I am feeling torn about this book. While I REALLY enjoyed the parts that were retelling the film from Eric's point of view, and I understand that there needed to be elements added to flesh out his story which a lot of happens off screen, I didnt love the new elements. I really liked all of Eric's friends and all of their interactions but the whole curse and pirate subplot felt forced, clunky and disjointed. I just wish things flowed better and were smoother.

I thought this was a cute retelling that had nods to the original movie. I felt at times established characters were out of character, but the added side characters were fun to read about.

"What would I give, to live where you are?"
Two years ago, Prince Eric's mother, Queen of Vellona, went missing and hasn't been seen since. Before she disappeared, she reminded Eric of the deadly curse that plagues him. If he kisses anyone other than his true love, he will die. After finding a letter left behind by his mother, it's revealed that his true love has a voice pure as heart. He must find her and kiss her to lift the curse, or kill the sea witch responsible. Eric is on the hunt to find the Isle of Serein, where the witch resides, all while a neighboring kingdom is looking for any excuse to invade their shores. Desperate for answers and to bring stability to his home, he braves the waters that are rumored to have ghost pirates lurking. When a mysterious young woman with a voice that's mesmerizing rescues him, Eric's heart is torn. Does he enter a battle he's almost certain will be a losing one or chase this new love that may never be in his reach? He's even more confused when he finds a young woman with a beautiful smile and flaming red hair shipwrecked. Eric has many choices to make and his life could depend on it. Can true love really be decided by magic?
Disney retellings are some of my favorite reads, but I'm always really hesitant going into them. Linsey Miller did a wonderful job kicking of this new Princes series. She didn't follow the original story too closely and created such a unique story for Eric. I love joining him on his dangerous adventures in search of the sea witch. I didn't want to stop reading and flew through this story. The narrator, Dan Bittner, did a wonderful job voicing the characters and really showing their emotions. If you're a fan of The Little Mermaid or Disney in general, check this one out!
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and Edelweiss+. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and Disney Books for letting me read the eARC of this title in return for an honest review.
I am a sucker for Disney retellings and this one did not disappoint.. Linsey Miller has given new life to The Little Mermaid's Prince Eric. Through her writing we learn of Eric's life before and after the shipwreck, his sorrows and flaws. Miller adds diversity to the cast with new characters (human and merfolk). There is a a quest to go on and a witch to defeat. There are pirates, ghosts, a Blood Tide, a mysterious island and strange storms. The reader will recognize scenes from the movie, they are just in a different perspective.
I cant wait to put this in the hands of my students.
No sex, No language. LGTBQ representation and romance. I would give this adventure to grades 7 and up.

An interesting take on "The Little Mermaid", but this time from the point of view of Prince Eric. It was mostly enjoyable but could drag a little in places. It appears this will be an on-going series.

This has me hyped for a series of books from the princes' POV.
This book followed the plot of the movie, and it was so fun to see things from Eric's perspective, like the dinner scene and the 'Kiss the Girl' scene. The inclusion of a deeper backstory for Eric and additional scenes really fleshed out his character and developed the relationship with Ariel from insta-love to a gradual believable love. Ursula was even made to be MORE evil and honestly? I'm loving it. There's also casual additions of diversity and I didn't even realize that one character was a lesbian and another used they/them pronouns until almost the end! It was such a casual addition and honestly? We need more like it. Ariel's part in the final battle is still a bit passive, but they're following the original movie so I guess I'll let it slide a bit. We do get to see how intelligent and caring she is in this book, shedding some of that impulsive teen persona she has in the movie. They also addressed why she couldn't write him notes! It's a quick read but adds so much to the Little Mermaid story. I'm so happy they started with my favorite movie and I am excited for future installments.

This book was exactly what I had hoped it would be. It follows the classic Disney movie almost exactly- so I knew sort of what to expect when I got into the book. But this is all from Eric’s POV and I thoroughly enjoyed it! More than I had anticipated I would. There are some small changes in Eric’s story from the original, but these changes were great and did not take away from the storyline. Reading this while listening to “The Little Mermaid” soundtrack was quite the experience!

Did I think I needed this story? No. But is it ingrained in my brain now? Absolutely! I really enjoyed seeing this take on The Little Mermaid and honestly would like to have this perspective for every story going forward!

