While I was reading this book, I got a flashback to the magic moment when I realized I could read the book the teacher put in front of me. I don't know that I could give it a higher compliment than that.
This is a fun children's book for young children aged 6. It is about a young boy and his dragon who make friends and play at the park. The book has short sentences and gorgeous illustrations which describe words such as dear dragon, mother, play, friends, up, down, fun, help, ball, good and day. There are also reading reinforcement and word list sections at the end of the book, which are useful. My daughter and I loved this book, and I highly recommend it.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Play, Play, Play, Dear Dragon by Margaret Hillert is a book in the Dear Dragon series for developing readers. According to the synopsis, the book is about when "a boy and his pet dragon make friends at the playground." The sentences themselves are simple and less natural-sounding, which makes sense, since this book is for a developing reader.
Overall, Play, Play, Play, Dear Dragon is a children's picture book with plenty of teaching points. As a teacher, I liked that there is a section for phonics, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary in the back of the book. Those are definitely useful activities that will help kids academically. I took off 2 stars, because I found the pictures somewhat lacking. Some children's books are read over and over, because children adore the illustrations. Unfortunately, you won't find that here. If you're looking for a book for a developing reader, I recommend that you check out this series, which is available now!
This book is perfect for young readers, working on their reading skills. The words were simple, with clear, bold font. The illustrations were very fun and the dragon was quite lovable.
This is a beginning or early reader for young children who are developing phonemic awareness and learning to read. Each page has 2-3 short, noun-verb sentences with decodable and high frequency words. The book ends with some great tools for teachers or parents such as lists of high frequency words, information about developing phonemic awareness and how to help children who are struggling with a word. While the content of the book is pretty simple, as most leveled readers are, it does include a dragon so I could see some children being interested or drawn in as a result. I would recommend this book for parents or teachers of young children in the very early stages of reading.
I really appreciate the opportunity from Netgalley and the publisher to read and review an advance copy of this book!
My little one has recently started reception so our life is all about the phonics so to find books that really encompass learning phonics and keeping the story simple but using repetitive words that young children can learn to read and recognise easily is fantastic. The story is a lovely little read about a young boy wanting to play with his pet dragon at the park and encountering other children.
The illustrations are beautiful and very bright and eye catching, the font used for the words is perfect and they are easily read and accessible for younger readers
I especially love the additional content at the end of the story allowing me as a parent to set up some further learning and reading with my child, as well as encouraging him to play reading games such as the “making words” game, it is a fantastic addition, and I feel that this book will be a great learning too for my children.
This book has become one of my sons favourite reads and I cannot wait to find other books by this author to have a wide range of books we can work with!
The Dragon learning to read books are a good resource for both parents and their children. They reinforce reading skills that will last a life time. There is something about being involved in the process of your children learning to read so I highly recommend these series.
This learn to read book is about play. With word repetition, colorful illustration, it will be play to read! Have fun!
A special thank you to Norwood House Press and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
