Prince of Song & Sea by Linsey Miller is an interesting spin on The Little Mermaid told through the viewpoint of Prince Eric.
Prince of Song and Sea is a fleshed-out and aged-up version the The Little Mermaid. Perfect for teens who loved the movie as little ones.
Prince Eric has always been an intriguing character but also a blank slate. Miller creates a whole new world for this character. She makes Eric human and gets you to understand why Ariel would risk it all for him.
This book was pretty good. I love the little mermaid, so it was really difficult for me to decide if I liked this or not. I really did like Prince Eric, though he's very different from the movie Eric. I didn't love Ariel, which was weird. The new characters were okay, but lacking depth. However, I loved all the extra plot points the author added! It was really fun and I did overall enjoy the book! I'd say 3.5 stars and I'd definitely put it in my library.
This book was absolutely phenomenal. It lined up with the movie but had its own twist on the entire story, new characters, new plots… I absolutely loved everything about this and can’t wait to continue the series.
Have you ever wondered what Eric was going through during the events of The Little Mermaid? That's exactly what this book will unveil for you.
Eric has been cursed and is trying to find the right girl to break that curse while also trying to protect his kingdom. This story does such a good job of filling in gaps from the movie that you never even knew you were missing. It perfectly fits within the events we already know and love but adds so much more to the story. I love that there were added supernatural elements as well that further pushes the fantasy elements. I think my favorite part of seeing through Eric's perspective is getting to really understand why he won't just kiss the girl!!
I gave this book 5 stars because I was pulled in early and it never let go. It also really spoke to my Disney loving self as well as my affinity for "retellings." Though technically it's an expansion not a retelling. I am looking forward to more books in this series!
I enjoyed this as an expansion of The Little Mermaid (my favorite). I loved the lines pulled straight from the movie. However, I felt a little disjointed with Eric's character, I just wanted my leading man. But I enjoyed the behind the scenes of his royal life and that he actually had friends. I also wanted to be OBSESSED with this, but it was just okay. HOWEVER, Phillip is coming next and that earns extra brownie points because MY LOVES. Great picks to kick off this new series.
I actually really enjoyed this. I am a ginormous Disney nerd and tend to love retellings, but this was the first time I've read a retelling based off of a specific movie, instead of the story itself, so I wasnt sure how I was going to feel about it. The Little Mermaid was definitely a favorite of mine growing up, so I was intrigued when I saw a book was being released, but from Prince Eric's POV. That is not the only difference, though, between this book and the movie. More characters were added, different story lines too (such as curses, ghosts, and pirates) that were not in the original storyline, but it included enough moments from the movie to keep it recognizably Disney. All-in-all, I really enjoyed this story. It's the first in a series of retellings from loved Dinsey princes and though they have not announced who the next prince will be; I'm still looking forward to whatever they come up with! (I can only hope that an Adam POV is on the horizon!)
Disney has done it again! The Little Mermaid takes a new rendition by telling the story from Prince Eric's perspective. You'll come to find out that you don't know the whole story at all. Missing from the classic tale is all the adventure, pirates, and a curse. There is plenty of depth added to Eric and Ariel. Ursula is as cruel as ever! The inclusion of diversity is much appreciated. If you or anyone you know loves The Little Mermaid, what are you waiting for? Be sure to check out Prince of Song & Sea today!
In this new take on Disney's The Little Mermaid, Prince Eric takes the spot light. . The added adventure, pirates and mystery surrounding a curse and and Eric's family add more to the original source. Very rarely does a retelling really add something to the original and this definitely checks all the boxes.
The only set back is a few of the chapters felt a bit long at times lingering on conversations that make it feel like it is dragging on a bit. But it really doesn't hold it back too much.
I expected this to be a redundant rehashing of The Little Mermaid from Eric's perspective but thankfully this was much more complex and went into interesting character building to explain some of Eric's personality from the movie plus Miller fleshed out much more of Ursula's plotting to really deepen the stakes. That said, the first third was slow and repetitive. It tightened up considerably and I was engrossed during the last third. I was delighted to see Ariel's characterization expanded in a way that did not conflict with the film's portrayal. And I appreciated there were several years before the wedding- Disney is getting the memo and creating more realistic but still fantastical stories. Nothing beyond the occasional kiss scene, this is an excellent book for kids with picky parents. Thanks to NetGalley and Disney Press for an early read in exchange for an honest review.
The Little Mermaid was always my least Disney movie, though Eric was a favorite prince. I think do in part to the fact that he had his own ship. So I jumped at the chance to read the story from his point of view. And quite frankly his point of view was so much better than Ariel's. And I can't wait to see which prince is featured in the next book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Disney Publishing for providing the ARC.
I was obsessed with The Little Mermaid growing up, and as I've gotten older, Prince Eric has stayed at the top of my Best Disney Princes list.
I loved that this book wasn't a rehashing of the movie from Eric's point of view. I loved that they fleshed out his backstory and gave him a purpose other than falling in love. It was great seeing all the nods not just to the movie, but also to the original fairy tale. I really enjoyed reading this book.
I am a sucker for alternate POV retellings, and if they're as good as this, I'll be reading a lot more.
Interesting character backstory for one of the more popular Disney princes; it does muddle the canon a touch (because prequels all do) but it was enjoyable enough. we'd be interested to see which character gets this treatment next.
This was a really cool retelling of The Little Mermaid. I loved seeing the tale unfold through Eric's eyes and the added curse. I also love how this didn't stay 100% Disney pink and rosy - the encounters with the ghosts and monsters in the sea were truly dark and I appreciated that element.
All other fairytale retellings are so overdone at this point, so finally "The Little Mermaid" story is getting more attention. This novel took everything I loved from the Hans Christian Andersen story and built upon it, and it thankfully rewrote the original depressing ending. In this version, the characters that we've come to know and love over the years have more development and agency to them. This book is an underrated gem!
Prince Eric was always one of my favorite Disney princes because he actually has a voice and a personality (unlike other princes of that time who didn't have more than a line or two in the story and were just pretty faces). Plus I liked that Ariel rescued him first. When I saw that there was a new book from Eric's perspective, I knew I was going to love it. Plus... the cover.... is AMAZING!
This is Eric's story. There's so much more that happened behind the scenes that isn't seen in the movie and I love that this book explains some of it from Eric's point of view. The opening scene of Eric on the boat with his statue unveiling is rather humorous. I also like Eric's friends and their adventures together. And of course... the twist of Eric being cursed by a sea witch too. The twist is the best part since it makes the whole story make more sense.
Basically, I loved everything about this novel and its explanations and unique story line.
I like that this novel did give a depth to Ursula that wasn't seen before in the movie either. I think I liked her more in this story than in the movie and I liked her as a villain so much as a kid.
If you're a Little Mermaid fan, this book is for you!
What an amazing story! I love knowing Prince Eric's version of what happened in The Little Mermaid. This book gives us so much background information about the prince, his family, and his hesitation against Ariel. I enjoyed this book so much and fell in love with Prince Eric all over again. I also love the way Ariel portrayed and how she takes risks to save the prince. This is a must read title if you are or are not a fan of The Little Mermaid.
Linsey Miller does a fabulous job of capturing the tone and feel of "The Little Mermaid" without treading the exact same ground as the movie. The book sings a wonderful counterpoint to the story we all know and love, embellishing Ariel's story while expanding Eric into a fully fledged individual with hopes and dreams and fears.

Too many token LGBTQ characters. It was distracting with an interesting story, but the representation made it feel like it was more about representation than about the story. It was just more than I anticipated and strangely juxtaposed against the original story and I didn’t want to spend anymore time on it
