Another fantastic book from this author, well written with good characters which kept me involved in the story line from the beginning until the end.
I can recommend this book and all books from this author and thank you to Netgalley and Inkubator Publishers for allowing me to read it. I look forward to reading more in the future.
A new author for me. Fast paced. Told between three characters. Are there some lessons learned for a future getaway? Maybe! Will look for more by Daniel!
This was a quick, enthralling read. You know what is going to happen right from the first page but still won't be able to stop reading. I liked the different perspectives from the characters which helped everything fit together at the end. The motive was heartbreaking and offered plenty of ammunition to move the sinister plot along.
The Break by Daniel Hurst is a quick thriller that you can breeze through, despite it’s predictable and underwhelming plot.
The book is written from the point of view of the three main characters and within the first few chapters, the antagonist’s intentions are already made known. The entire duration of the book you are waiting for their intentions to come into fruition and the only unknown of the book is the ultimate outcome and ending.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting a quick, mindless thriller to read but for anyone wanting a thriller that keeps you guessing and on your toes, this one isn’t quite it.
Sadly I didn't like this book as much as I hoped. It's the second by this author that I've read and I find he is very repetitive and his descriptions are a little too much. In this one for instance, we already knew the perpetrator was an arsonist, yet he felt the need to explain that not only did she not matche, not went on to tell us why! It was just too much.
I have read several of Daniel's books and enjoyed them all and this was no exception. I was hooked from the first page and although it was quite predictable in places I still really enjoyed this domestic thriller. Bring on the next book!
3.5 STARS
A quick little popcorn read!
My first by this author who has many fans and has written a bunch of popular psychological thrillers in the last couple of years. The Passenger is free on KU (at the moment) and I have it on my list to read soon.
I enjoyed his straightforward writing, pacing, and the first person narration from the main players. It is the kind of book you can just zoom through even though the plot was mostly predictable with an underwhelming feel.
The characters are standard with some to cheer for and some to detest. One character I really liked added some wisdom of forgiveness and not being consumed with anger forever. This is a revenge story though, and a fairly standard one.
It was a quick one which doesn't require much thinking, grab your coffee kind of read!
The Break is a suspenseful drama involving an affair, a marriage in trouble, and a helpful friend.
Peter suggests that the family goes on a holiday, something Karen is not interested in doing at the moment. Karen is struggling with her home life. She is complaining to her friend Eve how bad things are at home. Eve suggests that she go on a holiday or a break for a night or two by herself. Peter rejects the idea as she is punishing him for having an affair, but ultimately agrees for Karen to go away for a night or two.
While Karen is relaxing at the holiday house, Peter struggles with taking care of the boys, being late for pick up from school, making dinner and other responsibilities. A new neighbor drops by to get to know Peter and he is unsure how to handle the meeting. "Natalie" makes Peter uncomfortable and he cuts the visit short. But she returns the next night with a bottle of wine and forces herself in to enjoy the evening. The evening comes to an abrupt halt as Karen returns home early. "Natalie" escapes out the back before Karen enters the house.
There is a lot going on that Peter and Karen are unaware their lives are in danger. This was a wonderful thriller and a quick read. Not all the characters are likeable, but the plot was interesting and the story moved along slowly building to an interesting conclusion.
I enjoy Daniel Hurst's writing style. His books are definitely worth reading and highly recommended.
I was very intrigued from the first chapter of this book and although the plot is simple and a little predictable I found this to be a fast paced and enjoyable domestic thriller that has left me wanting to pick up more books by this author.
I had high expectations for this book but unfortunately it did not deliver. It was not gripping and the twists were rather predictable. I have always liked this author before so I was quite disappointed.
It seems like a lovely little house. But it has dark secrets…
Karen is a busy wife and mother. Between work, her husband Peter, and their two children, Oscar and Noah, she doesn’t have a minute to herself.
So when it all begins to feel too much, Karen knows just what she needs - to get away for a little while. Nothing big. Just a short break.
Her friend, Eve, tells her about a quaint little holiday home, and Karen books herself a short stay. She’ll have time to read, take bubble baths, unwind. Perfect.
But this is no ordinary holiday home – it contains a dark and disturbing secret. Because Karen isn’t alone here – someone is watching her. Waiting for the right moment to spring the trap and plunge her into a nightmare she’ll never forget.
