little bit weird, little bit wonderful. i cant put into words what I just read but it was a fun ride!
A very well written novel that I had a hard time putting down. I cant wait to read the next novel by this author.
2 stars. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Dusks and Dawns flip flops between Hell and a town under Hell's thumb, New Hope. The possibility of a purge keeps the appearance of New Hope pious, but the people living there are anything but. Meanwhile, devils and demons fill their time tormenting lost souls and taking spouses to continue their line.
New characters are reasonable for a book, however introducing new characters every chapter as well as telling the story(or lack thereof) though their eyes makes for a mess of a plot. Pages upon pages of characters are found at the end of this book, in hopes of helping the reader keep them straight, however the author was so focused on new characters that the plot completely falls out. This could have easily been a novella rather than a full story, and I hesitate to even call it a full story. Nothing really happens that furthers a plot, just body horror and sexual deviance. Neither of these aspects bother me as long as the plot supports it.
I cannot recommend this novel as there isn't enough story in it to recommend. Dusks and Dawns wasn't for me, which was a real bummer as I looked forward to this possible spooky read.
It had an interesting premise, but I struggled with the writing style. It describes intense feelings, but then immediately changes to a distant / impersonal / almost mechanical sentence pattern. (ie. "In a fit of rage, he smashed the log..." and then the next paragraph has "This cause Jacob to scream internally.") It's jarringly dichotomous to me -- it feels like reading from 3rd person limited POV in one line and immediately following it with 3rd person omniscient, if that makes any sense.
This was actually a pretty good story of witchcraft and the occult. I had never heard of this author before, so I'm assuming it's a debut novel, and if so...it's a really good one. Hope to hear more in the future.