Description from NetGalley:
Before Prince Eric’s mother, the Queen of Vellona, went missing two years ago, she reminded him about the details of the deadly curse that has plagued his entire life. The curse? If he were to kiss someone other than his true love, he would die. With a neighboring kingdom looking for any excuse to invade their shores, and rumors of ghost pirates lurking the seas, Eric is desperate for any information that may help him break his enchantment and bring stability to Vellona. The answers he has been searching for come to him in the form of a letter left from his mother that reveals Eric must find his true love, the one with a voice pure of heart, or kill the sea witch responsible for cursing him in the first place.
Now Eric is on a quest to find the Isle of Serein, the witch's legendary home. But after he is rescued by a mysterious young woman with a mesmerizing singing voice, Eric’s heart becomes torn. Does he enter a battle he is almost certain he cannot win or chase a love that might not even exist? And when a shipwrecked young woman with flaming red hair and a smile that could calm the seven seas enters his life, Eric may discover that true love isn’t something that can be decided by magic.
This is the start to a prince centered series of books like the Twisted Tales series that Disney publishes. This is interesting. It is more than just a retelling from Eric’s POV. Like with the Twisted Tales books, the bones of the story are there. Those big plot beats are hit, just a little differently. Eric is more than just a pretty face. He’s got friends and people trying to get him to marry their daughters. Plus a lot of people are going missing in the sea. It was interesting to see Ariel through Eric’s eyes.
Overall: 4/5

This is a great edition to the Disney novel verse. Getting to know the Little Mermaid from Prince Eric's point of view along with his own story was so fascinating. This does read on the younger YA genre but enjoyable for all ages.

I was hesitant to read this book because I love The Little Mermaid so much, but I have to say that this book was fantastic! We get the story from Prince Eric's point of view, with added depth and a deeper reason behind Eric's being at sea, and the reasons he does certain things. Things were added to the story like ghosts, curses, a non-binary pirate, and other side characters. I found myself wishing the movie had included some of these elements. If you like the Little Mermaid, or any seafaring tale, you'll love this book!

Thank you, NetGalley, for the chance to read this fun eARC. Growing up, I was a huge Little Mermaid fan, and, to this day, that has not changed. So, I was super excited when I learned of the Prince of Song & Sea. I love reading tales from another character's point of view, and I am thankful that I had this great opportunity to read Prince Eric's. I enjoyed meeting Eric's friends and the unique addition of Eric's curse. Still, the parts I found myself loving the most were the small scenes from the old Disney film itself. Each time I recognized a small piece of dialog from the original movie, I fell even more in love with the book. Prince of Song & Sea was a fun, magical read, and it left me even more excited for the upcoming live-action film set to release in 2023.

This was such a cute story of the Little Mermaid told from Eric's POV!
We get a bit of a back story to Eric and his family including a curse of his own. If he kisses someone who is not his true love his life would be forfeit.
His mother reminded him of this almost daily when he was young, but a few years ago she went missing and assumed lost to the sea. But Eric never lost hope. One day he gets a bit of information that would lead him down a path to his curse, the witch who cast it, and his true love.
I ate this story up and really enjoyed getting to see the background, and Ariel through our Prince's eyes.
Cannot wait for more in this series!

If you have ever wondered what Eric was thinking during the Little Mermaid, this is your book!
Being a die hard Disney Princess girl growing up, and Ariel being one of my favorite princesses at one time, this book made my little girl heart so happy! I loved seeing what Eric thought and was going through during the movie I grew up watching. The curse added so much more to this story. You got to see how Eric and Ariel communicated. Also, you saw more behind the scenes to this classic movie, with no musical numbers sadly. This is a book I never knew I wanted, but now that I have read it, I can't understand why I never wanted this.

I loved this book. Having the story that we all know told from the male hero's perspective was fantastic. It's great to have more of the background of the stories. I would love for this concept to continue as a series so that the boys in my classroom could have a chance to join in on the excitement.

