Thank you for the e-Arc.
It took me so long to finish this book. I wish I had finished it earlier because this book is so good. It's full of magic and other fantasy elements and I love fantasy. It's a perfect read for me. I know I'll be soon rereading it.
At first, I disliked Nya. She seemed full of herself and selfish. But then with the story, her character developed and I understood her more.
I could identify with Aireyal's character so much. Her fears and insecurities were so relatable. Her inner-voice reminded me that she wasn't alone, after all.
My heart broke for Erevan. His loss made my heart bleed for him. It's not easy to lose people you love.
Out of all, I loved Morgana. She was so misunderstood. I felt sad for her. I wish she had a better parent. She is my favorite at the moment.
This book has so many latent lessons for all of us. It has some really awesome quotes.
My top favorite quote is:
'That girl really cares about you, Erevan. Remember that when things are bleak.'
I mean this one is so deep. This made me ponder for hours. The relationships wouldn't be killed if people kept this on my mind.
I love this book. I highly recommend it. 5 stars!
An entertaining and enthralling read with no shortage of fantasy elements.
What makes this stand out is the unique and colourful cast of characters who are fully fleshed out and all shine individually. The author creates a very strong picture with expressive imagery and form of writing. Avery's worldbuilding is phenomenal and another spotlight to the story, it all flows so smoothly without info-dumping, and connects the reader to it's history and culture in a natural storytelling way.
Sometimes there was too much going on at once making the story choppy and there is a lot of dialogue to digest. The romance between the two MC's was unnecessary to the story and cringy at times. This isn't a "sink your teeth into" type of fantasy but more of a light and diverting diverting read for early teenagers to enjoy.

Erevan wants to be a mercenary like his father and protect those who can’t protect themselves. When he’s finally able to accompany his father on an escort mission, they encounter an woman who demands their services. As time goes on, Erevan soon realizes that he’s got a lot to learn about the world around him and that there’s more to this woman than he originally thought.
Aireyal, the daughter of the Grandmage, does not have any magic. She wants to become a Senate Mage to enact legal changes for the good of the people, but without magic, this is impossible. Her mother enrolled her in the most prestigious magical academy around, but she encounters difficulty upon difficulty in and out of her classes as well as stumbling across secrets that could be dangerous.
First, let me just say that I love the cover of the book. There are also sketches included at the beginning of each chapter that depict an item relevant to that chapter. This was a fun idea that added to the work.
The worldbuilding in this book was fantastic. There were so many interesting lore and history details included that created a more immersive setting without slowing the plot down. Some of these were especially creative. There were also unique places that were well described – the author did an excellent job at creating an immersive setting and providing enough details to fully engage the reader.
I also enjoyed the magic system of this book. The idea that people require dust to use magic (except for the elves) is interesting and implies that there’s more story there that we weren’t told yet. The inherently magical creatures were also quite fascinating and were quite creative!
Aireyal and her story were really well written. She wasn’t confident in herself, which makes sense as she had no magic, but she was still likable. I felt that her relationship was realistic and added to the work. However, I didn’t find Erevan to be an engaging or relatable character. I disliked his chapters and felt that this book would have been better if it had simply focused on Aireyal. Erevan’s love story felt unbelievable to me – I wish there had been no romance included in his story as it just didn’t feel realistic and was unnecessary. It also seemed like Morgana underwent a drastic and somewhat unbelievable shift – if her transition had been a bit less abrupt I think it would have been better.
This was a strong fantasy read that I highly recommend for young adults and adults alike!
I received a complimentary copy of this work through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I would categorize this book for middle grade and upper elementary. There might be a few too many dialogue tags, but I still fell swiftly into the story and started looking forward to when the characters would cross paths. Eventually, I realized paths weren't going to be crossing that soon. The pacing is tricky because readers are following two mostly distinct stories. I don't think young readers will find this too daunting, but, at places, they will be tempted to skip over one story to check back in with the other one faster.
