The illustrations and information are laid out by category (herding dogs, nonsporting dogs, working dogs, etc. Then within the categories readers can search for breeds alphabetically. Each page tells the dog's breed history, appearance, behavior, and special considerations which makes this a nice resource for anyone wanting a dog for a pet. Knowing whether a breed will be a good fit for your family is important, and libraries would do well to have this resource available.
I think the vibrant photographs and bite-sized chunks of information make this an approachable resource for elementary-age readers and their families. I know that adults would happily use this resource as it doesn't throw so much information at the reader that they can't find the information they need. I think adults and kids, or really anyone interested in dogs, should read this!
The Genius Kids Guide to Dogs by Merriam Garcia is a great reference book about various dog breeds, written for kids, but will also be great for adults. The accompanying photographs are excellent - very cute and representative. It would be a great addition to a classroom or school library as well. The following kids would enjoy it the most:
1. Those kids who want a dog of their own and have been asked by their parents to find a breed that fits their family
2. Those kids who already have a dog (or more) at home and like to learn more about breeds
3. Those kids who love dogs and love learning more about them.
I am a pet professional and even I found the book useful even though I have much more knowledge about each breed than is mentioned in this book. So I wouldn't say the information in this book is comprehensive or encyclopedic, but it is a great starting point, especially for younger audiences. It also has information about the behaviour, expected temperament issues or needs, and breed history which is all rare for books of this category.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher - North Star Kids Editions and NetGalley, and the author for a digital ARC of this book. #TheGeniusKidsGuidetoDogs #NetGalley #NorthStarEditions

This is a good resource book for kids of all ages - lots of great pictures, but also solid descriptions and facts for the breeds presented. It is definitely conceived for a US audience, the kids I read it with had some quibbles with the language and terms, but overall enjoyed it and gained some key knowledge about dogs that make good pets - and those that are not destined to be pets, because they're working animals.
This is going to be a great addition to our Lower School library. Informative without being overwhelming, tons of ADORABLE photos as well as being incredibly comprehensive. There is no doubt that this will be a hit for kiddos of all ages, whether they have dogs, are trying to convince their parents they should get a puppy or are just interested in finding out more information about dogs in general!
I don't know that this will make your kid a genius but it will definitely provide them with solid information on a wide variety of dog breeds, their characteristics, and traits. Since I'm owned by a corgi mix, I opted to use that breed as an example. While my girl is a mix, she seems to fit nicely within the Cardigan Welsh Corgi guidelines. One thing it mentions that I'd noticed but hadn't realized was a breed trait was that they tend to have bowed legs, hence their feet point outward. I'd just thought it was some quirk of my own dog. Cool.
This book won't tell you everything there is about every dog breed in existence but is a nice addition to any library, child or adult. It will tell you what the breed is known for, where it originated, and, among others, special considerations. I found those particularly useful as that included energy levels, ie amount of exercise needed daily, herding tendencies, whether they are shedding machines, and inclination to gain weight. I was definitely interested in that aspect. There is more, such as a short list of other target audience level books, and index, and photo credits for the lovely photos used as illustration. You won't learn everything there is to know about dogs from this book but it provides a solid foundation. One to add to the shelf. Adults may find it sparse on detail but for the targeted audience, works nicely.
Thank you #NetGalley and #NorthStarEditions - #NorthStarKids for allowing me a sneak peek. I love the cover and even learned something about my own dog!
I turned to this book in some trepidation, as the sister volume concerning sharks (and just like this, an older book retitled to fit into what seems to want to be a new series) didn't know whether it was a dictionary of shark types or a read-through-from-a-to-b book about them. This is very much the former, jumping straight in with working dogs as love to herd animals, and giving us the same format each time. We get the date the critters were first registered as a separate breed by the American Kennel club, the colour options, the dimensions, the species origin, and a couple of factoids about them that describe the species look, traits and temperament in very nicely concise order. We also get a photo of them as an adult, and one of them in puppy form – if you can guarantee the young person you're buying this for won't want one of each.
After giving all the main breeds one or two pages there's a round-up of some of the scarcer types, and then it's on to hounds and hunting dogs, and on. You have to say this is perfectly presented for a young reader, although definitions like those for 'merle' and 'brindle' etc should have been at the front. Whether leading to class exercises on artificial selection and genetics, or just a pretty guide for the shelf at home, this does a lot right that the shark one did wrong, and its all-round visual competence earns it four and a half stars.
Beautiful pictures and lots of interesting facts about the history of a variety of dog breeds. Many new Poodle mixes such as Schnoodle are included.
Thank you to NetGalley and North Start Editions for my copy of The Genius Kid's Guide to Dogs by Merriam Garcia in exchange for an honest review. It publishes September 6, 2022.
What a fun book! I think this would make an excellent gift for any kid who enjoys dogs. Full of beautiful pictures and educational bits to enrich one's knowledge about their favorite canines cuties!
In this book, you get to learn about different dog breeds, how they look (appearance), their behavior, and their history. The pictures are of the breeds as puppies and grown ups. There are also some small/fun facts about each dog, which I found really interesting.
When I was just a baby we had two german shepherd dog, and when I was a teenager, my aunt got the same breed of dog, and it was my best friend. Also, an old family friend has an old english sheepdog, and a friend has a corgi, so it was nice to read more about it. Such wonderful animals!
I got the same feeling as when I went to school around 8 years old and we got to go to the library and read animal books! Reading facts and looking at the adorable pictures—a good throwback!
Working in a bookstore, we do get a lot of people asking about specific animal books, and I think this fits so well. I do hope this comes out in different languages (psst, Norwegian), so that more dog lovers and curious-ers about dogs can get a copy of it.
A great book if you want to learn more about different types of dogs, if you are in doubt in what breed that fits you and your life, or are in general curious about dogs and/or loves dogs (like me)!
Thanks Netgalley for an arc in exchange for honest review