Prince of Song & Sea by Linsey Miller is a fun adventure from Prince Eric’s perspective. This story lines up with Disney's “The Little Mermaid”, but from Eric’s point of view. This retelling is a fun spin on a classic story.
Eric was cursed at birth by a witch, and can't kiss anyone but his true love, or else he dies. Eric lost his mother when he was young, and recently learned that she kept secrets and dedicated her life to finding the person who cursed Eric. He takes on the hunt himself. While trying to find answers he falls overboard and is saved by a mysterious singing lady. Another lady washes up on the beach shortly after. Despite all of that he is determined to find the witch that cursed him.
Even though the story of The Little Mermaid is familiar, this story is fresh and new. I loved the writing of the characters in this story. Even though you know Eric, you get to know him a little more. There are new characters introduced that are the perfect addition to the story. I loved seeing a different side of Eric and seeing his side of a beloved story.
This story kept the same feeling as the original story while adding twists to it. It was also fun to learn more about Ursula and how she played into Eric’s story. The world-building was done well and the story flew by. The chapter titles were a fun addition to the story, they were song titles from the movie and the Broadway play.
There were a few parts in the story that felt rushed or something is done too quickly. I would have liked more descriptions and actions in those parts.
I would give this book 4 stars, and is perfect for middle-grade or younger YA readers. It is a fun retelling and great for any Disney fans!
Thank you NetGalley and Disney for allowing me to copy this arc.

Prince Eric is cursed. He can only kiss his true love or he will die. This all comes from a witch who cursed his mother before he was born. Now his mother has been dead for two years, lost at sea trying to find a way to end the curse. Now with deadly seas, a kingdom coming for the end of his, and the rumors of ghost pirates keep him busy with many duties. When Eric finds a letter from his mother detailing his curse, he goes in search of the witch who cursed him. The ship he's sailing on crashes and he's saved by a girl with a mysterious voice, he feels drawn to finding her. Now Eric must venture past his home to save his people, himself, and a girl who washed up on the beach with bright red hair and a mystery of her own.
Retellings of fairy tales generally aren't my favorite. It's hard to capture the essence of it. At least in my opinion, it takes a lot of faith for me to read one. This was such a pleasant surprise! I loved having the story told from Eric's point of view and to have friends help him along the way. It gave the well known story a new life. The additions of pirates, mysterious ghosts, and intrigue of different kingdoms kept it feeling fresh and new. Eric is also a great character to read. His love for his mother and the lengths that he would go to find her was what warmed me to him. I also enjoyed reading his concern over how to find his "true love" and be himself at the same time.
This was a great retelling that stuck pretty close to the original story, but also had a way of being something new at the same time. I would definitely recommend this to people who enjoy The Little Mermaid, fairy tale retellings, and pirate adventures.

Set within the narrative expected from Disney's animated The Little Mermaid, PRINCE OF SONG & SEA gives a backstory to Prince Eric - which is greatly appreciated. There are nods to the Disney movie throughout even though Miller expands upon the original plot line (Eric's curse drives his early interactions with Ariel and does a better job of explaining how and why their first 24-hours play out the way they do).
I really liked Eric's history and thought his curse was interesting and added more depth to the entire storyline. As an adult reader, the plot point of consent being important seemed very heavy handed, but might be not as obvious to teen readers (and it IS a solid message to include within this storyline especially given what Ursula does to gain her power and how Eric could break his curse).
Overall I enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing what comes next in the Princes series.

Thank you, Disney, for allowing this book to be written and for making this the series that Disney fans never knew they wanted or were waiting for. At first, I was not quite sure how Prince Eric’s curse was going to play into the story, then the more I thought about it the more and more it made sense with the direction the book was trying to lead you on. Love the idea that Ursula was playing the game from both Ariel and Eric’s perspective. I 100% could see this being the real back story. I also enjoyed the little references to the movie that were sprinkled in. Having movie dialog in the book tied in so beautifully to the story we all know and love. I also enjoyed seeing Eric and Ariel’s relationship explored a little bit deeper than the movie. Her attempting to support Eric after finding out about her curse was just so touching. I truly loved this book and can’t wait to see where this series takes us next.
Thank you Disney Publishing and Netgalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this title.

A new take on classic a Disney Fairytale but told from the viewpoint of the prince. I love the Little Mermaid and was happy that this book stayed true to that story but added so much more of Eric’s story. In this book Prince Eric is cursed and will die unless he kisses his one true love. He sets off to break the curse and marry before he becomes Kind. A really good story, with a lot of fantasy that keeps your on your toes.
