This was really fun -- a good dystopian piece, plus great social commentary.

This book had an amazing premise! Love the apocalyptic thriller genre. I really think it had so much potential, but to me it fell a bit flat. The characters had this whole back story that didn’t seem to tie much into the story, or at least it didn’t in my eyes. It seemed to be a bit of wasted time.

The good about the book was that it is something that could definitely happen, which gave it that extra fear factor.

The resolution was a bit expected but still left something to be desired. It just seemed anticlimactic and uneventful.

All in all, it was moderately entertaining.

Jacob's first day as a temp starts out with a terrorist attack that kills all the full time employees at the corporation, and most of the planet as well. What's left of the world outside the building is chaos. Jacob and his fellow temps, stuck inside Delphi Enterprises, are left to gather food and try to figure out a way to survive. This novel explores the relationships of the survivors and the way people cling to old habits of civilization building. I liked the critique of the state of the modern workplace and the role that the temporary worker plays. I was given an advanced reader copy of the audiobook by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book was intriguing right from the very beginning, and I wasn't able to put it down. I tend to love stories that involve elements of survival and gathering your resources, so if you're anything like me I have a feeling that you will love this book as well.

Wow. This one was a wild ride. A post apocalyptic roller coaster ride with mystery, twists, and relatable characters.

A yellow mist has descended on the world and it appears the only survivors are the Temps of the famous, yet ineffable, Delphi Company. What caused this chemical event that turns humans into “furies” hell bent on violence? Was it random or were the Temps chosen to survive and rebuild society? And who is Tristan Brant, mysterious CEO, and “oracle of Delphi” and what’s his role in this? The 4 temps we follow search for these answers and more.

I really enjoyed this one. Unlike any dystopian fiction I’ve ever read. It reads a little like a Grady Hendrix novel but more sci-fi, less horror (tho there’s still some gore”. Highly recommend!

This was not what I expected. I was really intrigued by the premise and listened to the audiobook. The narrator was great. I found the main part of the story about the employees trapped in their workplace somewhat boring and dragged in parts. I was more interested in the gas and the craziness that it caused.

Jacob Elliot is on his first day of work as a mail room temp at Delphi Enterprises when a toxic gas kills all the employees who were unlucky having a meeting outside. Now trapped inside, Jacob runs into a number of survivors among them Lauren, Swati, and Dominic. Each have vastly different clashing personalities and status within the company.

The group attempts to make the best of their situation as they discover the secrets kept by their employer and they uncover the truth about what is happening.

I wasn’t really sure what I expected going into this book, but this was not really what I expected. The level of descriptive gore was often uncomfortable to listen to so I did end up skipping a few parts of the story because I didn’t really enjoy that portion of the story. This book felt very similar to Bird Box to me in the sense of similar styles of story and apocalyptic scenes. I was captivated by needing to know what was going to happen next to the temps. The last few chapters of the book were really interesting as the story was leading to a close. The way that Laurens background in studying Classics was a super cool addition and I really enjoyed that as a Classics fan myself. I didn’t find this to be as satire as I thought it would be, but it was still pretty good. If you’re looking for a darker book with some neat mystery twists to it, this could be the book for you! Again, I do wish that the gore level was toned down a little bit. The first few chapters were just a tad bit too much for me.

Dystopian tales come in many flavors these days. Author Deyoung has a novel approach to the end of the world. He creates a scenario where a small group of temporary workers find themselves alive when everyone else in the company - and most of the world - is dead.

The main characters were very different and decently fleshed out, but a tad stereotypical. Deyoung used them more as foils for philosophical musings than for anything else. The plot kept me interested, as did the interactions of the characters. Hietch did a good job narrating; I was never confused as to which character was speaking.

Three and a half stars for “The Temps”. The writing itself was a tad dry, but good overall. If the characters had been more fully formed and less caricaturized, and there was less of the “religion and big business are bad” philosophy - or if it had been delivered in a less heavy-handed way, this would have been a full star higher. My thanks to Dreamscape Media via Netgalley.
