A good primer for a well-weeded animal section. This is more a reference resource than a pick for a cat fancier, but serves it purpose very well.
Princess Fuzzypants here: As a Maine Coon, I am well suited to read and review a book about cats. While I am sure you can guess which breed is my favourite, you do not need to be a genius to read this book. It is well written for the young but not so young reader and describes many of the more important breeds in alphabetical order. I did think it a bit strange to put calicos and tabbies in their own chapters. But they did explain that they are just two types of cat fur and not different breeds.
Each segment goes over the history of the breed, some going way, way back and some fairly recent developments. It goes into our characteristics and our purrsonalities. It even speaks to what kind of mother we make and what to expect from our kits. It also talks about where we would fit best and the kind of humans we should adopt. Because you do know: we kitties are the ones who choose.
I read the book as a Kindle ARC. I think it would be even better in printed form where you could go back and forth at will. It would make a decent reference book too. With no bias involved, I will give it five purrs and two paws up.
As a parent, teacher, and cat lover myself, I definitely recommend this book! For at least 100 breeds of cats, there is information provided about their appearance, behavior, and breed history. The information is provided in a way that is user-friendly to kids but would also be considered higher-level for certain ages. And the pictures! The pictures are beautiful!
I am no longer in a classroom that needs non-fiction books, but if I was, I would purchase this book for my classroom. My son recently completed a report on cats and I wish that we had had this book at the time. Even so, this book is already on my “to buy”list because we both adore cats.
Thank you for this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!
A fun and informative guide to cats - cute photos interspersed with plenty of knowledge about any breed you can think of means this guide will be for anyone - whether they want the facts or just to see adorable kittens. It seems incredibly comprehensive - many cats in there I had never even heard of! Already added it to our Future Releases list for August!
Thank you to the publisher, author/photographer, and NG for a copy of this book in exchange for honest feedback. I love cats and have had plenty pet cats. This is so cute of an idea for a kid's guide to owning a pet cat. There are plenty of chapters full of information ranging from types of cats and their personalities/qualities, cat behavior and how to understand it, etc. It is full of information and graphics to accompany. Cute idea.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and author for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC for free. All opinions are my own.
Oh my goodness! This book is adorable and has my cat lady heart exploding with joy. This book is perfect for cat lovers or animal lovers in general. It shows several types of cats and explains what they look like, their behavior, information about their kittens, and the history of that breed. It includes adorable pictures of each cat breed and their kittens. My favorites are the beautiful Birman kitty, the Maine Coon which are large and gorgeous, and the Siberian. And special shout out to the adorable munchkin kitty which are described as having "short legs and thick bodies" which I can definitely relate to. :)
Another thing I really like about this book is the cat care list in the back. It explains what you need to properly take care of a cat and explains that they need frequent vet visits to keep them healthy and anyone that wants a cat should do research before getting one so you can get one that will match your lifestyle. So many people get kittens because they are cute and then abandon them when they are older and need different care. This causes shelters to be overrun by cats every year and unfortunately makes it to where a lot of cats don't get to live the long life they deserve.
Please take care of your pets and get them fixed to help control the pet population.
This book provides adequate and easily understandable information about cats. I loved knowing more about cats and their different breeds. There's a little bit of history alongside each breeds' descriptions that is much appreciated.
Interesting facts about a variety of various cat breeds with such amazing pictures! Sure to please kitty fans!

Disclosure: I LOVE CATS! The Genius Kids' Guide to Cats is a lovely collection of cat photos and info. Info on each of the 45 cat breeds highlighted in the book is broken down into: history, appearance, behavior, and kittens. Even as an adult who has always had cats, I learned a lot. I think my black cat is a Bombay based on the info in this book. I also have a calico, which I knew about. This book is for kids, however, it is not for young kids, I'd say late elementary to middle school ideally. The Genius Kids' Guide to Cats is chock full of info for any type of report a child may need to complete- or for just a child (or adult) who loves cats!
I loved this book! The photos were wonderful. The descriptions were thorough but age appropriate. I found myself looking to find my three cats to try and determine their origins. This book will serve as a great reference source for research papers or it could just be a very interesting read. I highly recommend it. I plan on showing it to my two grandsons.
Growing up, we always had cats, so this book was the perfect read for me!
This book is divided into four parts: breed history, appearance, behavior, and kittens.
Cats have a special place in my heart. Cat breeds aren’t as important as dog breeds; we rarely ask a cat owner what breed their cat is—at least I’ve never gotten that question. It’s usually the dog owners who get that question.
But this book got me interested in different breeds of cats. I’ve known the most known cat breeds such as Norwegian forest cat, persian, siamese, sphynx, and siberian.
A friend of mine introduced me to maine coon, an adorable and loves attention type of cat. Still don’t know my two cats breed, but it doesn’t matter.
If you want to learn more about different types of cats, or what kind of breed cat you want, or are in general curious about cats and/or loves cats, then this is the book for you!
Thank you to NetGalley and North Start Editions for my copy of The Genius Kid's Guide to Cats by Merriam Garcia in exchange for an honest review. It publishes August 9, 2022.
What a fun book! I think this would make an excellent gift for any kid who enjoys cats. Full of beautiful pictures and educational bits to enrich one's knowledge about their favorite furry felines!
The genius' kid's guide to cats is pawstively purrfect. I read the dog one before this, and something this one had that the dog one didn't is a section on kittens for each type of cat breed! They also went in alphabetical order which I like better, it makes searching for a specific breed easier. I don't like cats as much as dogs but I did like this cat guide as much! The cats are all super cute, especially the kittens. My heart was melting. There's also a lot of good information on how cats got domesticated, their breed history and behavior. My only compliant is there wasn't more information on the Sphinx, which is my favorite cat! I also found the Siberian and Russian Blue cats very cute too. Enjoyable for all ages and all cat lovers!