This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
A really good psychological thriller and one sit read for me.
Karen is a married woman and mother of two. her boys are super energetic and her marriage is facing some problems, witch both are draining her out so when her friend Eve suggests that she could spend a day solo in a holiday house, she is more than happy to accept. but one thing she doesn't know is that someone is watching her. but who? why? and in the end, was it worth it for Karen to take this one day off?
the book has three narrators, Karen, Eve and Karen's husband. and I really love when there is more than one point of view in a story. It helps you get a better understanding.
It's an easy read and a enjoyable one for that matter. a really good plot at the end and breath-taking surprises during the read. I would recommend this to everyone who likes thrillers.
This review will be published on NetGallery and Goodreads.
Thanks to Net Gallery and Inkubator Books for Providing my copy.
Did not finish.
Got to approx 30% but everytime i picked up the book I had to go back a chapter or so to remind myself what the book was about!..
Not for me sadly. Shame as I have liked others I've read by the author...
Wow, how edge-of-your-seat exciting! Karen finds out that her husband Peter is having an affair. When he calls off his affair, the woman is so heartbroken that she kills herself. It is now a year later and things are about to become scary for Peter, Karen, and their two sons. This story has plenty of action and ends on a happy note. Highly recommended.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of The Break.
Karen has a new friend. Eve is caring, considerate and kind. She listens to Karen’s problems, the main one being whether she is able to forgive her husband’s infidelity of a year ago. Then Eve suggests a couple of nights away in a holiday home she knows about. To Karen, it seems too good to be true. So maybe it is…
I always enjoy Daniel Hurst books, and this one didn’t disappoint. A fast paced storyline meant I raced through this in a few days. Easy to read and get engrossed in. Solid 4 stars.

This is a slow burning psychological thriller with themes of revenge, rescue, and reconciliation. Karen needs a break from her family, and her new friend Eve is more than happy to provide her with the perfect place. Yet, nothing and no one is as they seem to be, and now Karen and her family are in for a dangerous ride for their lives. This read is a guilty pleasure! Recommended if you love suspense, domestic thrillers, and stories about whether or not we truly get what we deserve. Thank you to Daniel Hurst, Inkubator Books, and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
I haven’t read this author before, but having read the premise, I was keen to get reading.
The story was easy to get straight in to and the narrative flowed smoothly. The plot wasn’t twisty and mysterious, but it was intriguing and exciting.
I usually only read a couple of chapters a night, but with this book I carried my kindle around, reading a chapter every time I got a chance. That serves as the best indicator of how good a book is - I loved it!
I've read several other books by Daniel Hurst since I got hooked on this author. This one was a bit different since I knew what was going on and who was causing it all. But needless to say, it was a thrilling intense read along the way. There weren't any twists like his previous books but the ending was pretty intense. The story was about an affair and a disturbed woman getting even with someone.
I’m really struggling with how to review this one. I definitely enjoyed it and it was a quick read, but I just don’t think it lived up to the “psychological thriller” description that was promised in the blurb. The story was intriguing, but there were no real twists or surprises along the way. I liked the premise of being in the head of the villain as well as the protagonist, but as a result it sort of fell into the trap of “telling not showing”.
I will say though that I have read another book by this author and I remember feeling similarly at the end, so it may just be that his writing style just isn’t my cup of tea. However, if you enjoy this author you will probably like this book in my opinion.
This book is really gripping right from the first moment that you pick it up and right to the very end. The characters are believable and the storyline feels very true.
Karen is feeling like life is too much. She is a works at a high powered job, is a busy wife to her husband Peter and a busy mum to their two children Oscar and Noah and is starting to feel burnt out.
Desperate for some peace and quite and some time for herself Karen decides to take a short break by herself, at a little quiant holiday home her best friend Eve has told her all about. So Karen books herself in for a short stay. She is looking forward to having some quality me time, time to read, to luxuriate in a bubble bath, to meditate, unwind and just start feeling a bit more like herself.
But the holiday home isn't quite what Karen expected. The holiday home isn't like any other holiday home. It comes with a disturbing secret and Karen is being watched, she isn't as alone as she hoped and is soon plunged into a waking nightmare that she will never forget. Sometimes you have to be careful of what you wish for.
