This would be great to compare to other “Five Little” stories (pumpkins in the fall, etc). The fact that the pattern repeats again adds a different element to the book, as did the predictions of what is the Lion going to do. Engaging and fun!
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. A great read-aloud book about five ostriches running from a lion. Great rhyming and counting.
This is a fun concept book centered on counting that features an animal not often seen in children's picture books: ostriches. The rhyming is great. This book would be good for story time for toddlers and young preschool aged children.
Thanks to Netgalley and Charlesbridge for a free digital copy.
A fun rhythmic story that has 5 ostriches playing hide-and-seek with a lion. The illustrations are a bit abstract and very interesting. I thought this was a fun read.
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was a fun rhyming book where the ostriches were not getting hunted like I originally thought 😆. Pictures were great. This would be a nice book for young toddlers and readers to learn numbers and rhyming.
This is a beautiful picture book for very small children.
It includes:
- Beautiful illustrations
- Wit
- Rhyme structure
- One lion
- Five ostriches
- One interesting fact that you did not no about ostriches
Go read it!
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
It was well written and flowed nicely. My daughter gives it a 4 out of 5 saying she really like me it and it was funny.
What a cute book! Beautiful illustrations. The perfect amount of intensity for a child to read. While a child will be slightly nervous about the ostriches they get to find out at the end that they were ok all along.
LOVED the idea for Hide & Sleep at the end of the book. Great way for teachers / child care providers to have an activitiy along with the book.
A very cute and playful story with sweet rhymes and beautiful illustrations! Fun and engaging; perfect for young animal lovers looking for a giggle.
This is a cute book counting to 5 with a surprise at the end. The illustrations are pretty. I like the addition of the game at the end.
This is a beautiful picture book about 5 ostriches in the savannah. Each page has detailed and colourful pictures as well as usually 1 simple noun-verb or repetitive sentence. This is the perfect book for early readers who are not interested in the often boring and overly repetitive leveled books we so often force upon them, but instead offers and interesting story with enough repetition to make it easier to understand not boring. The key to hooking young readers is often to set them up for success without being so dull that no one wants to re-read that book. Repetition is key, but too much repetition is also a bad thing. I think this book perfectly meets in the middle. The back of the book also has a fun game idea called Rock N Roar and is somewhat similar to hide and seek.
This book would be happy at school or in a home with PreK-2 early readers who want to see themselves as readers but are still just starting out. I could see reading this chorally with a group of young readers or as part of shared reading with a young child. I could also see young children enjoying the pictures and telling their own version of the story as they grow. I would definitely recommend this book to Early Years teachers!
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!
I was drawn to this picture book because of its beautiful cover illustrated by Riley Samels. The muted, warm tones and bold letters entwined with sloping figures of ostriches was eye-catching. It’s a book I would love to display and share with others.
This picture book was also great fun to read aloud! The story’s illustrated pacing and line rhythm builds suspense for the reader as the ostriches hide from a lion. Then, with the power of onomatopoeia we are jolted with excitement when the lion says, “You birds won hide-and-seek.”
This is a wonderful book for young readers and it even provides instructions for a “Rock ‘N’ Roar” game at the end of the story. Any animal-loving will enjoy this story time read.
Ostriches who play hide-and-seek with a lion!
This is not only a fun read, but you get a debunked fact at the end: does ostriches hide their head in the sand when faced with danger? No, they lay down and pretend to be a boulder! This is brilliant, and it was shown very good in this book.
A fun and easy read children’s book I recommend it!
