Wow! Wow! Wow! It is 2 am, and I just had to finish Doomed Legacy. This book hooked me from the very beginning and kept me eagerly turning pages to find out what would happen next. When I couldn't read it, I was thinking and talking about it. Doomed Legacy would make a great movie. It'll also make a great Christmas gift for several people in my life!
Rick Cahill is trying to lead as quiet a life as he can. He spends most of his days doing background checks by the way of his computer. His life with his wife and child are what makes him want to go on. But Rick is having more and more trouble containing the rage inside him that comes from the CTE (the disease of NFL players with multiple concussions) he and the Doctors are sure he suffers.
When he explodes at Leah and scares their daughter Kristi, Leah takes off to her parents home in Santa Barbara. Rick is devastated that this uncontrollable rage is what is tearing their lives apart.
Rick gets involved with a problem with one of his clients who are working with a new firm doing the background checks he usually does. There just something odd about this new company.
For me reading this novel and watching how it proceeds seems just a way for Rick to get involved in an artificial situation that allows him to lose his temper at other people who turn out to bad guys and then get him involved with murder and mayhem. The whole novel is like a bad "Dirty Harry" movie, with violence being the mainstay of the book.
This is the Ninth in the Rick Cahill .Series. I have read several in the series and enjoy this series blend of action, mystery and thriller. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley. My review opinion is my own, .
In this next in series our protagnist is dealing with a disease caused by head trauma. As his disease progresses his symptoms are worse and soon others around him and his family are in danger. Unable to face his disease progression he takes on a case against the wishes of his family. A San Diego serial killer may be on the loose and Rick is determined to stop him when someone he was hired to help is murdered.
A lot of action here in solving the case and heartfelt sadness whil.e he deals with his disease. The ending was exciting and the charcters are realistic and all add to the story. Another winning action thriller for the author.
Rick Cahill, a complex character who is struggling with the progression of his neurological disease CTE, returns in a convoluted story of conspiracy and death. His fits of white-hot rage are on the rise, straining, and possibly fracturing, his marriage. To help mend the rift, Rick has given up “field work” as a PI and has taken on less dangerous work doing background checks for other firms. Not Rick’s ideal job, he finds the “computer work” tiresome and boring. Yet he marches on for the sake of his health and his family. Then, professional contact, Sara Bhandari, asks him to check out unusual activities involving background checks done by another investigative agency for a military-connected high-tech company. Rick believes the case is small and unimportant but will at least offer him the fieldwork he craves. Then Sara turns up dead and Rick discovers her body. The police think she is simply the next victim of a serial rapist plaguing the San Diego area who has now excavator to include murder in his activities. Rick disagrees. What follows is a classic Rick Cahill tale in which he, his family, and his colleagues become embroiled in an international conspiracy that leads Rick to a face-to-face confrontation with a vicious killer. Yes, Rick Cahill returns in a well plotted and written story that will drag you to the explosive climax.

In DOOMED LEGACY, by Matt Coyle, Rick Cahill is a seasoned private investigator who has lived a full life. Now with a family and degenerative condition, called CTE, starting to affect his daily life, Rick should be easing into a simpler life than he has ever led before. But when Rick finds a work contact/friend dead, he can't help but try to find out what happened to her and why. Will Rick's determination to find the truth ruin his relationship with his family and destroy his career, or can he solve the mystery and save his family life as well?
Coyle has created a character in Rick Cahill that readers are drawn to, a broken man who has made mistakes but keeps picking himself up and trying be a better person. Rick is instinctual, passionate, and tenacious, which are great characteristics to have when one is private investigator. The supported cast is equally interesting and Coyle does a good job of introducing the reader to the key players. While Coyle does a good job of filling in the knowledge gaps for those who have not read the previous Rick Cahill novels, it felt at times that the plot halted to catch the reader up and therefore felt clunky. As the book comes to it's exciting conclusion, Coyle does throw in some unexpected twists that hook the reader until the very end.
