This book exudes empathy. We all wish doing the right thing was easy and straightforward, but Fred has to find her own way to do what is right when it doesn't seem like the rest of the world agrees. She does this while navigating a newly blended family that is growing. The Year the Maps Changed keeps the reader engaged as you cheer and dare to hope these 11 and 12 year old kids will make the world a better place amid the Kosovo refugee influx of 1999 in Australia.
