Marisa and Brit are the last two survivors in the Stockton family. Sisters who look after each other and take care of each other. When Brit was fifteen her mother died leaving her to take on the role of mother hen. Marisa’s the sister who invited trouble into their family since the day she was born. Drugs and alcohol have been her crutch since her mothers death and then again after Clare died. Brit’s been there every step of the way caring for Marisa. Marisa knew it was hard for Brit to take on adult responsibilities at fifteen, but she appreciated her.
Fourteen years ago Clare was killed. Her death has haunted Marisa. Now that she’s sober she has a clear head. Although, two months ago an accident has caused gaps in her memories. She’s never given up on finding out the truth about her sister Clare. Marisa works with the detective who kept Clare’s case semi open. As a photographer Marisa photographed photos of the scene where Clare’s body was found. Using junior detective skills Marisa pieces together the past with the present.
Mary Burton used multiple points of views to voice this character driven story where everyone lies. It takes Marisa digging into the past to unbury the truth. It’s a fast pace story with interesting characters. The secrets and lies seem inconsequential but when compounded with truths the unveiling is most rewarding. I found it to be a quick and easy read. Took me two days to complete. The chapters transition smoothly from one point of view to the next.
Marissa's twin sister was murdered 14 years ago. Marissa went through some really rough times since then but never gave up trying to find the murderer. As she digs deeper, she finds out facts she never knew, trusted people she shouldn't have.
This is a very interesting story, one that was very hard to out down. I personally didn't want it to end. More please!
Very well written and so worth the time to read.

A very revealing and layered five-star read. I have read and adored this author work before, but this had a different feel to it, and I loved the new feel, it was refreshing. I love the way that this story was told, the gaps and the hints drip feed the undertow to us in a way that feels gripping and means you can’t put it down as you need to know what happens next, what really happened and how its linked. Marisa was a complex character that tells you her story, she makes you wonder and leaves you wondering what is really happening. This is a story that will hook you and you wont be able to put it down until you have finished.
Mary burton is one of my favorite authors but this book was not one of my favorites by her. I am not a fan of books that jump from each chapter being a different character. To me the storyline does not flow but is disjointed. I liked the story but wish it was more fluid for me. But, I know others who like this type of book though
Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by Author and Publisher via NetGalley in return for a fair and honest review.
Another brilliant Mary Burton book! This standalone thriller keeps you guessing as you follow along with Marisa. The twists and turns and Marisa’s personal struggles keep the action going. Like all of Mary’s books it is an engaging and consuming read!
This thriller did a good job of leaving a trail of breadcrumbs that steadily built tension from early on in the book. The more I read and got into the story the more I wanted to keep reading to solve the mystery.
I don't want to give away the plot, but will say that the author kept me guessing even as more of the secrets were revealed. All in all an entertaining read!
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Montlake and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Fast-paced, thrills galore! It’ll be hard to put down so you’ll want to read it all at once.
Marissa Stockton has moved on from the murder of her twin sister Clare fourteen years ago. After a car crash that has erased the memory of the last ten days, she starts to have dreams of Clare and nightmares of the car crash. As she tries to find out what happened to Clare and the cause of the crash, she encounters secrets from both events that can be fatal for her.
Thanks to Mary Burton and Montclair for the book!
This is a cleverly written book. It was a bit slow in the beginning but really sped up by the end. Most of the characters weren’t very likable. Marissa seems weak at first but you soon find out she’s very strong willed. There were a lot of twists and turns. It’s a little dark and there’s not a lot of happy in this story. Overall I liked it. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
A departure from this Author’s usual writing but I enjoyed it immensely. Marisa and Clare are identical twins. Since Clare’s murder 14 years before, Marisa has struggled with drugs and alcohol. Now sober she wants to solve her sister’s murder. Her memory gap from a car accident is not helping. I love it when I am surprised by the ending as I was here. Another fabulous book by Ms. Burton. Thanks to NetGalley, Montlake and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.
I've read many books by this author and this one did not disappoint. The story moved quickly and kept me guessing ( I was partially right at the end, but hadn't guessed it all). The characters felt real and their history was told smoothly, intertwined with the present. Unlike some books that jump back and forth so many times it's confusing
👍🏼 a fun whodunnit suspense
This book is not a ~requirement~ for suspense readers, but you’ll be happy if you took the time to read it!

Marisa and Clare Stockton are identical twins in almost every way, except Marisa tends to be the brood to Clare’s sunshine. Until 16 year old Clare disappears on New Year’s Eve and her body is found in the river several days later. The police tear the town apart, and yet Clare’s murder has never been solved.
Marisa has spent the better part of the last 14 years taking the edge off with drugs and alcohol, but she’s finally turned a corner and has been sober for a year. Marisa is a professional photographer, mostly shooting weddings, but recently she can’t stop returning to the river to photograph the area where Clare was found. Marisa has never been able to let Clare go, and now that she’s sober she’s asking around with a new intensity.
As Marisa starts asking around, she’s reacquainted with some old high school friends and meets some new people. Suspicion is cast on all of them as Marisa realizes everyone has something that they’ve kept hidden, including herself. Do all of these secrets lead to the truth?
Sorting through the facts and the lies is tricky especially when Marisa has a 10 day gap in her memory. What looked like a weird accident becomes increasingly concerning as Marisa begins to have flashes of memories. What does this car wreck have to do with Clare’s murder?
Mary Burton takes you through some clever twists and turns to find Clare’s killer.
This was an easy quick read that kept me guessing far too late into the night. So many villains! Loved it.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.
I found the perspective switching between characters, and the past and present, added a layer of emotion that draws you in and showcases the frustration and confusion Marisa herself was going through, as well as her struggle with her relationships past and present.
Having recently lost part of her memory in a car accident, believed caused by a slip in her sobriety, Marisa is trying to prove to her sister, Brit she can keep it together.
Fourteen years ago Marisa Stockton ceased being an identical twin, was thrown into a tailspin of substance abuse and unable to process the loss. Now she finally has got her life together and is sober. Her sister's murder is about to become a cold-case as the lead detective is retiring, she is determined to delve into the past and prevent that from happening.
What really happened that night, and who is lying? As she pushes for the truth, and at the same time trying to recall the lost days leading to her accident, will she herself survive?
This read was unique and definitely interesting!

This was not your typical Mary Burton book. It had a ton and I mean a ton of different POV's. But! You get used to that and the story begins to flow. I usually figure out the mystery but I didn't this time which I appreciated!
I am a huge fan of Mary Burton and always enjoy her books. This book was a departure from her usual writing style. Marisa & Claire are identical twins. Claire was murdered 14 years ago at age 16 and the murder is unsolved. Brit who is Marisa older sister has a party for Marisa's thirty birthday. Guests are friends from the past that were around when Claire was murdered. Marisa struggles with substance abuse and the unsolved murder. She starts trying to go back an solve the murder. The book goes back and forth from past to present. I enjoyed it but did not care for the ending.
Received this copy for my honest review from Netgalley.
The plot itself is okay and potentially could've been really interesting (although the reveal to the whodunit is pretty anticlimactic), but the writing is so wooden that I found it difficult to connect with the conflict and characters.
Just as you think you have figured out who the killer is the story goes on. This was one of my fastest reads (3 days) this year! If you like suspense you would most likely read this just as fast or faster than me! I was hooked after the first chapter
Mary Burton is at the top of the Romantic Suspense genre and for a good reason! What a great book! Love all her novels.
I really enjoyed this book, it was well written with an interesting premise and well developed characters. It had a gripping storyline that was twisty and unpredictable. I couldnt put it down, it was a compelling read.