An exciting and heartfelt mystery/thriller, DOOMED LEGACY was a really fun read. Now want to go back and read the earlier Rick Cahill novels to get to know him better.
I felt like I’d missed something when I stepped into the ninth book in the series even though the author provided some background. Series readers probably wouldn’t want any more. Good, gritty PI story with characters you’d expect and be disappointed if they weren’t there. Predictable yet enjoyable.
Rick Cahill, a damaged private detective, is approached by a an acquaintance who notices irregularities to procedures at the company where she works. Cahill is offhand with her concerns..Not long afterwards he finds her dead, seemingly the victim of a. sadistic murder. This is not something Cahill can easily let go. Especially after it seems that someone is really out to discredit his character.
At the same time marital difficulties ste beginning to loom. Cahill suspects that he may be punch drunk and knows that the end game will involve dementia, and before that a propensity for dangerous rages. Still, he cannot let go and allow the police to do the job of finding the murderer.
With professional sidekick Moira, he unearths a murky world of shell companies that mask a chain of corruption at an international scale.
Cahill is introspective enough to ask himself why he continues to pursue cases like these that put those closest to him in great danger: what price truth?. It seems that cops and detectives are no different from criminals and mobsters in that cumulative exposure to death and violence can and do impact all other areas of one's life - it takes a long spoon to sup with the devil.
The characters are developed well then, though Cahill takes it on the chin fir being stereotypically 'male' in not communicating over personal matters. The suspense is built up well, and has one final twist at the end, in case it all seemed to be over. Thexending didn't disappoint, which was definity a plus, and I would be happy to encounter Cahill again, in earlier stiries, by the way, work just as well as standalones - another major us in its favour.
Recommended to all those who like a little noir to their crime thrillers.
9th in the series. Fast read with good character development. A modern take on the old noir detective genre. If you like gritty novels with a modern twist, you'll like this one.
Rick Cahill is such a dweeb. With a stutter. Not a stutter with his tongue, a stutter with his thought, or at least how Matt Coyle writes it
Rick Cahill has convinced himself that faithfulness to his family is the same as love. He's no more effective as a human than is his mutt Midnight. He is pathetic.
And the stutter. Rick's interior personal dialogue is composed of declarative sentences that end in a period. Followed by a sentence fragment also ending in a period. Like this.
Paragraph after paragraph end with this structure and it drove me nuts. No more Rick Cahill for me.
NB: The book's title is dismal. A legacy can't be doomed because it isn't a thing, Dooming would be accurate but beyond awful.
Didn't realize this is part of a series, book 9. It was fast paced and action packed. Loved the characters and will definitely read this series, staring with the first book. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
Thank you Netgalley and Oceanview Publishing for the digital Arc of this Book
This was my first book by Matt Coyle and my first book in Rick Cahill's series world
Doomed Legacy is the ninth book in the series. The story centers around the murder of one of Rick's clients and his attempts to uncover the truth about her murder, the story also explores Rick's relationship with his family and his health issues and some backstory hints about his past.
This was a fast paced crime thriller reads well as a stand-alone book with some interesting characters ( My favorites are Moira and Midnight).
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an e ARC of this book.
A PI on a dangerous mission. Reads as a standalone but the backstory hints lead to curiosity since the story is not fleshed out. Still a plot that keeps you reading.
Another fabulous book by this talented Author. I’m a big fan of Matt Coyle’s novels, and his Rick Cahill series. They always tense and entertaining, with plenty happening. Doomed Legacy is right up there as one of my favourites. Rick’s life is complicated, and it’s not about to get any easier. Thrilling all the way through, loved it.
Rick Cahill’s life as a Private Investigator is a little bit more sedate these days since he has a wife and child. Rick promised that he would mainly keep his investigations down to work he could complete from his home office. However, when Sara Bhandari his contact from Fulcrum Security, gets in contract with him to investigate something she’s worried about, his whole world is about to change. Just what his wife didn’t want, for Rick to put himself in harms way again. It’s just what Rick happens to be good at.
