Roth and friend to the Duke of Beswick, from the Everleigh sisters. Jocelyn is the daughter of a neighbour he has a feud with and she was also the best friend of Roth's deceased sister. She wants to escape a future of being married off to an old lech to add to her fathers holdings, and Wulf wants revenge on her father. Again, a dark, angsty path to love and redemption.
The Duke of Every Sin - Stacy Reid - Ethan, the Duke of Bainbridge, has been living isolated for years, ridden by guilt and regret after an accident scars him and kills his best friend. One day, a baby is abandoned on his doorstep, and he sees him as his road to redemption. Verity abandoned her life as a wealthy debutante to support her sister, who was abandoned by her family for becoming pregnant. Her sister suddenly decides to abandon the child with the duke to free them both, but Verity cannot stand losing her nephew. Ethan proposes a marriage of convenience for Verity to still have access to the baby, and he can have a mother and caregiver for him. Verity agrees, so long as she can have children too. I have read and enjoyed many Stacy Reid stories, but for the life of me, I cannot remember these characters and which series or stories they are linked with.
Regardless that they are secondary characters linked with other stories, I found they could be read and enjoyed on their own. They were all very passionate, exciting, sexy, and emotionally satisfying short stories that fit a lot of story into small packages. I devoured each of them like fresh baked cookies out of the oven, with a hot cup of coffee. Thoroughly, decadently enjoyable, and I just want more. I absolutely want to go back and read those other series these stories are involved with and reread those that I have read previously.
5 stars out of 5.
This anthology is full of amazing stories from all of my favorite authors. All the couples in these stories have magnetic chemistry with each other, and you definitely are on the edge of your seat waiting for them to get there HEA.
Some stories are a bit sweeter.. Like the story of childhood sweetheats who were seperated by some not so well meaning parents, and reunite years later during a snowstorm.. Some are a bit more action packed like the ex-pirate who has decided to take matters into his own hands when it comes to some very bad men.. Until climbing on the outside of a train to get his quarry discovers the woman he happened to have kidnapped years ago and hasn't been able to get out of his mind..
Each story is amazing in different ways, but they all have one thing in common.. The toe-curling, volcanic eruption level of steam... that might have had me wanting to fan myself as I tried to read this during some down time at work..
I can't wait to see what all of these authors come out with next, and continue to read to read all of their backlisted books!
A wonderful collection by some of the biggest historical romance writers. :) I haven't read books by all the authors here before but it's a terrific introduction. I can honestly say that all the 5 stories are romantic, fun, suspenseful and exciting. All the heroines and hero are likable and you want them to end up together. A terrific collection!
Thanks to the publisher for the arc.
There is nothing better than reading romances from authors at the absolute top of their game, especially Kerrigan Byrne, Stacy Reid, and Amalie Howard, who happen to have written my favorite novellas of this anthology. But that isn't to take anything away from the other authors as well, but having read other books by my favorites, it did help to connect characters and events that are mentioned.
Kerrigan Byrne always excels in writing stories about wounded heroes/heroines and how they start to heal from their traumas with each other. It was so gratifying to pick back up with Sebastian and Veronica after their secondary story in another of her novels. I always hoped that we would get their story and once we did, it did not disappoint! Sebastian is a former pirate, now an earl (though he loathes it) and Veronica is making her way on her own in the world. Their shared history and their hopes for the future made this novella sing.
Loved and Found also has a special place in my heart, as it follows a couple who were separated because of the plotting of her parents and his own pride when he returns. The story was equal parts sweet and devastating and while I hadn't read the books these two were mentioned in before, I'm glad to have been introduced to them in this novella.
The Wolf of Westmore was fantastic, combining the best parts of The Beast of Beswick and The Rakehell of Roth, and throwing in a sultry Romeo and Juliet story to boot. My favorite part was all three heroes coming together to talk about how insane their wives would find them committing to a duel.
Put Up Your Dukes was sadly my least favorite story, mostly because I wasn't super fond of either the hero or the heroine. The hero writes a gossip column and refuses to give it up even after five years of living apart from his wife, and his wife is so forgiving that she seems to accept everyone's apologies even after they've gravely wronged them. It wasn't bad by any means, but it just didn't quite hit for me.
Duke of Every Sin was a lot of fun, though I think it probably could have benefitted from being an entire book. That being said, I really loved reading this love story between two people who feel immense guilt as they work to raise a son together.