From the first page right through to the last page, this is an excellent story. 5/5 Star Rating.
This book was too short but managed to cram a lot of action into the space allowed! I’m glad there are other books featuring this charismatic private eye as this one made me want to get to know him better. The other characters are also well developed. Sara’s fate is tragic but certainly triggers a lot of action.
Not having read any of the previous books in the series I delved into this book based on the reviews and description. I was not disappointed. I read it very quickly, unable to put it down. A fast paced page turner that I’d absolutely recommend ! The book kept me engaged right up to the last sentence !
Doomed Legacy is an enjoyable, quick read crime thriller that takes in beloved San Diego.
I enjoyed reading it and I'm sure my Buzzfeed roundup readers will as well.
Thank you Oceanview and NetGalley for the digital review copy.
Doomed Legacy, the ninth book in Coyle's Rick Cahill private investigator series, reads well as a stand-alone book with just enough back story splashed in to orient the reader. Cahill is not on the best of terms with the local law enforcement stemming from days when he was the primary suspect for his wife’s murder. His life seems to be turning around: He’s reconciling with his good friend, Turk, after a major disagreement; Cahill’s girlfriend, Leah, who saw him through being shot in the face in Santa Barbara, is now his wife and they have a toddler daughter; in addition, a fellow PI, Moira, has worked with Cahill on a few cases pitches in with this case. He's now seeing a neurologist regarding some changes in the way his brain is functioning and learns he has CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) from multiple concussions during his years of playing sports and being beaten up as a private investigate and cop.
Cahill is a great wounded hero, and Coyle does a superb job of capturing Cahill’s efforts to deal with his new diagnosis. Cahill—a moody PI, tough, hard-boiled, and unapologetic—has been side-tracked by his wife and is doing only background checks for employers, which he finds unappealing and dull. Doomed Legacy centers around the murder of a woman who talks to Rick about possible abnormalities in the handling of the company’s background checks—critical because that company also works with the Defense Department. The reader is immediately taken on a whirlwind tour of the West Coast as Cahill moved from San Diego to Santa Barbara to Monterrey while tracking down multiple plot lines: a serial rapist, the DOD employee background checks, police coverups, and Chinese spies.
So far I've read half this series and will definitely continue working through the remainder.

Private investigator Rick Cahill is back in on his most dangerous mission yet.
Matt Coyle keeps the series alive with new murders and new struggles for PI Rick Cahill.
The character of Rick has been developed in previous books. This does not stop a fresh read from starting with this book as a standalone. Through the book, Rick’s character is further developed, with realistic emotional pain and upheaval.
As Rick struggles to balance a disengaged family, his own failing mental health, and the tracking down of a relentless killer, he must make decisions about his own future, and possibly the value of his life.
Doomed Legacy is a fast-hitting mystery, that engages the reader to the very last pages.

I really enjoyed this. Rick Cahill has a diseases which causes him to have uncontrollable anger. He knows this is a risk to his and he stuggles as to how he explains this. But there is more, he is ex-police, accused of killing his and able to prove that he didn't.
Now a private investigator he carries out some work for a business contact. When she fails to return calls and messages he goes to her house to discover she is dead. Police believe she is a victim of a serial rapist who has progressed to murder.
However, as Rick seems to be blacklisted from all companies this is a fight to discover the truth behind the murder and why his business is coming under attack.
The path to the truth is far from easy, and what he discovers is not as the police think.
I would really recommend this book.
This is one of a series of books featuring ex-cop turned P I Rick, his wife Leah and daughter Krista. Despite this being part of a series and referring back to previous events, it can easily be read as a stand alone novel which I did. Rick has received a devastating diagnosis of a potentially life changing medical condition but does his best to hide this from his wife. This lack of honesty, his inability to control his temper because of the condition and his involvement in a complex murder case all combine to threaten his family, relationships and very existence. A great book which has made me want to read others in the series.
